Deer fights/rutting behaviour primarily occur during the mating season, which typically falls in the fall or winter months. During this time, male deer, also known as bucks, will engage in fights to establish dominance over other males and gain access to females for mating.
Bucks will use their antlers to engage in combat with other males, often in intense and aggressive battles that can result in injuries or even death. The fights can also involve displays of strength, such as parallel walks, pushing, and shoving.
The purpose of the fight is to establish a hierarchy or pecking order among the males in the herd. The dominant male, often referred to as the "alpha buck," will have the best chance of mating with the females, ensuring the survival of his genes.
Deer fights are a natural behaviour that is important for the survival of the species, as it helps to ensure that the strongest and most capable males are able to reproduce and pass on their genes to the next generation.
