when i heard the news this morning of my hero's death i played a loud Sanborn set at 6:00 and my wife understood. my son is a great bassist largely on this marcus groove. Dave was one of music's original giants. i remember coming up on alto in the early 80s and EVERYBODY on alto wanted to sound like Dave, even to the point of doing his unique head tilt, all in vain. I and everybody else had to accept that there's only one Dave Sanborn. gutted but grateful

He was the reason I picked up a horn, I saw him in Manchester in the mid/late 90s outstanding set, and I was literally 6ft in front of him the whole gig! I shook his hand at the end, his hand was really pliable, almost like it had no bones! I arrived early and drove to the back of the building looking for parking and came across Marcus Miller smoking, what looked like a joint!
