Great recording of this rare gem of a waltz by Eduard Strauss.

Very rare recording of a great waltz by Edi, waltz 1A and one starting at 4:36 are especially spectacular.

Thank you for your comment, I also particularly like the parts at 2:45, 4:04 and the waltz 4A at 5:13, which is then beautifully repeated as the transition to coda. This is a true Eduard's masterpiece in his best style.

A really nice discovery this from Edi. I am always on the lookout for rarities. I am currently learning the fantastic Cycloiden Waltze by Johann Strauss opus 207 on the piano and have suggested to the Vienna Phil to consider peforming it for the 2025 New Year Concert.

"Cycloiden" is a forgotten, musically very interesting waltz that is certainly worth performing today. It's great that you play this work!

Cycloiden is surely one of his best works composed before Morgenblätter, there is a nice piano recording of it: kzitem.info/news/bejne/xq-VmZ9opamVdI4

Just heard it. Thanks for this. Yes this waltze is amazing. Interesting to note a lot of Strauss waltzes are in the key of E. Flat Major.@@Adamov1

If they wanted to they would have done it already. The Vienna City Archives have all this music ( many) with full orchestrations!

Porque as valsas dw Eduard Strauss não são executadas nos concertos anuais de ano Novo de Viena?

I also wonder why Wiener Philharmoniker do not play his waltzes during New Year's Concerts. In 1985, Lorin Maazel conducted the excellent waltz "Fesche Geister" op. 75 and this was the last performance of Eduard's waltz. A lot of his masterpieces are still waiting to be played.

@@antares7880I have discussed the fact with many musicians and arrangers, and their verdict is that Eduard was extremely gifted in his orchestrations - so many details and refinements never made it into the piano reductions. When assessing an item for which no recordings exist, and where the orchestra sheet music in many cases is challenging to obtain, the first vetting is often done from the piano-score - and that will then often result in rejection, as 'uninspired'. There are some piano-recordings on YT where the pianist has made serious efforts to 'fill in' some of the missing music from rare preserved sheet music for orchestra, but my very personal feeling is that doing so really needs a version for 4-hand piano or piano duet - the music gets too complicated to play at normal tempi.

@@PerCPH2200 Thank you for your comment, I generally agree that piano scores as such may indeed seem poor in comparison with original full scores. I have also a similar impression that Eduard's style of orchestration was largely unique and different in details from Johann's or Josef's mastery. He was able to use beautiful countermelodies and changes in major/minor keys in a single waltz section, as well as creating attractive contrasts between the sections. French-polkas or mazurkas composed by Eduard are also very graceful and noble, so limiting the perception of his work to popular fast polkas cannot give a full, representative picture of his talent. I think that Eduard was musically really well educated by good professional teachers, and maybe even better than his brothers in the sense of long, systematic study.
