Hello Professor Hobo! I'm a huge, huge fan. I was wondering if you had any thoughts on a true all-in-one unit for small 100% off grid applications. I'm curious specifically about something that could handle daily use aboard a ~30ft sailboat. With wattage for induction cooking (or not, mine is propane), and enough juice and solar input handling for 2-4 people to rely on it for charging devices and powering LED lights, LED projector, fans, a 12v fridge, etc. It can't be massive and heavy, as space is limited in a small boat. Water resistance/durability would be a little important for a month+ at sea. What do you think?

Don't know if Hobo or anyone will see this, but Runhood listened to HoboTech's review. I just received my unit & it's a quality product. They put an arrow & hand grip on the energy bar so you know which end is up. There are rubber stopper plugs in the power bar openings to keep them clean if one or both batteries (power bars) are removed. The solar panel cords now have MC4 connectors. They no longer include the USB C cord & wall plug. But they did provide an excellant well made, expandable, water resistant pouch with carry strap for all the cables & manual. Everything was very well packaged.

This looks like a really cool power station! Having extra batteries you could carry around sounds like a neat idea. I love the included accessories and the fact that it has 100W USB C PD unlike some other popular power stations. It would be nice to be able to chain extra batteries in for charging in some way, or have an add on you could plug batteries in the charge them, like how DJI has multislot battery chargers for their drones. I'd imagine the reason there isn't an adapter to charge the batteries directly via solar is that the station itself uses MPPT and it would be more expensive and difficult to fit the same charger into the smaller space.
@00SNIVY00
2 жыл бұрын
Another thing that I'm thinking about now, this could be pretty handy for camping, since you get the adapter for the separate batteries, you could run the main power station with a portable cooler and when the batteries get low, you could swap batteries out and charge them via USB C. I'll definitely keep an eye on this. I'm hesitant because it's a new company and an indiegogo run, been burned on some others, but I've also had some luck with ZMI and Zendure.

Great review! Swappable batteries are a great idea & would totally purchase the unit "if" they 1)Tweaked the efficiency, 2)Added solar charge ports (or offered solar charge cable adaptors) for the batteries and 3)Added BT support to the BMS/s! That said, would love to see them offer a larger unit (well over 600W) that features swappable LiFe04 batteries(!)
@David-rx2to

My issue with these small units is that 600Ws limits the usefulness to recharging other batteries, or powering a 12V refrigerator. No toaster, no coffee pot, no induction cooktop, no nothing that requires over 600Ws to work. Love the idea of the swap-able battery packs, and how they average the power available, but make a big brother of this unit that can support 1500W.

Totally agree. I would love to see a 750 to 1200wh unit with a 2000w inverter that is expandable. No need to have the weight of a bigger unit for most weekend situations but would love to then have power when needed. For instance a 1200wh unit with the guts, expandability and inverter of an AC200Max would be awesome.

I was asking myself if it was hot swappable during the entire video, glad you finally addressed that. Would be cool if you could assign order of depletion so you could have battery A used first, then when it starts using battery B you get a notification and can hit swap. Would also be cool if it was Bluetooth or WiFi enabled so you could get a notification when a battery is depleted. Cool product. Not a huge fan of the low 70% efficiency. On charging the battery directly via solar, wouldn’t you need some kind of charge controller in the little snap on unit?

A simpler workaround with the included solar panels would be to include a USB-C connector to their included solar panels. Then you could charge the unit or the individual batteries separately.
@johnmathias4871

Wow, that is really packed with cool features. I think another thing to ask for from them might be to offer for sale those snap-on USB output/input things individually. My thought is if they dont have the capability to quickly add the solar input connector like you asked, then an owner could take advantage of the pass-through capability of the unit to charge up to 4 batteries at a time (2 plugged into the unit and 2 from the PD USB C plugs feeding 2 batteries with the external USB snap-ons.) Would that work or am I missing something? Even if they don't offer them separately, I guess you could theortically use the same process to charge 3 at a time with what is already included? Thanks again for another informative and entertaining video!

What an amazing concept. Just when I think, what else could a manufacturer add to create the next best SoGen?! I do feel it's a short fall not to make the solar panel more standard/ universal with current industry standards. I own a Bluetti, Jackery's, Techoss, and built a 3000Ah LiFePO4 system. The last thing I want is a coffee weight solar panel that can't plug into my other systems. Tom, onto a separate question to you, have you ever considered coming up with your own Scoring / Rating system for SoGens? The idea comes from watching I watch YT TFL Trucks. Before you know it, each manfucture will have a Hobotech approved stick on each product. 🙂 Keep up all the great, honest KZitem content. Mark (& Teresa)

@@HOBOTECH - Here in the US the nominal single face voltage is 120v (RMS) but other countries use 110v, 115v, or 117v so using 110v will work ok in most countries. But when running a load designed to work at 120vac on 110vac that will sacrifice almost 10% on performance. You see it, especially on power tools.

I love the modular design of the batteries, specifically the ability for them to function as rather large power bricks. In a camping scenario, I could see that unit being very popular. However, the inverter is not really up to par and they made a really odd choice for the barrel plug size on the charger. If this ever becomes a commercially-available product, I would expect those two things to be corrected. This overall design concept could also scale, with a unit that is roughly twice the size, with a corresponding increase in both inverter power and battery storage capacity. It's too bad so many products like this are crowd-funded and sometimes take forever to deliver on what they promise.

Extra batteries about 220. but an extra battery with the 2 modules is about the same after a 70 dollar coupon. If I were buying it I would get 2 of those so I would have the ability to use the pd100 to charge 3 batteries externally at the same time. This product really blurs the line between direct battery access and the main unit as a whole. So yes, they could allow solar into the battery, and a larger inverter, and a SOS light, and then boom, it's basically that orange box all over again. So in my opinion, if you need to haul the batteries between the charging location and consumption location, just get two whole units and run batteries between them.
