I am a total beginner and just started running long distance at age 46. I ran a solo marathon on Saturday. I am working up to a 50k ultra. I am in love with ultra running and am so inspired with people like Jim Walmsley, Courtney Dauwalter and Zach Miller. Six months ago I was overweight and not exercising. I've turned it all around. I went from 215 pounds down to 170 and now I'm in the best shape of my life. I still have work to do on my running but I am so happy now. When I completed the solo marathon I broke down in tears because it has been a major goal of mine for the last 6 months.

I run tons of ultras, and 99% of them are by myself. It was great to see you doing an ultra by yourself, as I was able to glean some wisdom out of this video for all my future runs. This is probably just me, but I start to get nervous and my stomach becomes uneasy the longer an ultra goes. I usually consume a little under twice the calories you did just in order to keep calm (and I know I weigh less than you). I especially like how you weren't afraid to take breaks. Also, talking to a camera kind of seemed uplifting, almost like there's someone to talk to periodically. I think I'll give that a shot. Thank you for the video! And for putting yourself through that for all of us to watch!

And yes, talking to the camera is a great way to stay motivated, good luck trying it!

Nice work Tom!! Yeah sometimes there's pain that lasts a few days. I just did a 100 miler this past weekend and the bottom of my feet still hurt a bit when I stand up, but it only lasts a few days. For the heat stroke, get some water, wear clothes that you can get wet to cool you down. Maybe have a water stop every couple miles if you're going solo. Good luck!

Yeah when I’m going shorter distances or racing in Z3, I do creep closer to 300 per hour. But for 50 and 100 milers I’m nearly all in Z1-2, so I usually do 100-150 per hour. Or more if the aid stations are good 😜. Might be worth trying more though, thanks!

It really depends on how you train your body and the difficulty of the terrain. I run fasted and have done so for years. I usually won't take in any food for at least 20 miles. I have run close to sixty (60), 50 milers and on the flat race (like the one Ryan is running, and especially on a road 50) I don't require many calories at all. In my old age, I have given up on doing the trail races for the most part which require way more calories for me ~ I really love running roads! Just did a solo 60 miler Sept 4th, 2020 which consisted of 5 x 12 mile loops. I did stop every loop to drink liquid (water and Tailwind mix) and sit down. I drank about 15 oz of mix each loop and 20 oz of water in the middle of the loop (where I stashed water). I ate just a little bit of cheese, some salami, and one GU. Average mile pace overall 11; average moving pace 10:15 per mile. 2 weeks later (Sep 18th), I did 50K and used only a GU with one stop at 12 miles, then at 18 and 24 to get water from a stream (time 4:54 @ 9:30 per mile).

Good on you dude! I know what it's like to run and ultra by yourself. It can be hard. For most of my ultras I run by myself - because I'm usually last ;-) I've also done 4 ultras in 4 weeks in July by myself. The last one was pretty tough. (taking the wrong turn in the dark didn't help) I think since it wasn't a race, and you weren't pushing hard, just out running long for the hell of it, your body wasn't hammered like it would be in a race. So maybe that's why your recovery is going so well. For my last ultra race I was super chilled and really just relaxed into it, and the next day I was fine, as if I'd just been out for a 20 or 30 km run. So I think that's the key - just take it easy and enjoy the day. Looking forward to your next vid ;-)

Would suggest working on your turn over and form and you’ll get faster 👍🏻. Although pace only matters on race day really
@RyanClaytonFilms
3 жыл бұрын
Great question!! There are a lot of things that you can do to get faster, don't need to be tall or lengthen your stride. Most of it comes down to running economy, so being very efficient with your running stride. And that comes from doing speed drills, high intensity efforts, intervals, things like that. Start small and just do some strides at the end of one or two runs a week. Then work in some 3 min intervals where you are running hard and then recovering a few times a week. Once you are comfortable with that, work in some days where you go for a fast mile, but always make sure that you are spacing these higher intensity days out in order to recover and prevent injury. The more you can get in that "fast" speed, the better your running efficiency will be and it will translate to all aspects of your running, even over the course of 50 or 100 mile races. Hope that helps!!

Lumberjack in Port Gamble Wa. they have 50 mile, 100k and 100 miler. 12.5 mile loops in the woods. very technical too me. used to be held second week in april now it's held in june. i think lumberjack was two weekends ago. 30 hour limit. pretty generous but there are some mud bogs that will eat your shoe/shoes if you're not careful. I've never completed the 50 miler. the loop is 12.5 miles . lots of vertical. i can handle the uphills, but the downhills killed my IT bands. It's my goal to eventually finish the 50 miler just once. I saw on FB that even experienced ultra runners had a hard time this last time. made me feel not so bad for never completing. great aid stations. I think you'd like it. very challenging.

My first 50km and following two 50km's I've done have always been on my own. I enjoy it though, I've never really ran with groups or in clubs and have only done three races before. If you are going to, I'd suggest trying to split the run in to two loops for your first time. That's what I did. I took my running pack out with water and some snacks. Did the first loop, took a "pit stop" at home. Drank some water, ate some more food, then refilled my pack and water bottles and did the second loop 😁 Now I just take my pack, food and do it in one go. But I always take my bank card and ID with me, if I need to refill I can stop by a shop and buy more things. Motivation can be the hardest thing alone though. I take headphones with me and usually put them in for the last 6-8 miles to try keep me going. Good luck!

Well done Ryan! It truly is hard to do a run like that when you are all alone. No encouragement, self doubts, the “why am I doing this?”, the boredom.... I confess.... I was going to do a solo, 25-30 mile run on a hot day this summer. I got 16 miles into it and quit. I quit. I could not stop the internal debate on “why are you doing this”. It is also tough when friends and family ask “ why are you doing this”. It is hard to have the mental toughness to do something that hard if you don’t have to do it. Full respect and admiration.

Dude, I totally get what you're saying. 100%. The self doubts, they why am I doing this question over and over, zero external motivation. You're not alone! Good luck slaying those doubts next time you hear them!!

Awesome video! Great job on completing a solo 50 mile! I am new to Ultra running and for most of my life I have had a strong dislike with running.... But on October 10th, 2020 I will be participating in my first 50 mile race in Kansas. I appreciate how you videoed the parts of your run were you were struggling, walking, sitting, etc. I am aiming to do a similar game plan as yours with nutrition, walking, etc but with a lot more walking than you! Thanks again for sharing!

Thanks Joey! I actually don't think Altra sells them, these were sent to the Red Team. Maybe you can find some on ebay, but that's a long shot! Altra used to have a good clothing selection but this year it's pretty much all disappeared off their site and they've focused mostly on shoes.

How do you calculate your running calories? My COROS watch tells me 1600 calories for 195lb male at 135 avg hr for 2 hours 12 minute 13.1 miler. Is my watch jacked?
@RyanClaytonFilms
4 жыл бұрын
I don't know how Coros calculates calories, much of how their watches work is not known, since they don't produce research papers or any documentation really so I don't know if I'd trust that 1600 calories. You don't need to replace all the calories you expend, your body will burn fuel that's stored for a lot of it's energy. Most people are between 100-400 calories per hour needing to replace and it just takes experimentation to find what works for you. Good luck!

Grats on the 50 miler! I'm so jealous as it looked like the parking lot was empty and you had the trails to yourself for the day. I live in California and all the trails are packed with ultrarunners everyday (I frequently spot Dean Karnazes on the trails). I usually get in 35-50 miles a week on the trails. I've done a bunch of ultras but l haven't done one this year. I love your 10 mile loops back to the car to re-fuel and might have to do a solo ultra before the end of the year. Thanks for the great video.
@RyanClaytonFilms
4 жыл бұрын
Whoa that's pretty cool you see Dean out there! Yeah the place I went is a state park so you either have a pass or pay per day to get it. That cuts down on some of the crowding on the trails and I went on a Friday so that helped too. Good luck getting your solo ultra done this year!!

Using the rule of thumb of dist(km)*weight(kg) = calories puts you at a rough 80*60 = 4800 calories. Feels like a massive calorie deficit to be on even with running near or below VT1 and body stores, fat burn, etc. Is this just the ratio you found works for you?
@RyanClaytonFilms
4 жыл бұрын
Interesting, I don't know if I've ever used that formula. It really varies a lot with intensity levels, and so yeah at this low of an intensity, I find I don't need a whole lot for efforts up to 50 miles. Now going farther than that my strategy is much different for sure.
