Thanks for the info on the PWM. I simply used a small arduino to generate a PWM into a mosfet that was switching the 5v to ground.

I did that as well and it works, but MB uses a 12V signal so I decided to go with that. I also found that a 3.3V version of the Ardruino will not work without switching an external 5V to 12V power.

great info .. ii been scratching my head on a Benz fan i installed in a old datsun (my small wires are blue /blck and green/orange from a w203 at a wreckers yard) .. i know on my actual benz w209 the ecu does the pulsing i figured i would need to sort out what small wire did what and get a pwm frequency generator , and you gave me in the insight on how each duty cycles it functions.. thanks for the video

This video was a ton of help. Thanks for making it. Do you happen to know how much current these things draw at 90%?
@jroncallo
2 жыл бұрын
It should be about 45 amps, however I measured 38 amps at both 90% and 100%. But I suspect the current may go up when the car is in forward motion and the fan gets unloaded due to air speed.

Greeting to a friend. I have a fan like this 600w on my mercedes w211 om648. For me, the fan only turns on at 97c, until then it stops. That seems like a high temperature to me. It only happens in heavy traffic. When I drive on the open road, the temperature is 90c.

Seems a little high but not too much it its maintaining 97C. I suspect there is a gauge or sensor error.

Thank you. I was actually trying to control a new model with the circuit inside the fan motor. I see that you are using 5v for the pwm, that might be my problem. Was trying with 12v.

I have heard anywhere from 3.5 to 12V. It work at 12V as well as it does at 5. 3.8 was about the lowest I could go. When you say new model be careful I heard the Bosch motors run at 100Hz to 300 Hz.

Thanks for this helpful video. I'm running a A1645000493 from Brose with 600W normally used on the ML and R class Mercedes in my 68 Cuda. I've connected it to my Holley HP output which is a 12V PWM plus signal to the yellow wire of the fan and the C15 12V to the green wire of the fan. Also coming from the output of the HP. I've tried different frequencies starting from 10hz to 200hz but the fan after startup is going into full speed despite of the value of the duty cycle. Do I need a PWM negativ signal or what I'm doing wrong here? Or will this kind of fan not working without a controller from Mercedes? Thanks for your support.
@jroncallo

You actually need a PMW signal that pulls the 12V power from the fan down to zero.

Hi. Thanks for the great vid. I have a 2016 Merc Vito, Viano fan that I bought. I want to make it work but it does not seem do do anything. It has a thick Red wire (Obvioisly Positive), a thick cream coloured wire, a thin black wire and a thin purple wire. Do you perhaps know hpw I can make it work. Should the fan start spinning if I connect up the Positive and ground (Thick wires) and then earth the black wire?
@jroncallo
10 ай бұрын
The fan will not work with just the large Red and Cream wires connected to a battery. You will need to find out which of the other two wires, gets powered with the key on. Connecting that one to battery + will run the fan at full speed. My best guess is that would be the black wire. The other wire will be the PWM signal and needs to be connected to a PWM signal to run the fan at lower speeds.

I have a 2012 Merc GL350 and my suction fan does strange things. I verified 12v power to fan, 12v ignition power to fan, negative to fan, it is the control wire that is doing strange things. If I turn on the car no fan ever. If I try to activate it using Auto nothing. However, if I unplug the fan w engine running, and replug fan it starts to spin slowly. With the Autel I can activate the fan and it will run max until I tell it to stop. Would you please lend me some knowledge/advise? What is wrong w fan? This is a replacement aftermarket fan. I replaced the original thinking this would solve issue.
@jroncallo
Жыл бұрын
Not sure if your 2012 GL350 fan works the same. But if it does the fan should run full speed with the PWM signal disconnected and the key on. If that works then you will need to test the PWM signal using a scope. These fans are known to go bad.

Whats the overall dimensions of the shroud itself without the mounting "wings"? I'm curious about this fan, is it a Spal or Bosch and is it a brushless or brush motor? Could it be controlled with a PWM? Any idea of CFM? I'm looking for alternative fans for my 69 Camaro BBC which has a 23" X 17" radiator core, and I'm just running a big Holley double pumper, so no ECU.
@jroncallo

The fan diameter is 19". It is made by either Temmic or Bosch. Don't know if its brushless. It is only controlled with PWM or you can just run it at 100% speed with a 12V DC signal. No idea of the CFM but it is ~ 50amp. compared to my previos 3000CFM 16" Flexalite I would have to say its a lot. I'm using it on my 22 x 16" Benz core with no issues.

Absolutely. The shrouds cut very easy on a table saw and then you can pop rivet an aluminum shroud to the plastic MB one.

With a 19" x 24" Core you may be able to fit an 850W fan from an ML500. They are controlled the same way as the 600W fan I'm using in my 107. The fan I am using is from a W211 E500.

Good evening Sir, I'd like to install this fan with all radiators from a AMG 63 to a project. But, I can't "drive" the motor as I need a pulse from ECU. I read in comments that you suggest an Andruino mechanism, but there are some problems of sensors etc. Is possible to by pass the first module and "drive" the motor with that: "CWI PWM Controller" or a controller from "autocoolguy" or you build something? Thank you in advance

I'm not familiar with those other controllers. This is my first project on Arduino. I don't have any problems with my sensors.
