Thank you for this ranking video. Running Wild are my favourite band of all time. Let me tell you my history with this band: I became a Metalhead in 1993. Black Hand Inn was the first album of my life to buy on release day. The Black Hand Inn Tour was the second metal concert of my life and when the big curtain dropped after the intro and they released an inferno with playing Black Hand Inn and Soulless back to back there was no way back for me. I bought every album on release day since that moment. Agree with you on the new album. It's tremendous. I would rank The Rivalry a little higher though, but that could depend on the memories I have with the time of my life it was released. Come on kids unite and let us feed the flames of rage... 🤟

Fukin hell you done it and done it right really spilled your guts. It’s been a busy week so took me a bit to get through this, and I didn’t want to rush through. First, we agree on black hand inn and it’s top level awesomeness. I read the front painting is a depiction of Rolf in 3 stages of life. I think it was in the CD booklet. And that cover is just perfect. I want that on a giant banner in my apartment. Second, your idea about the “pirate theme” as not being what they are ALL about musically and lyrically is spot on. The pirate thing is a spring board, a way for Rolf to project his art and ideas. Third, I hope Rolf sees this. I hope he tours the world one last time. I would lose my mind if he came to the east coast in the states. This guy has still got it and deserves all the credit he is due. Thanks for doing this video. Extra credit for the rum and coke.

Preach! Preach! Preach! 👏 Bravo Mike. Absolutely the best ranking video I’ve ever watched to date. And thank God someone has taken the bull by the horns and said what needs to be said. I’m new to RW like yourself but I’m so glad I discovered and got into them. So good… one of the most important European bands in metal for me. I enjoyed this very much and loved your opinions and comments on everything. I can only hope people actually listen to what you said here. We did not agree on everything … I can’t believe Death Or Glory was your 8 or was it 9, but you still rate it highly as you have them all tightly rated. It is my number 1 and Port Royal is my number 2. I just love the whole overall sound. I think as well “because” they are from the 80’s does have something to do with it. It was from a certain place in time for me which was the greatest place in the history of time. The 80’s was the greatest decade ever… the 90’s doesn’t come close and never could for me but it’s all to do with peoples individual life experiences. Musically the 90’s pretty much died for me but now in todays time I am going back to discover all the gems that came out of that decade that I had no idea had ever happened. Lol, I can’t believe how quickly you have acquired all of the RW catalogue And immersed yourself in it so well. You’ve done great and I for one am very happy to see you appreciate their music so much. 🤘🤘🤘💪🎶🎶🎸🎸🇩🇪🇩🇪🇩🇪

I have 3 CDs coming from X-Wild too which are ex members, Jurgen was showing them recently and I tried them out and loved them. @@sixzerothreeonesevensixnine it's a good listen, occasionally it feels a bit samey but overall I love the pace and the potential for a singalong. Vocals are good, it's the operatic type singing these bands often incorporate that turns me off this style of metal but hes very listenable. Some great standout tracks but on 1st listen Mr Deadhead is the one. I had to play it again as soon as it ended. I think I'll have to go deeper into their back cat and see where this goes.

Great topic! RW is one of my Top 5 metal bands of all time. I did a video on them awhile back. I have all but two of their albums; they hit a rough patch in the early 2000s. The new album, 'Blood On Blood', sounds good on 1st impression. Excellent points about the piracy image of the band. Karl at NOISE Records really liked bands to have a specific 'image' to help them stand out in a scene that was rapidly becoming congested even in the mid 1980s. For all the crud the band took about the pirate image over the years it probably did a lot to help preserve the band long-term. Like you said, there's a real chance that, without the distinct image, they would have gotten lost in the crowd and faded away after 2-3 albums.

I think Running Wild always used the Pirate background as an example for what they are really talking about, mostly all of the time. It more or less always about the fight between good and evil. By the way, if you need more stuff from Rolf, you may should listen to his side project wich is called Toxic Taste. You can definitely hear Rolfs songwriting but with some kind of freshness he maybe didn't wanna do under the name RW. I quite like it.

Early running wild with the satanic stuff was a bit like a mix of priest and venom. Definitely Not black metal like some people say. But lyrically it was dark but with a priest sound. Rolf had bad vocals because of his broken ass English. To me tho it has its charm about it. Definitely they were trying to get into the mix back then. Running wild or really just Rolf found the sound they were looking for. But damn it kinda sucks that metal started to decline a bit in the 90s were RW were at there peak. Then the 2000s rolled around RW was never the same. Nice review🤘

A great ranking video! A Running Wild fan since the late 80s, I am always digging everything about them. My personal list does in fact differ from yours... My TOPs are 1. Branded & Exiled; 2. Black Hand Inn; 3. Gates to Purgatory; 4. Blazon Stone; 5. Under Jolly Roger; 6. Pile of Skulls; 7. Masquerade; 8. Death or Glory; 9. Rapid Forray; 10. Victory. Their first 5 albums shaped my view of them, but the most important experience was to see them live in spring 1986, opening for Mötley Crüe. The crowd went wild in est. point 4 seconds, the Crüe had given them nearly the whole stage, and all of sound and light, amazing. Fast forward to 1994, saw them again, with my soon-to-be wife, on the Welcome to Black Hand Inn-tour, and again a world class gig. A band with a ton of metal classics, nice and humble guys, and a still big fan base.

I'm now going through their entire discography. I don't really get pirate metal either though. Same as viking metal. Go through their albums and listen to the riffs of their songs: mostly heavy metal with some speed metal mixed in. Rock n Roll is rebel music, so sort of pirate music, the rest is just about imagery and that's a big thing in metal. We could as well talk about Horror Metal by evoking a band like Autopsy, it would be more coherent considering the lyrical content and the atmosphere of all their songs. Under Jolly Roger looks way better without that stupid "Warning: Loud Sound Effects" print, that shit ruined the amazing cover artwork. Great ranking, I still have to check out some of their later material. Ahoy Mickey! 🍻🤘

Ranking the Rivalry that low is criminal, haha. That’s Running Wilds Painkiller, late entry and almost perfect. Ballad of William Kid and Adventure Galley, amazing.

@@sixzerothreeonesevensixnine I think Shadowmaker and maybe the first two albums are at the bottom of my list. Port Royal all the way to Rivalry is my favorite era by far. But Victory and The Brotherhood are solid too. I do love that First Years of Piracy comp though. Makes the good songs from the first 3 albums so enjoyable.

I agree, not sure why they’re pigeon holed as “pirate metal” as a lot of their songs are clearly not about pirates. But anyway, can you do a Grave Digger ranking? Would love to hear your list.

oh RW, there is no bad album! long live RW; you totally put down that Rogues en Vogue; that's mid tier album in my playbook, doesn't belong to bare bottom; its got that medieval sound that caries thru the album and that's what I like about it; you need to spin it more times; great video nonetheless

That's an absolutely epic video there! I was never really sold on Rolf's singing on the post-'Shadowmaker' albums, but your video has made me reconsider and want to go back and listen a bit more to those albums. For me, the golden era of Running Wild is the late 80s to early 90s, but your video has also made me want to go back and listen a bit more to their 1994/5-2002 output. I think I'll skip 'Rogues en Vogue' though, because I've already listened to that album so many times, and it's just too sub par for me. Again, epic video you made there!
