I think part of the reason Kiriko's in the 2022 playoffs were doing a lot of healbotting has to do with how insanely broken kitsune rush was back then, and healbotting got you the ult the fastest. But obviously over the last year people have gotten way better at Kiriko and learned how to minmax her more.

Question of the day for Spilo, if you were to build your dream NA team (solely based off people that are in tier 1 and 2 rn so no retired players) that could play any meta. Who would be the people you choose and why?

I wish you’d went into your disagreement with Awkward’s Kiriko more because that’s the style I used to hit top 500 one tricking Kiriko. Not that I disagree with you at all I’d just like to hear more of your thoughts. Why do you think he was able to hit GM so easy doing this? Superior mechanics, skill diff? The pros for me are your teammates really do so little with your healing/suzus. I feel I HAVE to carry every game. Reliance on my team results in less than a 50% win rate. And his philosophy of distraction really works so well. I will say the suzu nerfs definitely hurt this playstyle. But in pubs people aren’t tracking cooldowns. And usually I flank and just use tp if possible. Obviously sometimes you gotta focus your team or something else. Save the suzu for an ult. But 90% of the time I’m starting the fight by hiding and surprise flank or off angle and then close the distance. Your teammates always want to play the frontline pressure game which Kiriko is terrible at I feel like everyone outheals you mostly because tanks don’t understand that they don’t need to take all the resources and actually use cover. This way I’m the one securing elims and making plays that actually help us progress. It’s not that I don’t heal or suzu when I need to but my focus is on off angles, kills, and distraction.

its probably a combination of 1) having the kiriko lucio support lineup (with a kiri/ana you don't have to worry about your team anywhere near as much) and 2) its T1 overwatch which is miles above t500. Also, in organized play (not even just owl but even in t2 and t3 overwatch) you often don't want to try to use the mindset of "I have to carry my team" because it leads to ego plays which are easy to punish with the coordination that is present in organized play (like using suzu to hold an angle for an extra few seconds)

tldr is his Kiriko playstyle is really good, but isn't the complete picture, only like 90% of it. Awkward always boils things down to their absolute simplest, which is excellent for general educational content, and will help the vast majority of players improve, but it's not "the" optimal way to play Kiriko at the highest level in full. That being said, Awkward does a phenomenal job of breaking down abstract concepts like selfishness, aggression, angles, and proactivity and making it extremely digestible for viewers that would otherwise not hear about it, and for that he has my respect. In addition, I'd say the way he coaches the game is objectively GOOD, just maybe not PERFECT when reviewing a literal OWL Champion level Kiriko (which isn't a fair comparison).

I can just say from person experience Awkward helped me climb to Diamond both Spilo helped me get to GM. I think I could've kept doing the Awkward thing and eventually climbed but Spilo made it faster. I don't play as much with my team as you see in vods like this. But I more so try to see how far I can push things while looking for opportunities to tp to flanking teammates or when it's actually advisable for me tp back to my team to suzu an ult or something. Spilo's methodology just gave me more awareness of options and playstyles I can flex to depending on the situation. But I like trying to see how much of the Awkward style I can use and pushing the envelope with it. I'm just better since if it's not working I can adapt more easily now. Just my 2 cents...I think both have their merits. I will say Awkward is a little confusing to people and a lot of people have been lead in the wrong direction with Kiriko. But I don't blame him as much as the playerbase tbh.

@@jamesburnett3594 absolutely I also watch all the big OW creators so it’s hard to tell what’s just Awkward. I did start with him though and I’ve found the most success with his playstyle. I feel I have the most control over my games. I tried alternating playstyles every other game for a while and yeah Awkward’s style felt the most consistent to me. Can’t rely on teammates at all. I can secure elims and know how to survive. Pumping more resources into them is waste most of the time. And yeah absolutely he simplifies things so a lot of the playerbase does misunderstand but it’s such a good starting off point. I also think that Kiriko playstyle got significantly worse the suzu nerfs. I used to suzu myself constantly now I usually tp out earlier and save suzu for necessary moments.

I like Kiri, she is fun to play but horrendous to play against her (especially as a DPS player). I´d say the dev team can nerf her hitbox or the HP.

Her healing and damage is a really cool combination. Feels way better designed than baptiste because baps is aoe healing with no challenge in that regard. Suzu is the everything ability tho, makes it feel laughable that lifegrip doesnt cleanse. The mobility sounds cool but its dependant on another teammate. Kinda takes the options away from her and the cool mobility characters stay to tracer or lucio.

not a hater by any means, but saying "perfectly timed suzu" is like saying cleanest pile of shit. It doesn't mean much when the skill needed is a reaction time of ~half a second, especially in terms of GM1, T500, and OWL players.
