@asian dude RuPaul became famous by doing drag shows. He and Lady Bunny used to live together in abandoned apartments in New York when they were poor and young and while both doing nightly shows at gay clubs back in the days when these shows were not popular like today and hardly payed any money. He became so famous doing them that he met some music producers who created his first hit single Supermodel..which became a number one hit worldwide. After doing music for many years..he created his production company WoW (World of Wonder) and then created his show RuPaul's Drag Race and other shows..which made him the multi-millionaire he is today. Hard work and perseverance is why he is the most famous drag queen artist today. Nobody gave him anything. He worked for it and created something out of nothing. The end.

Antonio Caban I read that Nelson Sullivan, the fellow who made these videos, died fairly young and quite unexpectedly (Heart attack, if I recall.) which makes me wonder: Did he have a will, or at least directives, in place as to who inherited these videos? They obviously ended up in the hands of someone he could trust to know what best to do with them? Were these videos part of one of Nelson's larger community art projects or were they just a personal record? Whatever the answers may be, it's wonderful that this record of NYC prior to Giuliani's reign of terror, that murdered the cultural life blood and nightlife of the city, exists. Thank you Nelson.

I use to visit NYC from '79 till the time I moved there in the mid-80. SO much fun. I'd visit the lower East side and the village (SOHO hadn't been taken over and gentrified yet) where there were amazing clubs, galleries and coffee houses and shops in St. Marks Place. I had a ball. My hair was spiky, my clothes were brought from 2nd hand shops...I was surrounded by people I felt a kinship with. Now, when I visit, it's a bit sad how much it has changed. Friends lived in affordable lofts which a now owned by millionaires. Expensive brownstones everywhere. The clubs are gone. The shops are few and far between. and the coffee houses are Starbucks. I LOVE watching this just reminisce. So much fun back then.

First off, three of those guys with Ru were GORGEOUS! Secondly, I feel bad for Ru. You can tell he was really upset by the encounter and even in the car was very somber. Only once the music came on he started warming back up again.

I agree, of course he was upset, people are born gay, just like I was born straight, it's not a choice. To have someone say "you're a disgrace to the human race" just because they're gay is sad. It makes me angry when people judge like that and are just so cruel about it.

I agree. It's so hateful. I'm glad I live in a very accepting country but there are still a few bigots.

These films are so comforting yet in a way, very painful because it's a spent era. I really hope one day we will be able to see more of Nelson's footage, if not all.

Part of the car's soundtracks makes me see Ru and friends part of a independent movie. Love it: Rebbie Jackson - Centipede Van Halen - Pretty Woman Whodini - Five Minutes of Funk Ashford and Simpson - Solid (Special Club Mix) Dary Hall & John Oates - Out of Touch
