Really since this is a medical issue. Studio should have given him 6wks respite. Shouldn’t have been an issue since the filming schedule was about 9 months and then a few months off. He was an adult through most of the films where he had the tonsil issues (films 4-8). He was 17 during the 4th movie, during which he STARTED having tonsil issues (he didn't have them before). Not sure about the laws in the UK. 17 might be "adult" enough to not have child laws apply. Not sure. But during 5 and on, he was absolutely a legal adult. It literally wasn't his parents' responsibility. And the time during which he first started having issues he was 18 very soon after. Speaking from experience, you don't get your tonsils out because you got tonsillitis once. It has to become chronic. Most people get it once, it goes away. No surgery needed. But if it continues, that means surgery is needed. Which means time has to pass for docs to escalate to surgery. At which point he would have been 18. Idk if you know any 18 year old men, but if my brother had been in this situation, he would have ignored our parents begging him to get the surgery, and kept on working, no doubt.

@@wonderfulgray It was reduced, He went from a character to a caricature. As someone who watched the movies through the 1st time it was an issue to me. Because he was just a joke. And he never got any character development. You could even say the If later books were affected by the movies portrayal. It was never existent, Other than to be played up for jokes. The Choice to remove his bad-ass moments or to give them to hermione diminishes both characters. Just because you're happy with your experience doesn't mean the character is not diminished. Your argument isn't even an argument it's just an opinion that isn't even backed up by examples. Ron screaming for no fucking reason in the first challenge because of comedic value -- Hermione calling Ron Ronald like she's his mother. Ron Not being a fucking bad-ass when Following the spiders and instead making a comedic joke about following butterflies and then turning them into a slobbering idiot rather than having a bad-ass moment where a guy has to face his ultimate fear and does it with his chin raised. How about the fact that for no fucking reason at all throughout every single movie he is consistently eating as a joke. That's not a character that's a punchline. That's not a character with development. Other then in goblet of fire when he gets angry with harry -- Except for they don't do a good job of displaying or making it clear to the audience Just how much and how often Ron is overshadowed and why he would get to that state of mind as to willfully not believe his best friend. As someone who has studied film production and is currently studying and has worked on screen plays in the past, displaying that information isn't an impossiblity. Rons Personality in the movies Consists of screaming, eating, blubbering, and making a fool out of himself for the sake of a punchline intented only for the audience and has no bearing on the story or world itself. In the books hes a quick witted, loud mouthed troublemaker, Who's lazy but extremely good with tactics -- Who's 3rd best in defense against the dark arts under Harry and of course Hermione. The kind of guy who grumbles and whines, But will stand on a broken ankle to square up against a man who you believe killed 13 people with a single curse and broke out of a prison no one else has ever escaped from before. The kind of guy that can be driven half man by unknown forced locked deep within the ministry-- with blood pooling in his mouth and forming bubbles of blood at the corner of his mouth- but still decides to fight on and do all he can even when completely out of his mind. Ron is a lazy extremely tactically sound bad-ass who at any situation will jump in the defense of his woman, In the movies When snake calls her money an insufferable note all, Ron agrees out loud for ever one to hear. When book run here snape call Hermione I mean sufferable know-it-all he calls snape out for his bullshit. In the movies, Ron and Hermione's bickering always seemed a result of ron's idiocy, And never really came off as banter or teasing and rather just often felt hostile. In the books Ron and hermione just love to fucking verbally spar, Her mind he has never had anyone who's been able to keep up with her wit in the way that Ron does. There is even a scene when Harry is getting annoyed by their bickering and asks them to stop and ask them just to get along and they both look at him like they've been interrupted in some sort of sacred dance. My experience started with the movies with me buying the wands from noble collection when no one else had them-- My experience and opinion was formed from the movies, As Ron had in my opinion the best out of the 3 actors when it came to them as younger kids. Harry or Daniel Radcliffe was far too awkward and still getting into his paces, Hermione or Emma Watson always seemed one note and a little over the top, also her eyebrows just always go wild and get EXTREMELY animated in a wat that diesnt really fit contextually with the emotion and never really seem natural , However Rupert Grint just just naturally fit the role so perfectly, However as the movies went on I personally felt that opportunities for him to grow we're lacking and that there were just large gaps within the movies where it felt like his character didn't have anything to do and there was just so much for hermione to do that at that point I decided to read the books

My husband had had it done as a kid and he convinced me it was ok. So we did it and it vastly improved our son's life. Doc said his tonsils were some of the largest he had ever seen. Our son had sleep apnea before (despite being only 9 years old, and thin). After, no more apnea. No more throat infections. No more ear infections (a swollen throat can put pressure on the ear canals and actually cause infections because fluid can't drain) He's had no major health issues since then, and that was 4 years ago. I feel so bad for Rupert. I'm glad he finally was able to get it taken care of.

I constantly had a runny nose (so severe that I had to keep a tissue box on my desk in public school) and every sneeze I had was snot filled. I ended up losing a lot of weight because I wasn’t sleeping much and I had bags under my eyes. The only way I can describe it for people who haven’t had it is like constantly having an allergic reaction, and on and on. Also getting them removed doesn’t mean you can’t talk. As an audience member, it’s easy to read this as character development, but it sucks to know that Rupert was suffering behind the scenes. 😔 This is and was abuse. Tight schedule or no, it would’ve been perfectly fine if he’d missed a few interviews to tend to a medical issue. Filming, I can understand more to a certain extent, because scheduling calendars are nothing short of a nightmare during production, and cancelling/moving scenes around can mean months worth of delays until the crew can get permitted for a new date at the same location. If the schedule was already locked in and arrangements couldn’t be made, that’s one thing. But between GOF and OOTP, there’s no reason they couldn’t have allowed him to have this dealt with. 🤷🏼♀️ This is insane.

My dad refused to let me get my tonsils out because he thought it wasn’t enough times a year to constitute removal, and didn’t want me missing more school (even though I was missing at least 1-2 weeks every other month or so due to still having the tonsils in). I think he just didn’t want to pay for the surgery. However, when I moved back to my moms, we got a tonsillectomy done ASAP. I had been suffering from tonsillitis for about 3 months, the first month I was with my dad and the rest with my mom. I still had it when I got the tonsillectomy, but after being on antibiotics for about 2 months they finally swelled down enough for removal. It was the most life changing surgery I ever had. I do wish I didn’t get an adenoidectomy done at the same time though.

Even after two regular surgery's and a emergency surgery. Must be nice to have that be the worst thing that has happened to you. But at the same time I know we all walk different paths. Everything is different for everyone...

Also modern medical practice in UK and Australia they don’t remove tonsils unless they really have to - tonsils are apart of your immune system - I had tonsillitis a few times in my life

His parents should be ashamed. When your child is in excruciating pain, fuck everything else YOU MAKE SOMETHING WORK AND GET THEM HEALTHY!

I could be wrong but tonsils prone to infection especially strep A can result in rheumatic fever. That is generally not good. And if that's left untreated can really put a strain on the heart. So leaving infections long time ongoing not recommended

Suffered with chronic tonsillitis my whole childhood. Every second month or so I'd get sick from it until I got my tonsils removed

Emma Watson went to Brown and they worked around her schedule but they wouldn’t let Rupert get his surgery and take 2-6 weeks off filming??

Just a random point but in the uk, nowadays, Dr's won't tend to do anything about tonsillitis, you are just supposed to go through it.

Honestly I'd be really unhappy with my time if I were him. This alone is horrific but also they butchered his character and I do think that had an impact on his popularity.

I know what its like to live with bad tonsils. Its not so bad getting them out as an adult. I heard about this awhile back. That sucks.

That’s fucking inhumane they wouldn’t let him get a surgery he needed

They should have filmed all his scenes first so he could tend to this and then just finish filming the scenes he wasn't in.

They cauterize the area where your tonsils were. At best you can do a horse whisper the first few days. I had mine out when I was 22.

I couldn't do it. I used to get tonsillitis every year for like 4 years straight and it's some of the worst pain I have ever gone through

Everyone was getting their tonsils removed in the mid 90’s…I got mine removed by the surgeon putting his whole hand inside my mouth using a small surgical instrument..I was fully awake but they had numbed my mouth
