Another reason to leave a bit more air in the arrangements, or not stack up to many sounds/instruments/voices on top of each other is to give the listeners brain a better chanse to evaluate whats going on "sound vice". All this from a superblunt Swede of course,, 😅. @alecbrits
10 ай бұрын
I can’t remember the exact settings for this video. The biggest thing is to ensure that the compressor lets the transient through. So it’s likely on a medium attack setting, fast release. Low cut around 60-80hz, then pushing up around 100 on the shelf. The bigger change to the tone is the fact that I’m using a firm beater, and the kick front head is off. The mic is placed in the centre of the drum pointed directly at the beater with about 30cm of distance. Most of the tone is the drum, the dynamics, the part and the mic choice. The shelford helps, but it’s not the main part of the sound. :)
@68Snaps

Thanks for the great video. I did compare it to your Neve 8801 video, and the sound is strikingly different. Actually it seems, going back and forth, that you have no highs at all here. @@alecbrits Thanks for your reply. The 8801 has a cleaner mic pre which might be better for classical music or when you want to capture the original source . It is part of the 88 series console. Their SPX/DPX channel strip has more of the 1073 sound which you may prefer but it does not have a compressor on it. I really like the Shelford channel strip but I was put off my its lack of EQ in the 10-12k area which is very popular for adding more sparkle. The AMS Neve SPX/DPX has EQ in this area and is cheaper than the Shelford. The quality control is good but not great like Rupert Neve Anything above 16k is used just for air. I have the Portico pres and compressors. With the silk button pushed in, it gets some of the 1073 sound but the Shelford pre with the red/blue and texture control its a lot more flexible. I am actually thinking of the API channel strip might be a better option for me as I already have a Neve type sound and it has EQ in the 10-12k area. The API has faster transients which gives a faster attack like SSL but it has some color at the same time.

Of course this is going to be as amazing as any other Rupert Neve stuff. It's better actually. With older Neve you had the character, and with Focusrite (when Neve was with them) it was known to be very smooth. This is the best of both worlds. Want clean? It does it well. Want character...it has it ALL. It's the best Neve has desgined in all ways. The price point is fair considering. It is a full on channel strip, not just a pre amp on its own. Consider getting AMS 1073 equivelant (pre amp, eq, and comp) its about the same price. RND stuff is amazing. Get some RND.

I have a Shelford channel to track and mix rap vocals. I got it back in 2020. Thinking about getting another one. What are the place holders under the units?

How do you think the Shelford Channel + U67 compares to the U87 going into the CL1B? I am considering this as my first vocal chain.

Hey Jordan! I have not used the 87 CL1B combo yet, so I can’t really give you an honest answer. The CL1B is only a compressor, which pre would you buy to pair with the 87? :)

hi I am thinking of getting one of these, and I wondered if you can help. when you used the bass DI I noticed you send it 'thru' to record the amp and back into shelford channel mic line in. How would I do this if I am using the ox box for guitar? As I am not mic'ing the guitar I taking a line out signal straight from ox box... Would I plug the line out into the line in on shelfor at back using a regular jack lead? I am wary that both the instrument ins & DI at front would already be taken to capture the di guitar. Or do I need to get a standalone DI box?
@alecbrits

Hi :) the ox box’s line output should go into the shelfords line input in the rear. One of the shelfords was the Di The other was the amp microphone.

not sure if it's a correct question to ask, but how does the preamp section of the Shelford Channel compare to Manley Force, which you also just reviewed?
@musicgalaxy8832
2 жыл бұрын
Manley is a different world. The Shelford is great but the headroom of the Force is unheard of.The other thing about Neve is that is way operpriced in my opinion.
@musicgalaxy8832
2 жыл бұрын
@@jenssorquist172 Sure, every gear is expensive and I buy it all the time because analog rocks, but Neve (RND specifically) is way too overpriced. Manley is just another level, but hey… thats just my opinion:). Matter of taste
@alecbrits
2 жыл бұрын
Hey Epposh! :) the Manley is a bit of a different beast all together. The RND shelford mic pre feels more open and has better noise performance to my ears. The price point on the Manley makes it a really good option to get wicked tone and fantastic usability.
@alecbrits
2 жыл бұрын
Depends on how you look at headroom, the Manley does have great headroom, but it cannot be saturated or driven hard from the front. That allows it to be a wicked open sounding mic amp, but does not allow for a wide tonal range. The price point on the shelfords is high, but the build quality is also incredible.

Hey Darwin! That’s not really possible to answer, it’s more of a question of what is needed for each track/artist. My alround favourites are the API512’s and the RND shelfords. :)

Really considering buying one or two. I’m very curious about how the 88M stacks up against the 88RLB, since the 88M is powered by the USB 3.0. I read that because of the USB power, the 88M loses 6 dB of headroom, but that it is “still plenty” for any studio..

I’m banging my head against the wall right now about all the ad/da talk.. I don’t know if it’s be worth it to spend $3,000 on a nicer converter like a Lynx Aurora (N) just to get the extra 5-10% out of the mics / pres I have. I’m also really curious how the conversion is in the 88M… they claim it is high-end

That’s the thing, I own a bae preamp , and compared to AMS 1073 and they just sound the same , BAE just sounds expensive ( like the real 1073 ) and for me the preamp itself sounds better and more flexible for vocals compared to the shelford preamp section . “ more flexible to mix”
