What is meditation? Beautiful talk about being the presence of awareness. For more please visit Rupert Spiras channel here on youtube or his website non-duality.rupertspira.com/home
Concentration, contemplation, meditation, three forms of attention. But the first two are with the mind directed to an object. Only meditation is free of thoughts. No goal. Nothing to reach. No one there.. Empty awareness. 💎

In my experience this is impossible to be understand by any explanation. Even a brilliant explanation as Mr. Spira gives us. Being aware of awareness, or objectless meditation, it’s so Irreducibly simple that our minds can’t believe in it. It took me the last 7 months to star seeing the gap and it was always there I just couldn’t recognize it, I thought it was a fail in my poor concentration ability. But it was not. We can find it when our mind blinks when it naturally turns the attention from one object to another, from one one thought to another or get distracted. The mind goes off and then on again but the awareness remains. It’s amazing !

Thank you for posting this video! What a gift and I'm very grateful for it - it sums up incredibly well how this approach compares to more conventional forms of meditation like mindfulness - I actually find it a lot more relaxing to meditate now because I'm not tackling the mind - I just ask myself one of Rupert's questions "Am I aware (of awareness) at this moment?" and tune into this incredibly peaceful state that's always there in a very comforting way and somehow the mind just dissolves into it. You really learn how to let things be because you're tuning into this ever-present thing that's there all the time anyway.

I just recently came upon Rupert Spira's videos. He does a really good job of explaining these things. Im at that weird place where some days I can sit and meditate without moving for an hour and totally quiet the mind where I almost forget I have a body then be relaxed and content for the rest of the day. Then, there are other days where I want to slap myself to make me shut up. I've heard that this happens to people and I hope I am making progress toward being in a constant meditative state. I really like getting away from my emotional, reactive, undisciplined self.

You only can get away from that unreal self by seeing that it is not your self, it is a false self. The one that sees it is the real self. That false self can never reach peace by trying to reach it. Because it is not real. Whatever it does it does not work because it is done by an unreal idea. Only see that you are aware of all that doing brings you peace. Not to you but it shows there is peace always.. Without you trying to get it, you see? It is there already. Meditation is being aware... trying to get peace, that is just the struggle, just empty awareness without you. . Let it be is peace. The war is not you, you are witnessing..

I don't understand: if meditation is what we are and no action needed so I'll just stay in my thoughts and mind and i will never be free from my self. How do you get to the state of relaxation and awareness without doin anything?

Just to 'BE AS WE ARE' is possible with a pure, sattvic, steady, one-pointed, serene, luminous mind. Then, the first step in yoga and meditation is to prepare the mind otherwise meditation and samadhi is a nice dream.

The ego imagines not the thought by itself. The ego uses the thinking mind and the emotional mind in order to live its illusions. And in reality the problem it is not created by the thoughts but by the ego which is a field of energy (with has tamasic and rajasic nature) and which has a very strong hypnotized power. This hypnotized power of ego-energy and which nature is LUST and DESIRE makes the intellect dull and incable to remain always aware of its true nature which is pure awareness. The intellect by nature is only a movement of consciousness and in reality identicall with consciousnes and due to egoic energies has lost its luminsity and the capaity to reflect without distortion the PEACE and the ANANDA of the Atman and realize its identity with Atman (consciousness).

Gary Bentlage Dear Gary, you can read about gunas and mind in this link elmisattva-nonduality.blogspot.com.es/2013/10/the-three-gunas.html If after reading this text you still have any question you can ask!

Gary Bentlage Dear Gary, What Rupert's says is also theory for you. The gunas is something that always are operating in you even now you read and write these words. Awakening is not possible by listening but by practicing Without a proper understanding of mind's functioning and without increasing sattva what says Rupert will remain a theory for you. And also the concept of Rupert that the ego is a thought is 100% false. The ego is vital energy and its essential nature is desire. Ego is lasciviousness, gluttony, anger, envy, pride, greed and all these are not a thought. Finally to eliminate all these from your subconscious mind no matter what your practice is, it takes a lot of time. There is no short cut as you imagine. Om Shanti

Dear Gary I am interested only about truth, and the truth is that the ego in not a thought but is a multiplicity. Ego is fundamentally lust and desire which modifies as greed, pride, envy, gluttony, desire, lasciviousness, arrogant, jealousy, fear, anger, depression, etc. Thoughts are just sounds, they are not the ego. Ego has nothing to do with thoughts. Only an ignorant can claim that the ego is only a thought. The 'I' sense and not the ´I´ thought is only the fundamental aspect of the ego. That's all. Ego is like a tree. The trunk is the I sense and desire and all other expressions are its branches. This is the truth you like or not. Do as you like, you cannot cheat your self forever. No matter what you practice you have to meet all your shadows that you carry in your subconscious mind and to dissolve them somehow. You have to see everything you carry in your mind in one or another way. No matter the way you practice the ego energy doesn´t dissolve easily. The dissolution of ego is a long time process (and this only if you practice regularly and sincerely, otherwise liberation or self-realization takes many lifetimes). Fast food spirituality doesn't exist, except in the fantasy of the ego. I wish you to be free from your egos and delusions and realize the truth. Om peace

Of course happiness depends on the condition of mind. Only a pure sattvic mind can remain unshaken and absorbed fully in its source (awareness). Without a such a mind eternal and uninterrupted Bliss and peace are only a fantasy.

Losers have goals, winners have systems. I'm not seeing a clear system here. He seems awake but, like Krishnamurti seems unable to give the complete map. His use of similes and metaphors to compare states is golden though.

This is not about systems, winners or losers. For that, you can ask Trump. This is about realizing your true nature, the place of perfect peace free of all conditions. Trump is of the world, You (not your mind) is not.

Off-topic here, but systems are an almost no-fail concept, one too many times people fall into the trap of doubt/fear/under performance because of a lack of a system and honestly to me it seems like such a highly intellectual topic that no one get's close to realising this truth.

As for meditation, anyone up for an honest truth, meditation is pretty darn simple if you listen to it properly from a proper teacher or you read a good enough book, I don't care what people might tell you, meditation is one of the more simpler things to practice on your own. BUT ofcourse a teacher is probably invaluable to those who have no hope of getting proper instructions. BEST damn thing in the world right now is my meditation practice, it's like cleansing, euphoric, insightful and absolutely delicious ie I like it very much.

Rupert is oversimplifying when he talks about what mediation is thought to be: Nowadays there´s lotsa scientific research on mediation, and mediation is divided into two groups: Focused attention AND Detached awareness. When measured with EEG, long-term Buddhist meditators are mainly in their everday presence in the Detached awareness-mode. But usually it takes practice to get there - no matter do you call your path direct or progressive. The human body/mind is a complex matter.

This bad rap for meditation is infantile - there is no news in this - what he is not making clear is how we reside in "being" while remaining unconscious of the black bull of the passions looking to gore you through your solar plexus - meditation is intensified life - that's all - its reveals the cracks in your capacity to hold that intensity in awareness for real - & reveals the dishonesty of thinking your attained - its the ultimate dishonesty detector - and dishonesty is what we are up too!

All these new world meditation masters talking the same thing over and over yet with no practical solution, simply be, wtf does that mean for someone who is struggling to survive, how come someone living in a harsh environment can practice “being”, of course if you live a life of doing nothing and making money outta these sorts of speeches which ppl fall for you can live peacefully, all these “just be” masters simply have a life free of stress and at an age which m everything is sorted out then they call themselves peaceful and awaken etc. Take him to Syria or somewhere he has to work his ass off to survive and see if he still talks about “simply being” BS
