A rual fire dept with hardly no money took a group of 16 lineman in during hurricane Florence. They fed us everyday and made sure we had what it took to battle the elements and the destruction of Florence. Providing food and shelter. People knock on these small departments. They wasn’t even funded by our co op but did what they did to help us. Real hero’s don’t wear capes

Back in the 70's when northern Il departments were mostly volunteer I took the challenge. Greatest adventure in my life. Drove a 1955 Pirsch engine 213. Loved every minute of it. I have a pair of bunker boots (M-11) I'd be willing to donate to this department. These boots are never used as I recently bought them and they don't fir company has a final sale policy. Let me know. LZvFD retired Illinois

Cleveland, MS has an all volunteer FD (Insurance rated 4)....the money the city saves in taxes from having a paid department goes into equipment/upkeep.....before I moved awhile back, they had an old 50's model GMC that was used for parades...but...they kept it in top notch working condition, and one night, at the scene of a major fire, it was pumping right next to their newest pumper....and doing equally well....considering the age difference.

@Fercia Rameriz-Gonzales-Ricardo really you are that brainwashed? So you say it's better to have these volunteers get hurt or die than to have a rich person donate funds? It would be better the department crumble and fail than be properly supported? You would rather see lives and property at risk?

@Fercia Rameriz-Gonzales-Ricardo Really you cherry pick. You realize that Your trump doesn't believe in democracy, he hordes his money at the expense of good american's. Your Walton family basically destroys good ol' america. So you can't even answer the simple questions I posed before. You have demonstrated you would rather hurt your fellow americans than encourage people that want and demand your loyalty while not helping those that need. Just to stack money they will never use just to hold it over people like you. Do your self a favor and try to truly understand what you you are speaking about. Your ignorance is sickening an saddening.

The sad thing is this video is 9 years old and the problem still exists. I ran with a rural OH department with a virtual non-existent tax base and the trustees will not add a new levy to add part-time (5days/week-10 hours/day) firefighters to be able to respond during the day when all-volunteer departments are most vulnerable.

how is cullman FD not servicing the surrounding areas? I live up north of the border, and any town/city fire department also services all of the rural areas as well. Minus the big big cities like Toronto.

How many communities in the US are running ancient equipment like this? I see a lot of comparable videos on KZitem. Also, no radios, (in some videos) is this "normal" for rural Kansas, Montana, Dakotas, Oklahoma, etc, ect...

Many!! A department I volunteer at is trying to purchase a new engine/tanker @ $1.14 million to replace two trucks that are very close to the end of their service life. We are looking at 30-36 months for delivery so we have to keep what we have running and costs to maintain are in the stratosphere.

Why is there such a huge budget for military spending, while your emergency services are in such desperate need for funds. I feel with many things in the US has a strange balance. (But probably you also think that about us in Europe :-) ).

Why are they not able to assess a tax levy, the way fire districts, lake protection districts, etc do? Here in Wisconsin, fire protection is a Township, Village, or City responsibly, so depending on their size and tax base, municipalities either provide fire protection themselves, or band together with other municipalities to have a jointly owned Fire Department. In my home county, surrounding townships and 2 villages pay a fee to a City Fire Department to provide fire protection outside the city limits. Isn't fire protection something that people should expect to be paying taxes for, the same way they pay for Schools, roads, and law enforcement??

In the UK outside of the major metropolitan areas fire and rescue is a county council responsibility, my county for a 2200 square mile area has 39 stations some wholetime manned some mixed and many manned by on-call firefighters (paid for training and each time they get called out) along with a training facility, nice thing is that there has been a general investment nationally in HVPs so you don't see lots of tankers being used just to bring water supply to the scene which is a huge saving in manpower requirements especially in the daytime in rural areas

In New Zealand there is only one body that runs the fire and emergency responce, it is paid for by a levy that is put on any insurance policy that is taken out for property, this means that by and large there is consistent cover and standards across country and everybody pays, the government also puts into the costings to cover uninsured people and state owned property
@brentOhlookAsnake

It’s possible that they protect non incorporated areas. Meaning they don’t pay fire tax. So residents “subscribe” for fire protection. Similar to insurance. Or they can be charged for the service if they aren’t subscribed.

There probably isn't much tax base and most of these depts are independent. They serve the community but run like a business. My fire company is that way. We don't get breaks on utilities and other expenses. We do have a tax levy on the 3 towns we cover. But it may add up to 20k because the population is small.. We have to fundraise and rely on donations.
