I’m a big Rush fan as well. I’m truly surprised at 2 things they did as a band. 1. Release such a horrible distorted mix on “Vapor Trails” and it took them years to remix it and 2. they did the R40 tour. By the time they did that tour Geddy’s voice was shot. I still love the band but after the “Clockwork Angels” tour that should have been it. Actually “Snakes and Arrows” was the last tour that I thought Geddy’s voice sounded good but that’s just my opinion.

I absolutely love that they are just as tight live as they are in their albums. They get alot of shit for their late 80s and 90s albums but they are masterpieces in their own right. Power Windows has a phenomenal sound, Roll the Bones has a great sound, Counterparts has one of their best instrumental songs and even Vapor Trails is a very great comeback. This band doesn’t have any dull moments. The prog epics are beyond words and keep even the most ADHD ridden fans like myself interested in songs like 2112 and the Cygnus books, the more popular songs like Tom Saywer and Subdivisions and Spirit of Radio are complex and have very intricate lyrics and instrumentation. Long live Rush! I’m 15 and I’m lucky to be able to listen to their music.

Once broadcast in Los Angeles in 1987, KTTV-TV Channel 11, my father recorded this on VHS and I watched it the next day. It was one of the most breathtaking live musical performances I had Ever seen. I ended up idolizing Alex Lifeson and wanted to play like him for Years. By 19, I finally figured out how to approximate Spirit of the Radio and even did a light cover of it when I was 25 with a drummer friend (who came REAL close to Peart's technique, he was pretty good). How blessed were we all to be alive during what may very well likely be the greatest era in the history of recorded music. I was very thankful to had made it to a few RUSH shows starting 2002 at Staples Center while we still had Peart with us... They still had it. YYZ sounded better than ever. Spirit of the Radio sounded better than ever. Just when you thought they were already the best, they got even better. I can rarely say that about any other band.

@@supercommando440I don’t think they do match tbh. But, like you, I don’t necessarily have an expectation that they should. I view live as it’s own thing and I can appreciate both. One of the most closely matched bands between studio and live I’ve seen recently is The Warning. Their music is way less complex than Rush's of course, but it’s still impressive that they are able to do it. However, they are siblings who started as a band from tweens and early teens, so they’ve honed it. Though even early on they were tight, just less polished obviously.

@@alanstrom2221 I saw Kiss back in junior high, it would have been 75-76. It was cool, but I was way up front, and as a young bass player, even I could tell that they kind of sucked as musicians. Not long after I saw Rush, it was like night and day: the difference in musicianship, songwriting, composition, technique, precision and lyrics. Once I got into high school, and realized that there was more to life than getting drunk in the woods and self-aggrandizement (you can look it up) I left Kiss behind and grew up. Rush was the type of band that progressed through the years and we grew together. That's one of the keys to their success. I was there, Maple Leaf Gardens, in the gold seats off to the right of the stage. My friends dad had got us tickets had a corporate membership. Anyway, was a great night. BTW, enjoyed the clockwork angels tour in Hamilton more, they just kept getting better with age!

I think you might be surprised at the amount of people in any Rush audience that would be able to knock off large chunks of those tunes- musicians liking Rush is pretty much the core of the audience. At any show, you could probably assemble 5 to 10 pretty good Rush cover bands.

For me, it’s impossible to pinpoint Rush’s heyday. Every decade and era have their own pinnacle. I feel this concert is them displaying their prowess on power and speed on their classic era songs while eagerly presenting the fact that “we aren’t interested in ending our sound evolution at Moving Pictures. We have more to offer if you’ll come with us “. Long live Rush!

It's funny because I started drumming after The Professor passed, because I was so impacted by it. I watched so many of his drumming videos, I started developing a desire to hit Da Skins. I grew up listening to this band in high school. That drum solo in the Working man song, is still one of my all time favorites. I'll be 60 this year, shouldn't have waited so long. Well, in any case, that's how inspiring their work is. Miss you Buddy.

You never lose the music that got you thru high school. First time was Moving Pictures. This one after I was out. Thought Geddy was selling out with that "paddle bass" and the looks of the 80s. He brought Rickenbacker popularity to new levels. Pretty sure they played Red Barchetta at the Providence show.
@Sheehy223

I think he switched to the Steinbergers because his bass tech constantly pissed and moaned about having to maintain his Rics. The 'Berger is definitely by far his weakest sound and I have no idea why anyone says they like it, doesn't really sound like Geddy to me at all. He had a pretty great sound with the WAL's he switched to later, at least in the studio.
