These 2 monstrous inflatable rabbits came out of huge hats on either side of the stage at some point during the show (getting close to the end) and then they had roadies bounce them to the beat of Tom Sawyer so it looked they were dancing to it. So funny. And the bunnies made an appearance on the next tour too from what I remember. I saw 3 shows on the Presto tour within something like 10 days. Both Toronto shows and the show in Albany, NY a week or so later. Such great memories of seeing them live!

By 1990 I hadn't liked a new Rush album very much since Signals, I stopped keeping up with new releases, then in summer of '90 I heard that intro to Show don't tell and thought it was so killer, I was like who the hell is that?? My friend said that's Rush's new song. I couldn't go buy it fast enough!! My love of Rush had returned.

"Chain Lightning" was inspired by a night of Neil stargazing with his daughter. The daughter would tragically die a few years later, which led to Rush going on a long hiatus.

Not just his daughter’s tragic accident, it was also his wife’s death from breast cancer soon after that which devastated his psyche and he needed time away to put his life together again away from work.

Once again, 80's Rush over 70's all day long. Geddy really paid attention to the choruses on this record. Think I remember reading in an interview that Geddy would drive around in his car listening to the Presto demos practicing different ways of singing these choruses before going to the studio. Definitely paid off on these two songs.

A very under-reacted to album from Rush, & this is going deep into their 80's cuts, which is my favourite era from the band so I'm delighted to see you check this one out. Not a bad song on it and all the tracks are really unusual but always carry that 80's Rush DNA all the way through it. Synths aren't quite so heavy but they still make a beautiful difference to the overall soundscape.
@HansMcGruber

Chain Lightning is a great deep cut by them. As u said, another very different tune, but yet still sounds like Rush. You will hear a lot of that on the album, and that is the beauty of this band. They pushed their own boundaries, but still managed to sound like themselves.

The albums from PRESTO on start focusing on guitars again (less keyboards!). The sound gets heavier, reminiscent of their earlier days and signalling the grunge era to come. Though the melodies are still beautiful and Neil's lyrics continue to mature and are the perfect balance of emotion and intellect.

I think that "chain lightning" is a reference to the exchange of energies between generations of life familiarly, between planets and their electrical solar environments, between influence and hero recognition, between people on a day to day basis all around us. Energy transfer of all kinds is how the universe knows itself and how we know our selves.

the galactic arms of the milky way are themselves a birth and renewal in constant action. the microcosm of life here on earth is much the same. rush and neil in particular are keen on the idea and got me started in astronomy.
@stevenpipes1555

@@MrJugger99777 absolutely correct. The spiral arms of our, and all galaxies, are essentially electric transmission lines feeding them with electricity. Electricity is the fundamental energy that pervades the universe, the either! It powers the stars, moves the planets, creates the magnetic fields that protect us from the radiation of our star, comands the motions and migrations of animals, and powers the weather that we all live in fear and respect of. It is an omnipresent force that pervades everything! There is no such thing as empty space and i believe that Neil was well on board, or at least, very curiously aware of the logic of this line of thinking. "Thunderbolts project"

This album came at a very significant time for me. During the Power Windows and Hold Your Fire phase I was enlisted in the USMC and this time was quite a chaotic time, plus drinking way too much!! When Presto came out I seemed to be out of that fog and into a new phase. I remember this album well as RUSH also was coming out of that synth era and moving back to more guitar oriented songs. I thinks this came out late fall 1989 as I recall. Love this album. Love all of it!!!

Chained Lightening makes the case for "optimism" as a natural state of being. You feel people are foolish? Well, ignorance breeds imitation. If you want love - Invite it. Promote your values. Be the change you want in the world. We can effect each other positively. In short - We live in a benevolent universe. Act like it.
