After a discouraging stint in England, Peart returned home to concentrate on music where he joined Rush, a Toronto band, in mid-1974, six years after its formation. It's fantastic that there's a sort of bass solo from Geddy that runs concurrent with Alex's solo. The sound AL goes with on his guitar is just so perfect for the theme of the song: Cold, stark, apocalyptic. His riffing at 3:25 nails it. GL's background keyboards are spooky, bleak and atmospheric. And then of course you have The Master driving it all with his marching drumbeat; it captures perfectly the world "1001" is trying to escape from. Awesome, awesome tune...

Thank you for posting this! I was 15 when GUP was released. This video was very popular at the time. Muchmusic played the Hell out of it.

One humanoid escapee One android on the run Seeking freedom beneath a lonely desert sun Trying to change its program Trying to change the mode, crack the code Images conflicting into data overload 1 0 0 1 0 0 1 SOS 1 0 0 1 0 0 1 In distress 1 0 0 1 0 0 Memory banks unloading Bytes break into bits Unit one's in trouble and it's scared out of its wits Guidance systems break down A struggle to exist, to resist A pulse of dying power in a clenching plastic fist 1 0 0 1 0 0 1 SOS 1 0 0 1 0 0 1 In distress 1 0 0 1 0 0 Replays each of the days A hundred years of routines Bows its head and prays To the mother of all machines, all machines 1 0 0 1 0 0 1 SOS 1 0 0 1 0 0 1 In distress 1 0 0 1 0 0 It replays each of the days A hundred years of routines Bows its head and prays To the mother of all machines, mother of all machines
