Back in the day, this song was the measuring stick on whether you were a real Rush fan or not.😂

Definitely here for the Rush. Keep them coming. You may want to check out The Fountain of Lamneth which is the next song from the same album. It is also experimental and has multiple sections.

This is my favorite Rush album. First one with Neil Peart, and he absolutely crushed it.

@compnnburns8831 right my bad. I spent most my life believing Carress of Steel came before Fly By Night. Same year on both record sleaves. I thought Bytor and Snowdog was part 2.

When this album first came out, it was not well received! The record industry wanted RUSH to continue their path as a Led Zeppelin sounding band! RUSH chose to be themselves and rolled the dice with their next album - 2112! The rest is history!

Yep, still hangin' as long as it's Rush. This is early Rush, 3rd album, unbelievably the album that nearly ruined Rush, One of my favorite Rush albums, but I can see how a song about going bald ('I Think I'm Going Bald') might grate like nails on a chalkboard to teens and young adults. Remember this was only about 20 years since the dawn of Rock & Roll, so there were no oldies yet, with very few middle-aged and no elderly into rock music like some of us old farts today. Luckily their next and last-chance album, '2112' was a stupendous success, completely ignoring the record companies' demands, refusing to sell out and deciding to do the music they want to do, repercussions be damned. It's success insured that Rush could keep doing it their way with no further interference from record execs. The record companies ended up laughing all the way to the bank, as Rush became 3rd, behind only The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, with most CONSECUTIVE albums reaching gold and platinum sales status. Starting with '2112.' Rush definitely should have left that tune as as their first instrumental, as it's a killer tune, but the subject matter really is a turn-off. One of two Rush songs, out of their 19 studio albums that I usually skip over when listening to full albums. I'll let you guess the other song...but hey, out of a discography of about 178 or so songs, that really ain't bad. To hell with Meatloaf and "two out of three ain't bad," Rush don't play that game! That being said, you need to do a reaction to another song on the Caress Of Steel album, another multi-part, story driven "rock symphony;" 'The Fountain of Lamneth.' It's about seven and a half minutes longer than 'The Necromancer' and their longest story-driven "rock symphony" besides '2112,' lasting an impressive 19+ minutes.

Def should check out The Fountain Of Lamneth, their first sidelong epic that would ultimately lead to 2112. 😊

This was off of their third album. The were in their early twenties, wanting to find their limits and push past them into new creative territory. They were super high when recording this. Next you should listen to The Fountain of Lamneth, which was on the same album. And after that, 2112 if you haven't already. That was the first side of their fourth album and a kind of middle finger to their record company who were trying to tell them to do more mainstream top twenty songs.

I am here for Rush! This was fro their third album and early Rush had a lot of sci-fi influences. This is progressive rock and prog rock takes some influences from classical music with different movements and tempo changes. Prince Bytor appears in a previous song. Bytor and the Snow Dog. There is performance from R30 of this song and where Alex is the Snow Dog and Geddy is Bytor. They have fun with it on stage. Fountain of Lamneth is another one I think you would like. It is also off Caress of Steel. I will also recommend Cygnus book 1 from A Farewell to Kings Cygnus book 2 from Hemispheres Two songs where the storyline continues. Cheers

Said no one ever. Geddy and Alex hated it and only did it because it was a pet project of Neil's. Rush didn't have any bad songs but Tai Shan is commonly name checked when discussing their least favorite tunes, it never made any of their tour set lists.
