It’s incredible how that ring represents a level of respect and symbolizes a strong bond with a family that frank has gained. It’s even more incredible when you think on how the movie opened and ends with frank in his final years of life still holding onto that ring that now is hollow and represents nothing but a fading memory of his friends Russ and Angelo and the once powerful group he was with since all of them are gone and that life he lived is over. That ring that once held all that weight and meaning now is hollow and meaningless and all frank is stuck with is his grief over jimmy and his failed connection with his daughter. How terrifying elderly age is especially when you have no one left and the life you lived means nothing now.

That's what you picture? You're not looking at the bigger picture then. The ring meant nothing of that sort. It was basically stating that "I am protecting you from the higher ups that want you dead, and if you don't want to die, you'll have to take Hoffa out of the pitcure." Why do you think he gave him the ring BEFORE telling him Jimmy has to go? To make him feel "important" enough that he had to choose which side he was gong to be in, even though he really doesn't have a choice in the matter. Yo either take Jimmy out, or you and him both go.

@@13Gangland there would be a lot of members and bosses that would be angered by a move like that from another boss. Giving a non-Italian a ring like that? The actors walking around in the Al Di La scene, it's like The Last Supper in a way like knowing this will be one of the last iconic scenes of the genre

It would’ve been nice if James Gandolfini and Frank Vincent were alive to be in this, but Daniel Day Lewis would’ve made this movie complete.

Scorcese does such an awesome job at portraying the Golden Age of the Mafia. Despite their brutal and violent actions these guys were the gatekeepers in the US in almost every facet of our society, and when they were on top they made the most of it. The sheer opulence, elegance, and directness that these guys operated above and below the table puts modern governments to shame. It makes it all the more bittersweet when in shows like The Sopranos, that showcase the modern Mafia, how far down from that standard the underworld fell, and what the unforgiving results were that this life entailed. These guys went from made man being prominent members of society to having their initiations take place in rundown basements for fear that they'd be picked up by the authorities.

That Scene reminds me of the Scene in Casino when Deniros Character is told to step down. Andy Stone is speaking with Ace and tells him :"The old man said, 'Maybe your friend should give in.' And when the old Man says 'maybe', that's like a papal bull. Not only should you quit, you should run!" That's maybe the Reason Aces Car blows up with Ace inside.
