Realist Brit here . Dear Jay, I follow your channel. Good stuff. But the problem with western 'experts' is that they keep on judging Russia's economy by western norms. Russia's statistics were only ever vaguely comparable with western ones in the 15 or so years from 2000 - 2014 in Russia's boom years, with western participation. Russia, like the old Soviet Union, can only be judged by its own internal norms. As for inflation, Argentina has always had massive inflation, but it's still there; ditto Turkey, whose inflation rate has been about 50% this year. No one is predicting their imminent collapse as a nation. But Russia is always different. a) Russia is now a totally authoritarian regime, so the regime can do what it likes and b) the Russians have always been in the grip of an authoritarian regime (except for about 30 years) , so they're just going back to the 'old' normal. Remember, hyperinflation in Germany in the 1920s LED to Hitler; it was not a result of Hitler. They put up with bread queues for 60 years in the Soviet Union; they're inured to suffering. Putin knows he can squeeze his people dry and get away with it, because today things are still far better than under the Soviet regime.

Thanks again Jason. I only wish the USA State Department paid attention the golden information that you articulate so well. Everyone needs to understand that the title here is four key words "Russia's Impending Economic Implosion" If you listen to the Russian Conscripts all talk of being in debt over their heads as the reason for become a "Contract" soldier. The Russian Government is already destroying its own reputation for the war in Ukraine by Failing to pay conscripts. In the medical world relatively highly paid medical professionals who join the Russian military don't get paid. So the reputation spreads, the government fails to pay its troops who die by the thousands. Russia's income relies upon Gas and Oil sales and as Ukraine keeps bombing their oil and gas, that income is going to drop and it could be the cause of the Ruble changing to 1000 to one US dollar or worse.

Steve Hanke is right. The inflation rate as stated by the government is wrong..- The inflation rate measured internally in Russia is low because of two big relevant facts.- It is measure by the Russian government and it is taken from internal prices alone and it does not take enough external prices into consideration. The increase of house rental costs is also interesting in that the population decrease in Russia through the war and other decreases in recent population trends would normally be a factor in a decrease in demand for rentals but it seems the reverse has happened which indicates other factors being involved in increased rental costs.

Forget oil, loans, money printing, even the collapse of the ruble. What brings down regimes is food. Russians are spending over 50% on food (compared to 10% in the US). People can do without cars, heat, even apartments but the cannot do without food.😊

I kinda disagree with that interest rate number at 52%. Once you have interest rates above 15% or so, you have already ground down borrowing to nearly nothing. At the current 19%, no businesses are borrowing money to expand, nobody is going in debt for future earnings. People who are starving to death, or can't heat their homes are still going to borrow no matter what the interest rates are. The difference between 19% interest rates and 52% interest rates is not nearly as much as you think it is when it comes to inflation. The correlation between interest rates and inflation is not a straight line, it plateaus once you get above 15%
