I'm Russian-American (grew up in Russia until 11 before being pulled to the US) The Foreign Agent Law scared me from the first time I heard about it... which, to be fair, was far too late. To be fair, I am Generation Putin so when the law was passed, I was only 13 years old and had no idea what politics even were. However, when I heard about the shit they were doing the first time, it sent me. The idea of my closest people left back home becoming targets of our deranged government is horrifying. The fact that it's only getting worse is also terrifying as a few of my friends back home are openly agains "the special military operation". I constantly think "what if they speak their opinion to the wrong person?" My heart breaks for my people, I just want to pull whom I can out, knowing that dragging them to the US also isn't the best option. However, at the moment, it's better than being under Putin's thumb... I genuinely want to thank you for putting pointing out how the two countries' Foreign Agent Laws are completely different. United States *does* have its own fucked up history of speech suppression, but I'm so sick of watching the Russian propaganda lie instead of talking the issues that are actually present. There is so much real shit to discuss, but they would rather make up bullshit to justify their means to an end. Fucking sickening.

Compared to how homogenous Russia is, it couldn't be any more different. Another Whataboutism: During WW1 and WW2 in some US State was forbidden to speak German in the public and to teach German, although German was the second most spoken language in the US at the time. Many German sounding names was renamed (voluntarily more or less), like "liberty steak" for "hamburger", because hamburger is associated with the german city Hamburg. It sounds radiculous, but germans was the "absolut enemy". Considering the russian government sees "the west" as absolute enemy, it is not surprising, banning everything which is associated with "the west".

So much was slowly building up, but since it was no urgent extreme point we mostly never saw it in our media. And yeah its a big difference how the same "law" is made in different countries. For us in germany for example RT lost its license only because they never paid their bills and broke other rules. It was never about what they aired but the fact they never even tried to play to the same rules as everyone else.

Straight up, Russia had a descent into Fascism while we all just weren't paying attention cause it didn't seem important. They fucking released a government made video about how The Jew(Trotsky) poisoned Russia through Communism and nobody even noticed. We assumed it was still an Oligarchy, where Putin was just a puppet of people with real power, and the only thing the people with real power wanted was more money. Whoops! Nope! Seems like it's an Autocracy with a leader convinced his destiny is to cleanse his country of nation-traitors and take back the land gifted to his nation by their natural superiority. I'd like to say we should've been paying more attention, but the US and Europe had a whole lot going on domestically at the time, and it's not like China wasn't taking its own path to craziness. Important People should've been paying more attention for sure, and it makes Russia's interference in US and European domestic politics *WAY* more upsetting, but I have a hard time looking back and thinking that it was impossible to ignore or overlook.

Those of us watching back then did see it. I got called a warmonger a lot for saying Russia isn't to be trusted. It was shamed as a cold war mindset. By 2014 I started really listening cause no one I knew seemed to notice or care about Ukraine. Just brushed it off. I've been interested in Russia since I first read about the cold war in the 90s and China since 2015 and the pattern is the same: people ignore it and are shocked when the quiet part finally becomes loud. But no one will let you talk about such things. You're called a warhawk. A militarist. You're told to stop drinking the kool aid. So no one talks until it becomes mainstream.

@@ki3657 Well I was somewhat in the the middle. But I was not watching the inside of Russia and therefore did not belive in an open war until it was to late. Thats why I said I should have looked into russian law earlier, but I guess that was a bit of trained blindness toward Russia since I was born in the GDR and here we often look more criticly towards US politics than towards Russia, wich is a problem that needs to be changed. Its good to have an open eye and mind on all politics no matter wich country.

In russia however, you can’t go openly about saying you support Ukraine, you can’t even wear yellow and blue outfits that match the Ukranian flag. This is why the west offer more freedom than russia does.
