I never feel postrock/postmetal is "depressing", an interpretation you use quite often. Dark for sure, but much more subtle, more nuanced than depression. I feel lifted up by most of it I like. Depressing seems more like someone who dislikes the genre would call it, or to outsiders of the genre to make them understand in their very limited vocabulary/taste/musical development.

At first I was surprised to see you were going to cover Russian Circles on the channel. I've liked them for a while (although i feel like I must have missed some of their albums in the last few years), but somehow, never thought of them as metal, even though I knew they could get pretty heavy at times. But you're right I guess -- maybe there's not a huge difference between them and, say, pelican ... and it sounds like th is album is much heavier than some of their past stuff like Enter, anyway. I'm looking forward to checking this out. personally, I love instrumental music and always have -- it's what I grew up with and always seemed more "natural" to me than vocally oriented music. Of course I like a good singer as mucha s anybody, but have always felt especially at home when people just shut up and play. BTW, I never thought that vocals created teh emotional connection with music -- they add ego to music. That's sometimes exactly what you want -- but sometimes it just isn't.
@thrallsofmetal
2 жыл бұрын
Necrotic Nick- Actually, we did cover Blood Year when it dropped a few years ago. They've always been more metal adjacent than flat out metal in my mind... until this one. I think this is a legit metal album this time. I think this band constructs songs and layers melodies in away that vocals wouldn't fit anyway which is something I really like. I do think vocals create an emotional connection in the sense that words/ lyrics may relate to people on a different level than the music itself. There's definitely ego present but I do love the connection you can get with really relatable lyrics and a solid delivery.
@DamnableReverend

@@thrallsofmetal I hear you. For me, vocals are just another instrument. A lot of the time I could do without them. But a great vocalist is a great instrumentalist, just like a great guitarist or drummer, and I appreciate that. I also get more into lyrics if I listen to an album a lot and like it already, but usually only after many listens. Anyway I listened to the album and it's great, and yes, it certainly has some really heavy parts and seems designed to be played LOUD! The drums sounds great, indeed.

@@thrallsofmetal Listened to it twice now and yeah "Gnosis" is pretty metal. Russian Circles has always been a heavier post rock band or post rock/post metal, mostly because of the bass player, the bass tone is usually fairly heavy, and the drums, but "Gnosis" is at another level (metal wise). Another great heavy post rock or post rock/post metal band, Hegy (Hungary) "We Won't Make it Home". Track #2 Hydra. Hegy, similar to Russian Circles, has a great drummer.
