This seems pretty spot on. I come from Eastern Europe and school is everything when you're young. Much like China. Your grades and tests dictate your opportunities. Everything is free and you can apply to any college, but your grades and demand is what allow you to have your pick. Also education is thought of as extremely important. Both teachers and parents would kick your ass if you tried skipping. The cool kids of the class were always the ones with the highest grades, not the funniest ones.

That's a crucial difference between the east and the west. I grew up in "capitalist" Europe, and the cool kids were sitting in the back of the class, only chiming in to make jokes. School was just a place for hanging out with friends, and probably half of all boys studied the bare minimum, just enough to get passing grades.

Same as my country Saudi Arabia, but the education system in my country changes every year which makes it difficult for us. For universities, the education is free, and the goverment give students money each month and depending in their majors the amount of money will be determined.

I grew up in post-Soviet Union in Kyrgyzstan. Most of my teachers were taught in the USSR. And thank God for that. We had intern teachers who tried to teach us, but we simply heckled them until they blushed, and ceased, and desisted. But those who got Soviet education put us right into our proper place as elementary students. I hated and rebelled against their "tyranny" as a student, but now, after many decades have passed, I remember my elementary school teachers with reverence. They knew what was important, and they taught us important values. After immigrating to the West, I still remember the names of my primary school teachers to this day. Some of them may not be alive, but the amount of education that they brought me is worth more than gold.

To be bamboozled by this so obviously constantly lying, ignorant, incompetent, antidemocratic, science-denying psychopathic wannabe dictator in itself is very telling of the mental and educational state of large swathes of the US population - and its not flattering. And now Republikkkans do everything to extend the ignorance of many Americans by fighting hard to keep the real, honest history out of schools, instead indoctrinate them with a whitewashed version of history of an America that like that has never existed, and to eliminate any critical thinking. THAT is an “anti-American agenda” , not my just plain facts further above. It makes sheep out of those who only get a basic education, and if you don’t learn about the real past, you’re bound to make the same mistakes again, because you’re unable to learn FROM the past. You don’t value what you have, hail the wrong “leaders” - dare I say Führer- and will only be able to appreciate democracy after you’ll have lost it. The US is in a downward spiral towards authoritarianism/fascism and too many are cheering this on with chants of “U.S.A., U.S.A., U.S.A.”, “America first”, and “America is the greatest country in the world” (soooo laughable), while demonising all those who want to make their lives ACTUALLY better and want to save the planet. There's not much you can disagree with, in terms of his words. I think the biggest issue is the relevance of getting a good education, in a particular society. For decades after its independence, India had a superb system of free, advanced education. Unfortunately, it also had a socialist economy that couldn't provide jobs for its best and brightest...to say nothing of the average working-class Indian. The result was a brain drain that persisted for 50 years until India reformed its economy. OR, you can take the example of the last 70 years in the U.S., which has witnessed a vast increase in the numbers of college graduates and a corresponding decline in the blue-collar manufacturing sector. Today, despite the constant right-wing whining the U.S. is not attractive for most advanced manufacturing due to the lack of skilled workers. It all goes to show that what is valuable today may not be tomorrow...and vice-versa.

@MichaelMcKenna-pl9pw Funny that you ask. The other day I ran online into a discussion of a document, allegedly produced in the West, that was drawing different conclusions from comparing the educational systems in Russian favor in 1959. I confirmed that the translator existed and was a cultural attaché to Russia. With the space race heating up, the interest to a system that not only had educated almost 100% of many millions within 30 years, but had produced incredible results from illiterate or low literate people. Find a biopic on Kalashnikov, the creator of AK-47, to see what I mean. The support from the top colleagues was crucial, especially in the space race, where those highly and thoroughly educated under the tsarist regime were great in promoting factory workers into the equivalents of the CEOs of huge public companies with many thousands of people working for them. Talent identificantion from very young age, in all areas - science, sports, arts, you name it, and support for it was key. Not a perfect strategy, with a side effect like the man in this video had said - was not letting people find out what they wanted for themselves enough in all cases. Like China, I'd imagine. But having a talented kid, and having no money for his extracurriculars to pursue competitions will be hindering the US the wider the income inequality becomes.

I taught in the late Soviet Union. The discipline in the classrooms was draconian. Teachers were Demi gods. Pupils obeyed. Only the top few percent of students could advance to higher education after merit based exams. The rest were funneled off to trade or middle grade office employment. Communist ideology permeated all subjects like progressive social justice ideology does in the US. Except, the Soviet kids knew their math, science and language skills. There was no pervasive frivolous pop entertainment to amuse the people. What was done was high culture stuff. Great concerts. Literary classics. Choirs. Boring as heck propaganda documentaries about agriculture harvests. Though at the very end under glasnost a veritable blooming of culture took place. Everyone read for leisure though. They had virtually a brainwashed view of the west and of history in general. As we see now with Putin shutting off virtually all western media and claiming that German Nazis have overrun Ukraine. No one at all would talk to me about what happened to their family under Stalin other than a few diehards who thought he was a saint. The kids were extremely interested in Western pop music and teen culture (which I should have brushed up on). Michael Jackson was an enormous fascination. I have no idea how they even heard of him given that western music was virtually banned. Learned all about the 'black market'. Their morals were very conservative even prudish. No entertainment had sex scenes. Non married people would not be allowed to share hotel rooms. (I learned about this when I was there after the fall when they were happy that shacking up would be permitted). I kept journals when I was there. I should probably write them up.

This comparison is very important. I really went through the Bulgarian education system for middle schools, and then the army for two years, it was just the Democratic change in 1989 starting. Then I went to the MEI - Machine Electromechanical Institute, started in 1945 near by the then smaller city of Sofia, (today it stands in the heart of one of our capital city's largest neighbourhoods - Students' City! My first year of studies there started with very strict professionals as of Autumn semester 1992. I studied Computer systems and technology. While I studied there for 4 years, I also learnt English, and I already knew Russian... And studied things, which were very new at the time. Then I was brave and young, and maybe even foolish enough to decide on a really heroic thing for the day and place... And I went and studied from scratch everything about western computer systems at the American University in Bulgaria, Blagoevgrad. This was very reasonable although it may seem very funny to someone, as a decision, if it were taken right now. Truth is - this was a colossal encounter for me, and even though they had modern PCSs at my Bulgarian technical university, it was not until I saw how the American and other systems work, that I realised truly, that a new age of information technology is starting. Practically, PSs at the time even in the west were still systems, rather "unaware" for what really came later, with Google Toolbar, for which some of my students in 2005 were writing plug-ins! 😃 What about Wikipedia, we built that from scratch! I now know I have had unique chances. And if I were not so young and full of energy back then, I would have never been able to study my major twice, once in my mother tongue, that Bulgarian is and twice - in English. So, this made me who I am today as well. I firmly believe, that education systems should cooperate, live together, exchange students, share matters and materials. Otherwise there can not be any progress on Earth. And I know, this may sound to some too confident... But for some, at least stable period of two decades after the Fall of the Berlin Wall, we had this amazing confidence, this belief, which came from experience. Today many at home call me Americanofile, or something of this sort. But I keep my chin up and try to teach the young what time it was! 1989, the time, when we all felt, that new times are coming 🗽🌌🎠🎡🎢⭐🌟🌞 Greetings to all from Bulgaria, and keep your chins up!

What is the quality of US schools? It depends. It's all over the place. Depends on what you're talking about. At the high end, nothing tops the upper crust of US universities. Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Cal Tech, Carnegie Mellon…who can top those? But for the great mass of US students, especially up through high school, but a lot at the college level as well, it's pretty horrid. I'm so far from it, in time and in other ways, I couldn't tell you how it is now. I thought public education was pretty horrid at age 13. But from a lot of what I hear, it's much worse now in a lot of places. At least when I was that age, guns and drugs were not a concern on everyone's mind. I generally walked to school from age 10 up through high school. There were a few days I did not feel safe! But only a very few. Part of the problem with my school, at that age, was that we had one or two Catholic schools, and a Lutheran school. The public school got everything else. A lot of us were just animals, at least the boys. Come the 9th grade, the Catholic and Lutheran kids topped out their schools' curriculum, and they had to fold into the public school. And things suddenly got a LOT more civilized. I felt like studying again. But for a while there, it really was like a blackboard jungle. And I can tell you something else. In the 7th and 8th grades, we had about 5 male teachers, and two female. The women were the ones who had all the problems. The year of the 8th grade, neither of those women made it intact through the full year. But the men had almost a magical ability to maintain discipline. I never thought about it at the time, but it would be so great to go back and talk to those guys now. It was something to behold. They didn't have to yell and punish. You just knew to respect them. Well, there was PE. Yelling. Even paddling in some cases. But that was a special case. Let's just say I don't miss one microsecond of those times. Somehow I got through those years with no physical injury. Well, there was that time coming back from a basketball game, on a bus, on a Friday night, and it was so cold I had to run back home to keep from freezing literally to death, and all my toes were frostbit. That was a physical injury. But different. Like I said, I don't miss those days. G'night all…

What is learning two foreign languages other than "cramming ur brain" with stuff you won't need anyway? I've had 4 foreign languages in school. The only one that I found useful back then as today is Latin, a dead language. French I never use, English I've learned better from the TV and Spanish is so simple I have seen from others, you can learn it during a two week vacation in Latin America.

Truth! I was a public high school teacher and was very thankful that I was able to retire in 2018. I taught in a suburban high school in the Chicago area but the majority of our students came from disadvantaged homes … only the mom and not the dad in the house. We had gang problems and numerous fights in our school yet the administration always pushed their idiotic, mandated tests while the bigger issues were conveniently ignored. The Department of Education, our superintendent and school board members took all the joy out of teaching because they refused to allow us to discipline the students. Our school was big on “Restorative Justice.” 😔 We don’t need a Department of Education! We don’t need superintendents and their entourage! We don’t need school boards! Those type of people and agencies just suck the life out of real learning and replace it with their own agenda as is becoming more and more evident for those who have eyes to see and ears to hear. All children can learn but children who come from a home with two loving parents who are not afraid to discipline them and teach them to love God always have a distinct advantage over those who come from a broken home. Sadly, many parents don’t want to train up their children anymore and that has empowered those who see schools as a way to brainwash and control the next generation. It’s really sad for me to see how quickly our country is being demolished from the inside. I did speak up at school board meetings and did my best to warn both parents and people in our community but evil is so entrenched now in our society that this will not end well for the future of our once great nation. Well, I continue to rely on Jesus and not the “experts” of this world. ~ Proverbs 22:6 ~ John 3:16 ❤️🙏

The real shocker to this film, after you realize it's correct in it's evaluation of US students being behind Russian students in late 1950's education, is that that gap has widened over the years, despite all the money the US has poured into our terrible public school system. In 1958 Russia was leading us in education, but today, our students are graduating so far behind, we can't even be seen in Russias rear view mirror at this point! Statistics are tricky. And they can be easily manipulated to show what is desired to be shown. And while statistics may show us currently near Russias level, the truth os the matter is we're not. In fact, I was recently reading an article, (I wish I had the link but don't at the moment) and this article talked about the fact that colleges all across the US, have had to add remedial English and basic math courses to their curriculum because such a high percentage of high school graduates accepted and starting college, were unable to even read at a 10th grade level, and could not read the text books upon arrival. And this is a nationwide thing, not just at one college. College freshman now have to pass this 9th or 10th grade English class to proceed with studies at the college. They also said the problem has made itself evident, when they found new arrivals, one after another, could NOT read, understand and fill out relatively simple paperwork upon admission. They needed assistance from college staff if their parents to fill out these standard forms. While it's been quite obvious to many people, and I'd say especially obvious to older people of my generation just how dumbed down we've become as a nation, I still have to say despite knowing this was the case, reading that article really sent it home and set me back a bit to say the least. We've got politicians and beaurocrats telling us how many 100's of millions of dollars their dumping into education all the time, yet it seems things NEVER get any better!! Unless I guess you feel "Drag-Q" story hour for our 6 year olds in a step forward in providing children with a good solid foundation to grow on. BTW, How much are those mis-fits being paid to warp our babies minds? I mean, where does all that money go? Just higher pay for incompetent teachers? Yes, there's a few good teachers still left out there, but their weeding them out as fast as possible. Because if any teacher isn't "Woke" yet, you can bet the twisted, leftist, anti-God, school board is pushing hard for their resignation.

American schools are still pretty bad, their universities are just very good now. Sadly russia doesn't care much about universities, they only have 1 university that can compete with the global top 100. For a population as big as russia this is terrible, you always have to think about the future and oil and gas aren't the future of energy supply. If we think about the breakthroughs we had in nuclear fusion energy in the past 6 months it's getting more and more evident that it will replace our current supply.

@@DrScarface74 Well how many international medals do they have, and in which fields? I'd like to know which realiable source you're refering to here. The reason almost no russian university is a top 100 university is very simple, they don't invest in scientific research as much as others do. They kind of miss the purpose of universities because that's what they are made for, development. America is so far ahead in microchip development because they invest in scientific research, not because they teach their students what the world already knows anyway.

David, I sure do hope that your films are going to be collected and available in the National Archives, or at least in the research library(ies) at University level. These are important films, and a lot of them work as smaller collections covering various, relevant topics. This is especially true regarding the Vietnam pieces, race - both civil rights and a spotlight on black culture that are compelling and historically important. I have touched on it before, and it can’t be said enough. Your work is socially and historically valuable. As always thank you for making it available here on KZitem.
