1) making "a bunch" of atomic boms takes a lot of time. You should get U238 on special plants or Pu239(240) in nuclear reactors. Both produce a little per, let's say, month. 2) Tupolev Tu-4, the Soviet copy of B-29, makes its first flight in May 1947. 3) The first test of an atomic bomb in USSR happened in Aug 1949. 4) Soviet jet fighter MiG-15 maked its first flight in Dec 1947. Later in Korea War it showed it's superiority over F-86. For defence you can easily use those despite short range.

Looks like a derivative of the V-2 tank diesel which started life in the early 1930s. Depending on what machine these are used the actual horsepower is anywhere between 330 (de-forced, heavy artillery tractors like AT-T where endurance and torque matter most) to 500-580 (JS-2, Т-55АМ) with NO superchargers. They were also used on railroad - various locomotives, small ships, etc. As someone pointed earlier on this might be a civil version - 1D12.

@1100HondaCB Thats where any engine gets its balance. The flywheel provides inertia to keep pace between the power strokes, but a V12 has so many of them per revolution that it runs smooth anyway.

On the other hand, US Air Force counted air victory based on Gun Camera Data + witnesses only. Besides, the Gun Camera mostly can register only the fact of the hit in enemy plane. It happened that several MiG-15 landed with more than 100 bullet holes. The F-86's 6х .50 machine guns were definitely not enough.

If it were it wouldnt run for 60 years, now would it? Thats for sure. And the smoke is designed on purpose. It was a smoke screen for their T34 tanks. They would burn oil on purpose which would hide the tank.

@scottduncan44

The Soviet V-12 Diesal ( arguably) the best armored vehicle engine of the second WW. The combat ability of an armored force is not a direct function of a one on one match up between tanks. The Soviet use of one standard engine and one standard gun on their two main battle tanks the T-34 and KV simplified repair and maintenence. Even the U.S. was unable to produce one engine in sufficent quantity for all its M-4's. The German's had a multiplicity of Chassis, engines and tracks to maintain.

So called "real" V12 engines do only have one crankshaft. Meaning that the both cylinder banks use the same crank, like this soviet V12 does too. Regards: a guy from Finland who also was a tank mechanic in army. Just working with soviet straight-6 engines not V12s :).

@scottduncan44 I agree with you on the V2 being the best tank engine. But in regards to the M4 engines, the top two in my opinion was the Ford GAA and the twined Detroid Diesels. But it was down to each factory which engine they used. Of course Chrysler went with the radials and multibanks. Multibanks because they used common truck parts. Mechanically the GAA was the best with the twin overhead cam system and its high power/weight compared to the Multibank.

@tpvalley nothing specific, but it seems to be leaking oil excessively. I know they all leak some, but this seems to be blowing out more than it should around one of the head gaskets. Oh yeah. 10-1)) Even eng wiki mentions different reports of UN battle losses. For example, just compare official airplane losses with the US Rescue Service reports (over 1000 pilots were rescued+20-30% were killed, the average amount+over 260 captured). What happened with all those pilots ? Suddenly jumped out of the plane ? 51 Soviet pilot became an Ace on that War. It means every one shot down 5 and more enemy planes. The best ones Sutyagin N. and Pepelyaev E. shot down 22 and 19 enemy planes
@IaHulg

by the way, if those p-51s was so "best", how can you explain the fact when 22 Apr 1945 alone Ivan Kogedub (Иван Кожедуб) using LA-7 shot down 2 P-51s US Air Force. The US pilots mistook him for a German. Only one of those 2 idiots survived, the second's "best plane" P-51 exploded in the air.

Sutyagin alone shot down 15 F-86s. By the way, to get air victory counted in Soviet Air Force, you need to get plane crash confirmed from ground forces (special group must get some parts of the enemy plane)+witnesses+Gun camera data. Numerous cases when enemy plane crashed in sea or exploded in air with parts widely spread out are not counted.

Design of this engine wasn't direct source. Fuel system was copied from the Bosch, but the lack of Russian technology in the 1930's forced to use relatively old technologies to make an engine. Diesel initially was designed as airplane engine, but was rejected by customer due to lack of initial requirements. Then, engineers started to adopt an initial design to use as a tank engine.

5) The latest non-jet russian fighters Yak-3, La-7, La-9 and La-11 could easily deal with heavier P-47/P-51s. In fact, any other long-range escort fighter has worse maneuverability. By the way, USSR got 196 P-47s (Lend Lease). The only interesting part on it was turbocarger. 6) New Is-3 and T-54(55) tanks+huge number of previous Is-2+T-34-85 could easily roll through all the Europe quite quickly in case of new War. So, the only option left for USA is to use the North Pole route for the bombers.

Patton wanted to attack soviet union, but he would have been for a nasty shock. fortunately this never happened.

None, it was an all new design. As a matter of fact the lessons learned from the T34's the German army encountered (the sloped armor for instance and wide tracks) resulted in the Panther (which was a medium tank designed to counter the T34). What's next. Did Sergei Korolev steal the German rocket secrets by having a fully independent program in the 1930's, through courtesy of a time machine which took him to the 40's? Wasn't the Springfield rifle "stolen" from the Mauser btw??
