You really should watch project farms video on this stuff. He try's both examples against each other, along with a few other products. It works really well if you wire off all loose debris and stuff and given 12-24 hours to sit. Clean thouroughly with water, dry, and use vinegar to neutralize the acid as prep after rinsing. Water will rinse it, but not neutralize its remnants. Naval jelly works great if given far more time than the directions indicate, and it works best (along with most of the other products) if covered by paper towel, plastic bags, ect. To keep the product out of light and help prevent any evaporation from the product. Muriatic Acid is awesome, but take caution-if left on too long it will start to eat away at the good metal too. Definitely check out project farms video if you really want to get down to the nitty gritty on this topic. I think you'll like it. With best regards~

So do you put the baking soda before or after you put the part in?
@CannaCJ
3 жыл бұрын
@@backyardrestorations you throw the powder on splashed acid, or use a mix of warm water and baking soda. To neutralize an acid bath you put baking soda in after you have finished using it and before disposing of it. Doing so will render the acid inert, so use it only when you are done using the acid. Rinse parts in a baking soda/water solution then rinse with water for best results and “safest safety”.

You are using it wrong. The gel turns iron oxide (rust) in iron phosphate which dissolves in water whereas iron oxide does not. Need to thoroughly wash the part with water. That will carry the now iron phosphate away.

For small parts and tools, submerge in vinegar (@$2.50 a gal) for days, rinse and scrub in water, then dunk in soda water. For panels and welds, sand, wire brush and spray with a rust converter, like Permatex or Marhyde (3M). It turns black.Then primer.

I have used the stuff, it works great. 1. remove flaking rust with a wire brush of some sort. Don't go down to bare metal. 2. apply naval jelly, liberally 3. let sit for 30 minutes. (directions say 5-10) 4. wash off with water. 5. repeat if necessary

I prefer Metal Rescue for smaller oblects, for things that can fit in 5 gal bucket. It's kind of expensive about $33 per gallon. It's non-toxic and non corrosive just throw the parts in ,come back the next day and you're usually done. It can even unstick a rusty frozen engine. It may take a week or so, but worked for me with 1 cylinder rusted up. I plan on using it again this fall to clean up the water jacket on my 396

Many years back when I lived in an apt. And had no garage I used naval jelly for my chevelles floor shifter base. I used wire wheel for heavy rust, finished off with naval jelly, i had more time on my hands then. I believe it did leave a protective layer, zinc maybe? But now all grown up, I'd say sand blast it! In a cabinet, or stand alone, can't beat the blaster.

Hello, The muriatic acid is in another league from any naval jelly product. It will remove rust down to the bare steel, but needs adequate ventilation, as the fumes are not pleasant. Muriatic acid will also remove hard water deposits in an engine block that was run without antifreeze, as well as water lines. It dissolves the calcium and iron down to the original surface. I was quite surprised at the poor results of the naval jelly. I had expected something better. You presented the products in a nice format. I found your video interesting and educational after forty years of using muriatic.
@Mr._Lister_The_Sister_Phister

The Naval Jelly certainly wasn't very impressive, although it definitely did remove some rust, as evidenced by the pitting on the metal becoming more visible. Personally, I've tried just about every rust-removal product/DIY method under the sun EXCEPT the 2 in this video. The muriatic acid definitely had above-average results. However, out of them all, I've found electrolysis to be the most effective method for me. It's very easy to set up, there's a ton of videos covering small-scale electrolysis. I was initially discouraged because the videos all seemed to suggest that an older car battery charger was mandatory. It's not. I made a set-up out of a basic AC adapter that I use daily with spectacular results. Washing soda is also specified in most instances, so just as an FYI I wanted to note that you can make washing soda out of baking soda; just pour some on a cookie sheet and bake it at 200°F for ~an hour, mixing it up every 15 min, and it will turn into washing soda. You can even use this method indoors, but be aware that if you use washing soda as your electrolyte, hydrogen gas will be released so use it in a well-ventilated area.
