I didn't think there was much restoration that could be done to a hand mirror. looks like i was wrong. On another note, it seems like a lot of people in the comments are professionals at guessing exactly how the maker wanted this mirror to look 70 years ago to be claiming how he absolutely ruined the design by removing the "intentional" dirt and grime.
@TysyTube

@Rob88

The "dirt" or "antiquing" is most likely "Liver of Sulfur" as it is too even and uniform to be natural collected grime. The purpose wasn't to make the piece look antique but to emphasize the intricate details which are lost if the whole piece is polished. Come on people, think. Btw. I don't care what he did to it, if your going to criticize commenters, get your info in order first. The idea of antiquing is because liver of sulfur was traditionally applied to what are NOW antiques when they were NEW.

You do know that engravers darken the background to make the design stand out more right? They did it 70 years ago and they still do it now. It's not a matter of guessing how they would've wanted it to look like... I don't mind the way he restored it but at least know what you're talking about before criticizing people who probably knew the reason behind the so called grime in the crevices

People collecting brass objects in the old days didn't care about patina, they even cleaned the object when a certain type of wind would corrode the brass in order to keep it always shiny. It's a recent trend to keep the patina of metal objects, you should know it g-pa.

In metalwork like this, with 3D figuring, black was added intentionally to give the shapes more definition. To finish this properly, you should get a product called "black wax" and treat the handle with it; wipe off the excess so it stays in the depressions. It will have the bonus side effect of helping resist tarnishing. That said, to resist tarnish further, you should let the black wax cure, and then spray the brass surfaces with a clear lacquer, to prevent oxygen from getting to the brass.

the oldest date for this mirror would be 1950's but more than likely late 1960's early 1970's. three reasons it not turn of 20th century. 1 double sided mirror and one of them being beveled to magnify. this one is to precise and is industrially made. these didn't start to be mass produced until 1920's. second if this was turn of the century the mineral use to cushion the mirrors and the handle from would not have been corrugated cardboard. pre 1900's would have used soft wood, cork, or felt. three the metal itself is a pressed or stamped metal process not common before 1920's. these type of mirror were often sold in set with accompanying brush made to look the same as the mirror. it also included a comb and some type of hair clip. Usually sold in 5 and 10 cent stores.

Great restoration only two points. One that wire bruch was too much i think even the emery cloth, if its not too skracht. From the video it looks you was gentle. Second is just opinion. I think when it was new, it has patina. Gives the piece a bit depth. From the build it looks like 1950-1960 era (cardboard ,spot welding ,threaded rod ) but it emulate late 18 erly 19st. It cant be older that 1890 but it mass produce look not older that 1920. Found some references with this type of build from 1940. But the back magnifying mirror is not original. I think someone replaced the damage back picture with modern mirror and use it in bath. Because it dont have the back picture its harder to pin point era. This mirror was used in bedroom or in dressing room on makeup table (dressing/vanity table). In this state it value is around 10usd.

Again this mirror was over restored. The filigree design on the handle was meant to have dark recesses to make the polished raised areas pop visually. To do all that work and not even coat the brass with lacquer to prevent it from tarnishing is a mystery to me. Those who love antiques are attracted to old finishes and patina. Less is more!

Hey, super.. Well done and keep up With this.
