Very nice to here a good spoken british english as a german. Our rear axle from our Fiat Panda 169 has been chanced in 02/2022 because of a broken weldseam. So the wheel was askew. Respect for your work without lifting ramp.

This got my interest as the wife has 2013 ford KA and knowing that the rear beam axle is a bit of a rust trap I watched with great interest. I must say this is brilliant and methodical video on how to do the repair and including most of the problems that may be encountered. Very well explained and pretty well filmed, I would say about the best video on how to do this repair. Thank you for sharing.

Hi thanks for the very informative video, my daughters 2011 fiat 500 has just about passed the mot, the tester luckily a friend said it should have failed on the rear axle and to replace it immediately. It has advisories for rear axle, rear springs, exhaust and front brake discs, they all need changing, im guessing her 500 will be almost identical job on the rear axle ? The tester doesn't have time to take on the job and a different garage want over £1000 to supply parts and replace it all so looks like im doing it. Could you kindly tell me, would i only need to replace the rear metal brake lines or were there other parts that needed replacing due to the stuck unions and corroded nuts ? I watched the videos but couldn't tell if you replaced more than just the metal pipes on the brake lines, ill be sure to get those annoying clips for the hand brake cable before i start too. Thanks again

Hello and thank you. I’m glad the video has been useful. There may be minor differences and in addition, some vehicles also have an anti-roll bar passing through the axle beam. In terms of brake pipes, it’s definitely worth checking the metal pipes that run from the front to the rear brake hoses. If they are corroded or seized at the back, then it is impossible to replace the rear flexi hoses without destroying those pipes - something to consider. Also worth checking the brackets between the axle beam and floor - the handbrake cable brackets are part of these and if really corroded you might need these too. The front to rear brake pipes and flexi hoses also join through a bracket here. Worth getting all the bolts and fixings as these corrode too.

Good job, very clearly explained and filmed, but I can't but help feel the exterior of the brake back plates and the front underfloor mounting brackets for the front of the trailing arm should have been de-rusted and repainted as well if only with smooth black Hammerite to do a really good job. Seemed to be a false economy with the rear axle removed not to do this. If they are too corroded they could also be an MOT failure especially the front trailing arm brackets attached to the underside of the floor. I realise it was some one else's car but even so, I would have urged them for me to do this. I need to do the same on a Ford Ka Mk1 '07 which I inherited from my Dad which has only covered 7k miles. The rest of the car is still pretty good corrosion free, but the rear beam has strangely become badly corroded. Must be Ford's crap rust proofing. I would never buy a Ford. I am going to remove the rear beam, have it blasted and maybe repainted or I shall repaint it with smooth black Hammerite several coats and then refit. Your video is pretty helpful although it is a fairly straight forward job. The Ford Ka Mk 1 has shocks and springs together as in a McPherson strut so much easier to deal with than a separate shock and spring set up which looks to be a right PITA. Many thanks for making your two videos on this.

@@alexmorgan3435 Hello and thank you for the feedback! Yep in an ideal world I could have gone further but ultimately I was guided by the owner who provided all the parts and also the time factor due to working long hours in my day job. It’s always a bit of a juggling act, making videos on my days off. Very best of luck with your car. Rear axle beams can rust terribly and I’ve even seen them come apart, so unless corrosion is very surface in nature, it’s best to replace. I’m with you on the lack of rust proofing on Fords. They never learn and I’m not a fan.

It’s a long time ago now so can’t remember! If it was possible to get a socket on there then I would have torqued them. If only ring spanners then possibly not.

Hello, thanks for your insightful video. I will do this the next days on a Ford KA RU8 and it's really the same structure. I kept wondering the last days whether the whole thing would work with jackstands or whether I need a lifting platform. Now I know it. Thanks again. But can you say me were you have bought the screws? I can't find anything on the internet. Thanks for your answer.

Thank you for your videos, I love them, very educational! Is it similar in the A3 you've got? I've got the same version too and it's very corroded but I'm not sure if it's something I can do in my driveway. Thanks!

Glad you enjoy - thank you. The A3 has a very different set up - there is not a ‘single piece’ axle beam as on the Panda but instead a number of components making up the rear suspension. I know my rear suspension lower arms have corrosion on my A3. My MOT is due at the end of the year and if necessary I can replace them. They are not overly expensive. Oftentimes the corrosion can just be unsightly though and not a structural concern. If I need to change them, there’ll be a video!
@josemgp644

Thanks for your answer! Talking about the lower suspension arms, I tried to replace them last year, however the main issue is with the eccentric bolt, it is usually siezed in the bushing and the only way (you might find another way😂) is to cut the arm with a circular saw, it happened to me and had to take the car to a garage. If you make a video of it, I'llk be very keen on watching it!

I have one more question. Did you have the track set or do you have a special method here? Or is that not necessary at all since you can't install the axle carrier crooked?
@autoknight747

My research suggested that rear wheel alignment is not adjustable. There was however movement in terms of tightening rear axle beam bracket to the vehicle, which made me doubt that. I aimed to refit in the same position, based on bolt marks but nonetheless advised the owner to take the car for a full wheel alignment check as a precaution. Outcome is unknown.

Similar. You will likely have an anti-roll bar (sway bar) built in to the axle beam on the 500.

Very good instructional vid. However, it's worth pointing out, that using air from a tyre to create the pressure to replace brake fluid, is NOT a good idea, as air in the tyre has water vapour in it. And this will defo rust the brake pipes.
@autoknight747

Thank you! That’s a very theoretical. I have a wheel and tyre that I keep especially for this purpose and is inflated with a foot pump. I have used this method outside of the workshop environment since the 90s with no issues. Have you seen how much water gets periodically drained off from a dealer workshop compressor? I was always surprised at the quantity!

Having watched both videos, there's no way I would expect any novice to do this on their driveway. The level of corrosion is really quite shocking, it's a pity that cars aren't made to last by design. We need to get away from a throw away society. I came looking for a video on how to replace a set of reversing sensors on a Panda and that turned out to be ridiculously complicated for what it actually was.. 15 fasteners of various designs just to hold on a plastic bumper and 4 of them hidden so well as to make it a garage booking instead of a DIY. The job should be so easy and yet...

The corrosion was not good although in its defence, the car is 14 years old. Having worked with various German brands over the years, it is very clear to me that these little Fiats are definitely built to a budget.
