Yes, I already know exactly the 5er I want. With that being said... we have never had the slightest of problem. I'm still not sure what caused it, but it was content while in FL. I think the wind was pushing the trailer as we were heading west so it was going faster than the truck.

Hey, great videos. I've been towing for 30yrs, from semis to utility trailers and everything in between. Adjust your air pressure in the trailer tires, the rear axle tires to manufactures specs and front axle tires 3 to 5 pounds less air pressure. This will put more side to side drag on the front tires and reduce sway. This will also shift weight to rear axle, thus giving you a longer wheel base for better ride and handling. Good luck and Merry Christmas.
@KeepYourDaydream
7 жыл бұрын
That's a great point. Actually, we did consider that thinking about tire pressure later. I now adjust the tires to 77 so the ride hot at 80. I think they were riding at 83-85 which makes them thinner. Great point! I wish I would have remembered to put that in the annotations.

Awesome. Good to hear from you. A first I think. Lagoon 620. Yeah, that'll do. Our dream boat is a Nordhavn, but we got tired of dreaming and decided someday would happen faster if we started now with what we can do... which was a travel trailer. I think we were right... everything is happening faster now. There will be many boats before the Nordy. Who knows. We might not even want one by the time we can get one! That's the best part of taking action. July will be here before you know it. We just might be near Oregon in July. Where are you going? Sounds like you handled the sway issue with grace! I had a travel trailer similar size as yours and in wind at the right direction it made the truck feel like we were skating. It looks like the Florida Tourism Board sponsored this video .... very visually appealing :-) We've pulled 3 different travel trailers coast to coast and only encountered what you did one time along the coast in Louisiana during a severe thunderstorm. We compensated by pulling off at the next off ramp and spending the night in a hotel :-) It's very important to have close to as possible, 15% of the trailer weight sitting on the hitch ball. This can be accomplished by load distribution and also by lowering the ball on the truck. Cranking more friction into the sway control would help I would think also. I love that you aren't afraid to show the little brain farts you have (like we all do) when it comes to checking all the connection distances. You guys are just having too much fun :-)
@KeepYourDaydream
7 жыл бұрын
That's a great point. I think I'm over 15% and when this occurred we had almost full fresh water. I think that contributed. Once the water was gone, it didn't happen again. Yet, I like having at least 1/3 water as we boondock a lot. I'll look for other weighs to compensate for the weight. Need another truck scale and weight it right with all 3 pads. Thanks for the comment.

@KeepYourDaydream
7 жыл бұрын
Don't be nervous about it. Out of 17k miles, this only happened once. And it's even less common in 5th wheels - more common on travel trailers. I think it was related to FL cross wind and my fresh water tank was practically full putting more tongue weigh on the truck. When we emptied the water and tightened the sway bar - the sway never came back. But being cautious is alway good. Either speeding up or applying trailer break from the cab is the way to quickly solve it.

Too much weight on the rear of a trailer is the worse. 30 some yrs ago in my teen years I convinced my brother that we did not need to carry bags of feed to the front of the trailer. Needless to say a few miles down the road the trailer started whipping and by time we came to a stop we were facing the opposite direction and had a bent hitch on a very heavy trailer. Too much weight on the tongue would cause more steering problems and in wind any weight on the lower part of the trailer would be welcome. Wind and any type of van trailer, camper or semi is a nightmare. Love our 5th wheel as it pulls nice, even when pulling the boat behind it. Glad you knew enough to slow down. Too many let their ego convince them they can overcome anything and that can be deadly. Thanks for sharing your experience.

We live in Sarasota. There was a tropical storm coming and our RV was in Tampa at Lazydays. They had just finished it and my wife and I went up to bring it home before the storm. We got a late start, due to me. By the time we were heading home the winds were here. While on south bound I 75 we came across a bridge. That wind hit us and I have never been so scared in my life. Fortunately there wasn't a lot of traffic and that is good because with that wind we were all over two lanes. I just couldn't control it. I told my wife to pray. Only God got us over that bridge safely.

Corral sand is great, it's cool to the touch. Wind can effect a vehicle to the point it becomes a harmonic force and progresses to the point of a tip over. You did the correct thing, slowly decrease speed and stop. If you rapidly decrease speed it can lead to losing control of your vehicle. Trying to fight it will cause a tip over as well. I had the same thing happen to me crossing the Mackinaw bridge in northern Michigan. Keep the rubber on the road.

one day...this will be our life. We've always talked about living this lifestyle in retirement. But you are opening up a whole new possibility...why wait? Now if only we could find a couple of work from home (RV) jobs that pay as well as our current ones...…in the meantime, I'm watching all of your videos in chronological order and thumbs up'ing every single one of 'em. You guys are great!

OMY, my heart is pounding for you right now. That happened to me on my maiden voyage out of Phoenix with DoJ and I will NEVER forget it. I have since added a sway bar, front loading, fu!l water tanks in front and slowed my roll. Still I am a white knuckle driver and can't travel more have han 6 hours per day as my shoulders, arms and wrists get so sore from my constant death grip. Glad you're all safe.

glad you are enjoying fla, its why we bought a retirement home here 10 years ago (part time home) we have a fifth wheel/diesel truck that we travel in 6+ months a year, but we can always come home to central fla and enjoy everything here. i think the swaying was the wind but you handled it well which is the important thing, keep on keepin on

You're doing it right! We're looking to buy a condo or 2 in places we enjoy and then VRBO them so they pay for themselves when we're RVing or hopefully sailing someday. That is the grand master plan!

Another great video. I'm sure that trailer sway situation was scary. Looks like we need to put Sarasota on our list of places to visit. Also very curious to see what you think of Destin. Loved that shark scene, you're video editing skills are awesome!

Destin was unreal. Even better than Siesta... which is hard to believe. But the sand was so fine, it squeaked like snow. But def. add Sarasota to your list!

Looks like you were near the Sarasota public beach. We used to own a condo off of Midnight Pass Rd on Siesta Key. I've been vacationing down there since I was 3.

Haha... if it did I didn't notice. I'll ask my some if he noticed the squeaking sand when he gets home from school. We also went to Lido Key beach and it was a completely different kind of sand with lots of shells.

Awsome vid. I live in Sarasota and enjoy Siesta key and other Sarasota beaches (Lido Beach and South Lido parks, St. Armands circle for shopping, Mote Marine to see and learn about dolphins, sea turtles and manatees, Long Boat Key driving to Bradenton Coquina beach. All very beautiful. Downtown Sarasota is great as well. I am a Florida native, live in paradise and never take that for granted. Glad you enjoyed. The mexican trip vids are very informative. I want to fulltime RV now and hope to see this beautiful country.

I drive an 18 wheeler, and I can tell you that wind can be a SERIOUS issue. Big trucks get blown over all the time.

Good point. This only happened in FL. So I think it was the combination of many factors. Wind, fresh water, tires being hot and a bit over inflated. No issues since.

Great video. Glad everything worked out with your sway! If I can make a suggestion, get rid of that friction sway bar. It's useless on a trailer your size. Get either an Equal-i-zer brand or equivalent hitch. They are night and day difference in towing experience vs a friction bar.
@KeepYourDaydream

Interesting... I'm sure you're right. Every time I lock that thing down I think, "no way". I think the weight dist. bars help though. I'll check out the other hitches.

Right now, we have a 31 ft Windjammer Travel trailer. We have added an additional anti-sway bar to our set-up, but it can still be a white knuckle trip on those really windy days. Been there, done that, and it isn't fun. We just put a deposit down on a new 5th wheel yesterday, so hopefully out towing will be easier in the future.

Congrats on the 5er! I've heard they don't have the same issues with wind or sway. Plus a little more space. Keep us posted! If you're on facebook - post a picture. facebook.com/KeepYourDaydream/
