You should swap those lead batteries out for lithium’s. You can use 100% of the rated capacity, they can take very high amp charge, maintain very high current load, and last for 10-15 years. You’ll be replacing those lead batteries several times in the life of one lithium. Also, you only need two lithium batteries to replace 4 lead acid. It’s just a way better deal. A no brainer.

At the end of your video, you discuss settings. Charge Rate. You said Trojan said to set it for 80watts. I'm sure you meant 80% since the setting is a percentage of the max rate output. Also, it's not watts, it's amps. The charge rate is measured as a percentage of 100amps. So 80% is 80amp. However, with 4 batteries, that's only 20amps per battery in the string. Checking with Trojan, the battery should be charged at between 10% and 13% of it's 20 hour AH capacity. This battery is 225Ah, so 10% would be 22.5amps and 13% would be 29amps. Meaning a setting of 100% for 100amps would be a more accurate charge rate at 25amps per battery.
@ChangingLanes
5 жыл бұрын
Yes.. I meant Amps... and 80% / 80 Amps are the same since it's a 100A charger. On charging, you have to consider that they are in series / parallel to get 12V. A 100A setting would be supplying 50A per set. You can only divide the Amperage for the batteries wired in parallel. I forget what the setting was as we have lithium now, but I called Trojan and they gave me the proper charge settings for our configuration at the time (4x6v wired for 12v).

Tesla was wrong for power distribution though. There'd have to be a distribution center in each house with HUGE wiring (huge power loss). DC would be much safer. Depends on the batteries. Most microwaves are 1500W. Add in 15% loss inverting and that's around 1700W which translates to 141 Amps DC from the batteries. So, the battery bank (and inverter) needs to be able to handle that.

Nice video. I am soon going to be moving into a 1991 Fleetwood Flair 22 foot Class A fully self contained Motorhome. My question is regarding the use of an inverter. My thoughts are to use 4 12 volt Deep cycle marine batteries, hooked up in series with each other, and hooking up a 6,000 Watt Inverter, then plugging the inverter into the Shore Power on the outside of the Motorhome, of course, turning off the built in converter on the Motorhome. I am planning on doing 95 to 99.9% of my living off grid, (boondocking). My plan on this build is to have Solar Panels, and a Solar Charge Controller to keep the battery bank charged. I have a rear hitch rack, and very large plastic tuff box that I plan on using for my Solar Generator Build. Do you have any tips that you can suggest for me that will help me build my Solar Generator, and have it work safely without causing any kind of damage to the existing electrical system of the Motorhome ?

Looks good. One question: If you are on shore power and are running the AC and you leave, if you lose shore power and the inverter picks up the load, won’t it drain the batteries pretty quickly?
@ChangingLanes
5 жыл бұрын
Yes it would! So, that benefit is more like a computer UPS. It can take over for a little while, but longer than 30 minutes or so, it will die also. For that situation, we use MarCELL to keep an eye on Daisy's environment when we're not home: amzn.to/2zoWKah It monitors power, temperature, and humidity. It does require service, which is $99/yr. You set thresholds (high and low) online for both temperature and humidity and define notification methods (text / email) all online. Then, when anything is amiss, both Tara and I get emailed and texted immediately. You can also check the temp and humidity online. However, we're hopeful that Ring or someone will come out with a device that integrates with our Ring security system. When that happens, we can get rid of the MarCELL.

How did mounting the inverter on top of the generator cage work out? I am considering installing a new Magnum MSH3012rv 55 lb inverter up there. I liked how you used the 2x4 lumber to increase structural integrity. I imagine it also dampened some of the generator vibration. Let me know if any cons came up. Fantastic and informative video on the Go Power offering. Just discovered your channel on my search to learn more. Quick follow up question (taking into consideration I’m certain your setup has changed since). How many amps does the 2000 and/or 3000 inverter pull from your bank without any other draw? I’m curious if I’m able to incorporate this first, similar to you, while utilizing just my current 2 deep cycle 12v batteries. I’m concerned the draw even at rest may be too much without the supporting solar and/or a bigger bank. Thank you in advance!

Yes.. we have a whole new setup.. See: changinglanesrv.com/?s=inverter In general, you can take the wattage and divide by voltage to get amps.. So, a 3000W inverter, running at max will need about 250A @ 12VDC. Hope that helps!

Wow, great video. Believe it or not I followed along just fine and your descriptions kept me right on line, great work. I do have one question; actually it may turn into 2 or 3 questions. You never mentioned your refrigerator, it looks like you have a residential, does that inverter handle that with no problem continuously while you're boondocking? If so, didn't your rig bring an inverter from the manufacturer? Did you just "upgrade" is all? When you spoke of your factory installed converter/charger, you mentioned leaving it installed and you just turn off at the breaker; is that correct? That will not interfere with anything?See, multiple questions. LOL
@ChangingLanes
5 жыл бұрын
Actually, our fridge is an RV (LP/electric) fridge. It's just a big one. 😊 That said, there was no inverter from the factory. Just the converter / charger. Leaving the stock converter doesn't hurt anything. It's just there as a backup if we need it. However, the inverter (the one we installed) will power the fridge. Hope that all makes sense...

We actually had 2 separate issues. One was a bad EMS. That was causing the one dead leg. We'd also been having an issue with getting an overload error when switching from inverting to shore or genny. Did talk to Bob about that and they sent us a new IC3000 (Bob upgraded us when I asked if we could pay the difference to get the 3000). We were fine with 2000W, but it will be nice to have a little extra juice available if we need it. We've also upgrade to 300Ah of Lithium since this video. Little over my budget so I want to get it right ! I am not full time but will need boon-docking. Should I have the dealer upgrade my inverter like you did? With batteries. I have zero confidence in my electrical ability. Thanks in Advance
@ChangingLanes
5 жыл бұрын
First advice before pulling the trigger is try to negotiate as close to 25-30% off MSRP as possible. The MSRP for our 397TH as configured (we opted for most features) was around 127K. We paid around 91K. If you're boondocking, an inverter is a must have as well as better batteries than the dealer will install by default. There is no inverter at all in most Fivers unless they have a residential fridge that requires it. And then, it might be only powerful enough to run the fridge and might only be on that circuit (versus the whole rig like ours). Not a bad idea to get the dealer or someone qualified to install it. Just make sure they know what they're doing and keep the DC runs as short as possible (inverter very close to batteries). Hope that helps! Good luck!

Do you have a pure sine inverter or modified sine and does it make much difference? How many Watts is your inverter rated for? It seems 3000 is needed for larger RVs. How do you handle switching from shore power to generator to battery and so on without two units fighting to charge the batteries or both having power trying to supply the same wiring? Is there an automatic solenoid or something that takes care of it when you are switching back and forth between power sources? I think that was in your video to a degree but could you elaborate a bit?
@ChangingLanes
4 жыл бұрын
Pure sine wave is the only way to go unless you have zero electronics in the RV. In this video we installed a 2000W, but we now have the 3000W of the same Inverter (GoPower). Only our Inverter charges the batteries regardless of power source (shore or genny). The GoPower is wired in down-stream from the ATS, so the ATS handles switching from Shore to Genny and back. And the Inverter will handle switching between charging and inverting automatically. Hope that helps!

FIRST THING!.... Do not buy lead acid batteries (they must vent)... Go with AGM or Lithium do not need to vent and you can do anything with them.. (yes even lay them on there side if need be) Basic information on them all... Lead acid: - Cost $60 to $100 about. - Heavy 80 to 130 lbs each - Dont last as long (short life) - Lot of maintenance - Can only be taken down to 50% before damage happens - Life very short (350 Cycles). @ 50% will die even faster. (self dischange rate 3 -20% each month) - Recharge rate normal and slow will take 30 Amp Surge Current up to (5 Seconds) Damage to battery. - 5 Year Warranty or less AGM: - Cost $150 to $300 - Much lighter (40 to 60 lbs) - No maintenance... you do nothing. - Life Mid or Ok (1000 Cycles) and less @ 50% - 5 Year Warranty or less on average Lithium: - Cost $1000 each - Very Light (29 lbs) - Zero long term maintenance - Very Long life (3000- 5000 Cycles) After 3000 it drops to 80% and 2000 cycles and so on until dead. - Recharge rate 90% faster then acid and will take 200 Amp Surge Current up to (30 Seconds) - 10 Year Warranty >> Lithium will cost a lot in the short term, but will pay its self back over the long term and hassle free it provides with faster recharges on solar and power.

In fact in our TT, I had a 150watt invertor, which ran the TV, media player and large hard drive. It wasn't happy when I added the laptop charger too :) Thank you for the detailed project review. Not to be a nudge, but the RJ11 is a 2 wire connector, RJ14 is a four wire connector and the RJ25 is a six wire connector. The first two are the same width, the third is slightly larger and all are used in home telephone systems. The RJ45 is the eight wire connector, but only when used for data (aka ethernet) - if it's used for four phone lines, it becomes and RJ61 (even though it's the same plug....). (I work for a local telco after I retired from the Navy.) Great video as always, and you've given me much to think about on my own inverter installation.

It's internal transfer switch is for passthru / inverter switching, not from a third source. Are there some that switch between 3 sources (2 AC / 1DC)?

I am purchasing my first RV this year. I have really enjoyed your content. I like the concept but as you discussed some of the directions of the wires it got very confusing. The process of feeding the wires through with the "slack" in the wire I would like to clarify, you basically used the existing wire as your snake? Attached the new wires and I assume another string or something to retrieve the original wire? Seeing as this is almost 3 years later, what would you suggest to do now? I have not even picked my RV up yet, it is used but, your information has clarified items I need to inspect. Thank you.

Pretty over the top. Pretty crazy. But an outstanding video, nonetheless.....great job, Chad. But I wouldn't recommend anyone try this unless you are a certified electrician. This is most definitely a "Pro-Skill Level" project. What really surprises me is that this is not one of the options you can elect to have installed at the factory. I would think you should be able to purchase several large roof mounted solar panel arrays along with a massive battery bank and have it all professionally installed right at the factory where they could do this fairly easily. I would think anything that extends your boondocking timetable is a good thing.

Awesome video. I was going to get a DRV Full House LX455 but am changing me mind. I think with the Grand Design Momentum 397th that has the 12 foot 6 inch garage be better than the 12 foot that DRV has. Plus with the Grand Design Momentum it has a 2nd full bathroom. I also like that the Fresh water capacity is huge, 157 gallon WOW, and the gray and black water tanks are decent size, 104 gallon, WOW. Yes I will be going solar panel and all. MY question?? Is there a way to go with diesel generator ?? Thinking of going with this Commercial generator set Quiet Diesel TM Series QD 6000/7500/8000.
@ChangingLanes
5 жыл бұрын
Yes.. we like having 104 gallons of grey when we boondock. It's actually two 52 gallon tanks, but we put this (amzn.to/2TE1jt1) on our dump connection, close it, open both greys, and boom.. a single 104 gallon (plus about 5 gallons in the dump pipes). As far as I know they only have the 5500 Gas models and some LP models in the Solitude line. A diesel genny would likely need to be added by the dealer, but GDRV could likely at least run the prep (ATS, power runs, etc)

Question: Does this mean everything that wasn't working when disconnected from shore, is now working off the inverter? Refrigerator? Y/N? Water heater? Y/N? I was looking at Trojan batteries, too, but AGM. With your setup, how many days can you go on inverter power without starting the generator? Basically, is your battery bank (450a) good enough? I'm doing the math for computer, cpap, tv, fridge off the inverter.......Maybe a quick use of microwave. I don't want to purchase 750ah bank if I don't need too.....
@ChangingLanes
5 жыл бұрын
Yes.. the way I wired this, everything is powered. In regards to duration, it all depends on what we're running. Since this video, we've upgraded to 300Ah of Lithium and a 3000W inverter (still GoPower). Remember that a 450Ah flooded cell / agm really means 225Ah. We can run the computers, TV, coffee maker, etc all evening, night and morning. Fridge on propane though. Sounds like your biggest draw will be the fridge. Do you know how many watts it is? Our RV fridge is about 500 watts (on 120), so it ends up drawing around 40-42 Amps DC from the batteries. So, we keep that on propane when boondocking.

@@ChangingLanes My fridge is labeled 600w for 120. I've been doing the math with and without the fridge. Sounds easier keeping fridge on gas as I'm not 24/7/365. I'll install a sub panel and put the needed circuits on it. I was looking at 4-6v Trojan J305, 310a@20 AGM for the 80% and a future 365w, single panel solar on the ground. Gotta have at least tv and cpap on battery. I'll look into a lithium setup, too. Lithium sounds like the way to go. Nothing too big that solar can't charge in a few hours and not too small that I run out of juice in a single day. Thanks for the help!!!!

I am looking at a Vanleigh at Lazy Days. Can you tell me how many batteries they provided you when you purchased your rig and what type? (Flooded cell or AGM) The 280 days of 1000 trails offer and the 24X7 tech...as included with the rig...are they really that useful? or valuable..Did you use either and how long were they vailid? thanks..

In most cases, the battery supplied with a new fifth wheel will be a low quality flooded cell. Ours was and we almost immediately upgraded to 4x 6v Trojan T-105s... We now have 3x lithium. When we purchased the 280 days the 24x7 tech were not a thing, so we really have no information we can add on the. We did get 14 days of free camping at Encore and used that at the most expensive one we could.. 😊

Like you, we have a Grand Design product, in our case a Solitude that came with one lead/acid battery and the WFCO 55 A converter/charger. We do a lot of dry camping mostly up in B.C.'s lower mainland. Not having the news on television in the morning, our k-cup coffee maker or blow dryer is, quite frankly a first world problem, but so be it. I've done a lot of research but, not having too high an electrical aptitude, I've stalled. Watched your vid several times and wanted to get some advice. We added two Battle Born Lithiums and plan on adding another one for a total of three or 300 Ah. We have a portable Honda generator, EU 2000 and a portable Zamp Solar 230 W unit. I've narrowed the choice of inverter to either the Victron 3000w 50 A install kit sold by AM Solar or a 3000w Go Power Inverter which, by the way, is manufactured up here in Victoria, B.C. The Go Power works out to be slightly cheaper but I understand that it won't service both legs on the electrical service panel. The AM Solar kit is pretty complete but more expensive. They advertise that both 50 A legs on the panel are serviced. We don't plan on powering our A/C so feel that the 3000w will be more than enough. I know that you used the Go Power 2000w unit but wonder whether both legs are serviced? I can furnish you my phone number if replying makes it easier for you. Thanks for your videos. They've been really helpful.
@ChangingLanes

Hi, Fred... The GoPower will service both legs. it just doesn't handle hybrid mode on both legs where it adds power to supplement shore or generator power on both legs. We recently replaced our 2000W inverter under warranty and they gave us a 3000W as a replacement. It's works great powering both legs. We've never tried to use hybrid mode anyway. Hope that helps!

I've discovered something of an issue, 2 things actually, and I've discussed it with a factory technician. Oh, wait, 3 things; 1. The IC-2000 will not start up in AC by-pass mode of any sort without a battery connection. Assume you have a problem and do not have battery connection to your IC-2000; the IC-2000 will not start. I had assumed that the IC-2000 would fail into some sort of AC by-pass mode where the AC mains feeding the RV would pass through the IC-2000 and the RV would have AC power. The tech said no. He said the IC-2000 must have DC battery or the unit can not power up. I told him page 40 of the manual shows there is, called 'AC POWER PASS THROUGH MODE' and a diagram that shows the battery switch in the off position. He said he's unaware, will look into it can e-mail me back. So loose battery DC power and you also loose AC power; literally dead in the water. 2. On the remote module left side are two buttons; Inverter on/off and Charger on/off. They each have a green light next to them. The Charger on/off's green light turns on and off as the button is pushed and the charger does go on and off. However, the Inverter green light is lit all the time and does not change when the Inverter button is pushed. After talking to the factory tech, he told me this light is supposed to stay on. The Inverter green light doesn't indicate if the inverter is on or off, it indicates AC mains input is present and that the inverter is capable of being turned on and off. To determine if the inverter is actually on or off, look at the LCD screen lower left corner and it will say if the inverter is on or off. Nothing in the manual comes close to explaining that. Oh, he did say you can go look directly at the IC-2000 and see the status light there to determine if the inverter is on or off. It's the upper of the two green lights on the unit; green solid is on, green flashing is off. 3. From the remote console, on the right, second down, is Unit Readings. The manual, on page 18, shows the readings are; DC, AC Input, AC Output and Temperature. However, ours shows a few other screens, one being fault codes. If no faults, it reads 'no fault codes'. However, if there is a fault, the code # will show up, such as a 342. This isn't in the manual and no where can I find a definition of fault codes. The service tech said this is the latest firmware loading into the IC-2000 and is going to e-mail me the fault code definitions. He also said the manual still hasn't been updated, but when it is, will send one my way. I don't know if your IC-2000 has this latest firmware or not and includes fault codes, but you may want to check.

Thanks.. I was aware of #2 and #3, but not #1. The remote firmware could definitely use improvement in terms of showing if the inverter is on or not.

First off I love all your video's They a Great, you give me a lot of ideas. As I watched you install your inverter system it brought back a lot of memoirs. I installed a Inverter in my 5th wheel in 2015 and installed everything you did but my inverter is a Xantrex Freedom SW Series 3012 | 3000 Watt Inverter/Charger and I installed a Zamp 450 watt solar system. Everything has been working great. I love my solar system. We boondock a lot. What's great about the solar is it charges as I drive down the freeways so when we get were we are going to camp my batt are all charged up. The only time I have to use my genset is when it is cloudy or I run the A/C.
