This isn't repair this is a band aid. Repair is removing damage and replacing it with undamaged material.

I just bought a 1973 Shasta that was already partially gutted. I am going to turn it into my writing studio in the backyard but it has some areas especially around the trim that need to be fixed. Thanks for the video you have give me some direction on how to proceed.

I think you did a great job and you gave me some ideas on how to fix ours. We will be stripping down to the studs and building up but we are not technical and seeing works and what doesn't sure helps in the long long for a permanent fix! The money the repair shops what is crazier then taking my car in!!!

Band aids never hold on forever , and if you can stick your finger in someplace that should be solid you need to take it back down to the stud and rebuild

Thanks for the good video. I have a R-Vision Trail-Lite camper very similar to yours and these repairs can be hard to figure out a way to fix. During the video you mentioned that you at one time had the lower front panel come loose. I have run into that same problem, and I am wondering how you fixed that.

Will the spray foam adhere to the acrylic adhesive, and will the foam support the screws enough to hold the trim in place over time?

Great video. I have water damage in that area as well, but mine includes rot where the bolt holds the corner floor to the frame in the pass through storage. The bolt is still there but has no wood to hold onto. IS this a self, fixable job? Do you have any tips on repair? My trim and siding panel is coming away from the camper similar as yours did.I could do that repair but that bolt in the corner floor to the frame concerns me. Thanks for any tips you can give.

In my case the floor had not rotted completely away like it sounds yours has so I was able to do a simple fill and fasten repair. You may have to replace some wood depending on the extent of the rot.

The Handegard...Thanks for the great tips..... altho.... put some Polyethylene (plastic sheet) over the support board and the Expanding foam will not stick to it as much.....also I found when calking... use some blue tape to mask the area so as not to have excess calking and fingerprints all over the siding....Leaving a nice 1/8 inch bead ..... A great job for a DIY'er ..... inspires us all.... !!!!

I've got the same camper! And the same problem... I'm thinking of using a product I have that hardens rotten wood , Then I'll add some plastic wood filler or 2 part wood epoxy Some eterna bond or a liquid sealer Then screw in the molding that I'll fill with a bead of caulking.. ... ,🤞 Unless someone has a another idea 💡

Sorry but this fix isn't really going to do anything at all. Expanding foam has nothing but rotten wood to hold on to. You need to remove all the rotten wood and replace it. the floor is gone. Foam will do nothing at this point.

+Rick C Thanks for the comment Rick! Had the damage to my RV been more extensive you would be correct and plywood floor replacement might have been necessary. As it was, however, in my case the rot was limited to a narrow area along the edge. The repair with foam is holding up very well! Check the video I made of the repair after one year. Just click the link you see at the beginning or end of this video. Maybe I'll do another one showing repair job after two years in a few months.

I like the fix..... sometimes when the sub structure is reachable, a fill and patch is the way to go.... I have done this for the last 42 years on old mansions with ornate trim..... #1.... stop the water...seal the area....and patch instead of an extreme cost to a problem .... especially when the rest of the RV may not last another 10 / 15 / 20 years....#1 AGAIN ...STOP THE WATER......

Be sure to use the expanding foam that is waterproof. I used the yellow colored foam on the bottom of a Class C then found out it soaks in water like a sponge. Found some black colored expanding foam for water ponds that was waterproof.

I have a corner that needs to be repaired like this. Winter is coming and I have no time to replace all of the walls on this onl 79 beloved Flair. Whomever had it before never fixed anything and just let it leak. Anyway I need to seal the corners just to keep the water out for the winter until next Summer when I replace the walls and redo the roof. Would this be a good temp fix for Winter???

Used to do roof repairs for others. I would apply Elastomeric (rubberized) Roof Coating by applying min. 3 coats with drying in-between coats. Any persistent cracking needs to be covered with Roll Fiberglass after your FIRST COAT. Then apply 2 additional coats.

I would have investgated that storage compartment and the seal that goes around it. I think that the water is draining from the top of that compartment. The only reason it rotted out the corner is because that job was previously tackled. With the trim not being properly screws down is why you had the rotted materials in that corner. So yes I would focus on that compartment seal.

We are having to repair our bathroom ceiling around our skylight in our RV. To make things worse our insurance may not pay for it. So it's up to us. we are going to have to gut it and start over since it has leaked since last July. He caulked it at the beach last year and thought he got it. We pulled it out to take on vacation to find the top and side walls are rotted from water damage. Any help you can give us is appreciated. We are still paying on this camper. So disappointed!

Thanks for posting, I give it a thumbs up... PS how is the foam repair holding up? did the screws really bite into the foam and hold........!!?? I can't imagine it would... but that's just a guess. I had to replace my water damage with pressure treated 5/8" plywood.. it was a daunting task..!!

I hate negative, critical comments, but these guts are all absolutely correct. you're essentially stuffing a big sponge under there to absorb and hold water. very soon it's all going to come loose, and bigger mess then ever.

After spraying the foam, did the screws hold tight in the foam?
@thehandegard
9 жыл бұрын
Hi Mary Ann, Thanks for watching! To answer your question; Absolutely Not! The spray foam was used strictly to fill some void and as an adhesive to relaminate the layers of plywood comprising the flooring in that corner. The screws I used to pull the trim back up which also supports the plywood repair, are very long and go up into the vertical plywood of the siding which was not rotten. Screws will pull right out of the foam so don't try to use it for a structural anchor.

@thehandegard
9 жыл бұрын
It may not be clear from my camera work but the bottom deck plywood area that was damaged was minimal and non structural. The foam did an excellent job of relaminating the layers of remaining plywood and filling a little void along the edge and in the very front corner. Being protected also by the factory vinyl waterproofing from below I expect the repair to outlast the vehicle. Time will tell.

Boy i tell ya.That is poor excuse for fixing something.Do you plan on useing that mold infested peace of junk and loesing your lungs to mold or do you intend saleing it to some unsuspecting idiot and letting them die from mold and other unsuspecting diseases?For the record my wife and i purchased a26 footer and they had it riged all to hell.the entire rv was rotted and we found mold every where.so now weve gutted it and in the process of a complete rebuild and it sure isnt cheap 3 grand so far.
