The second leg of our Virginia to Wisconsin trip. We normally stop off in Michigan to pick up fuel if we are going to cross Lake Michigan. It is always a tough decision on to cross or go over, however, with perfect weather conditions and still warm water we made the decision to go over. With the restricted area hot, we ended up with a little over 75 miles of water to cross which is a little bit longer than our normal path.. At 10500ft, this put us out of glide distance of land for exactly 20 minutes. The other typical route is up the Chicago shoreline which has you flying below 2000ft for 15 minutes or so. All factors to take into account in the risk calculation.
