It's a shame Recyclopse and Mortis weren't in different heats. Same with Killertron and Roadblock. They could have made a better final IMO.
@TheLegacyofHitchcock

I don't understand why the Judges decision in the Heat Final is meant to be so controversial. Mortis drove into the cpz with Recyclopse ontop of it, and got stuck on the sidebars. A few seconds before cease, Recyclopse was able to move backwards and forawards slightly, thus being mobile for longer than Mortis, who didn't move at all. The Judges decision was correct, because Mortis immobilised itself on the sidebars, just like REALITI was considered immobile when it got stuck on them.

For a while, I believed that Recylopse was the rightful winner because it stayed mobile for longer than Mortis- when they got stuck on the sidebars at the end, Recylopse managed to drive back and forth on top of Mortis for a couple of seconds. Think Supernova vs Spartacus in the Third World Championship. Now after carefully analysing the battle, I think Recylopse edged it before that. Mortis landed 3 proper attacks during the fight, one of which caused it to get stuck at the end. Recylopse bumped into Mortis several times and tried to get the tongue underneath. There were also a few points where Mortis was running away from Recylopse, with the latter in hot pursuit. Aggression isn't just about how many attacks a robot gets in, it's how the controller approaches the battle. Speaking of control, Recylopse drove over the lip of the CPZ a couple of times, but Mortis reversed deep into it, got stuck on the floor spikes. Then, again, it kamikazed at the end of the fight. Overall, this is how I'd Judge the battle: Style: Probably even, hard to say who had more flair. Unless its a really tight decision, style barely has that much weighing. Control: Recyclopse Aggression: Reclylopse (but somewhat close) Damage: Equal (Neither of them grazed each other)
@Combaticon

TBH I don't think Mortis' charge into Shunt's CPZ was suicidal and I'm pretty sure that if Shunt didn't wedge Mortis on to the sidebars, it would've been able to escape due to its tracks. Plus, it was Mortis pushing Recyclopes into the CPZ which counts as aggression for Mortis (and Shunt should've attacked Recyclopse). I think if the battle was judged today, it would've been judged up until the moment Shunt interfered, with Mortis the victor due to its aggressive comeback (yes they did get damaged, but it was from the Matilda - unless Napalm vs Demolition Demon needs to be rejudged). So for me, the real problem was ultimately Shunt attacking the wrong robot.
@TheLegacyofHitchcock
7 жыл бұрын
+Combaticon I agree that it appears Shunt sealed the deal at the end, although part of Mortis' right track had already gone over the side bars and it didn't drive away before Shunt pushed it. At 5:28 Mortis' rear looks slightly more angled to the camera than it was at 5:23, plus part of the bodywork seems to be grounded on the bar. There's two different shots in between and no sign of movement in the close-up of Recylopse ontop of Mortis. Due to the editing, we don't know how long the two robots were stuck in that position for. My interpretation: Mortis drove onto the side bar, and tried to wriggle away while leaving Recylopse on it. However, one of its track wheels ended up other side of the bar, and couldn't muster up enough momentum or get enough traction in the tread to get back over. Mortis' other track spinning caused it to reverse around slightly in an arc, but not enough to count as free mobility. So, before Shunt pushed Mortis, both robots were effectively immobile and the Judges had to call it. According to Noel Sharkey in the RW magazine, the match was so close that they wanted to call it a draw at first. Mortis probably landed the most aggressive attack of the fight yes, but it ostensibly resulted in it becoming immobile. That sways it slightly towards Recylopse for me.

looking back, it's a closer fight than i thought. first half, recyclopse had it - it was constantly chasing and harassing mortis, which was mostly just awkwardly floundering around the arena getting stuck on stuff. however, mortis pulled it back in the second half, constantly brutalising recyclopse with vicious charges. despite what some people might argue, both robots were immobile at the end - it doesn't matter if recyclopse was fidgeting back and forth, it was not getting off the top of mortis. that's like saying TRACIE was still mobile when stuck on cunning plan in the final. i'd still give it to mortis, as i think recyclopse's aggression came across as a bit half-hearted, and it accomplished nothing in the second half where mortis was still able to get a couple bumps in.

Pretty sure all the rubbish about good defensive work and constant mention of aggression from Recyclopse was just Johnathon Pearce's attempt to make the judges' decision seem reasonable to viewers, as I'm assuming his commentary was added long after the battle. About the only positive thing said about Mortis was that style comment right at the beginning!

@lilwhiteboi339 A full Robot Wars fight was 5 minutes long, yet we only ever saw about 2-3 minutes of them due to editing. They were edited to fit the timeslot and to make them controversial and exciting- a lot of crucial points in the judging were cut out. Darke Destroyer and Dominator 2 were seen to cause damage (most important in the scoring) in the battles, and they probably caused more than what was seen, plus there are other reasons- T2 was shown driving into cpzs, losing control points.
@TheLegacyofHitchcock

@Fireworkatheart Mortis got stuck on the sidebars at the end and were immobile, while Recyclopse could still move ontop of it near the end, so the decision was correct. Also yeah, they were more sporting than the show usually made them out to be, smiling and laughing at their pitting in series 3 against Gravedigger, and trying to protest against the Producers giving them another run in the series 2 semi final trials and being unfairly scored higher than Napalm.

It's funny how everyone was dreading Mortis when no competitor robot was really capable of inflicting actual damage on another until series 3 gave us Hypno-Disc. "Look at the holes!" Jonathan Pearce shouts, but WHAT holes? Those little dings? Dunno if Mortis made a conscious decision to try and become the Robot Wars 'heels' or if they're just the only team who were ever poor enough sports to attempt to protest a judge's decision. In every other battle I've ever seen, no other competitor has ever expressed anything more than "rather disappointed", so either Mortis decided to play the 'bad guys' for some on-air drama, or they're just really poor sports.

The judging was what was poor - not Mortis’ driving (at least not by comparison). So what if it clumsily ended up in a CPZ and got a little scratched? It didn’t change the blatant fact that Mortis did all the work whereas Recyclopse did NOTHING! If it was the only one that ended up immobilsed on those bars at the end and Recyclopse escaped, _then_ it would’ve made sense for the latter to win by a technicality. But it didn’t, so there. Mortis should’ve won, and the show was blatantly and wrongfully biased against the team. For people to not see that and say otherwise is absurd.

How people are seriously defending such an idiotic judges' decision here is astounding. I even see people talking as if Recyclopse gained sufficient points when it did practically NOTHING in the battle! So it slightly pressed against and slightly slid its tongue beneath Mortis - wow! Guess what? Mortis was doing all the real attacking, and it shouldn't have been penalised by a minor driving error in which it took superficial damage at worst, whilst also being pinned for longer than necessary by the arena spikes. It's not as if Recyclopse caused any of that. And as for the end when Mortis was stuck on the bars, if Recyclopse escaped that predicament it shared with Mortis and left it for dead, _then_ I'd understand the latter losing on a technicality. But that's not what happened, so that's not a valid excuse to penalise Mortis either. Such a shame that the first televised judges' decision was one of the worst ever.

It's not hard to see this was only the second show. I'm sure everyone was taken by Recyclopse's flipper, what with that being the first proper flipper to appear in Robot wars, but Ultimately he didn't get to deploy it and with even a couple of series experience the judges would have recognized both the brutality and damage of a decent wall ramming and that a wedgebot with lower floor clearance is better than a flipbot that cant get under it.
