I feel like Whitley having Kai from the Snow Queen fairy tale be his inspiration would be so good. Kai gets a shard of a mirror that only sees bad things stuck in his heart and becomes jaded to everything around him. Whitley's shard is essentially being left behind by both his sisters to terrible parents which leads to his more jaded and obnoxious personality. Weiss could then have a character moment with brother that "saves" him from this shard and brings out a kinder personality I'm sure he had when the family was more put together.

I don't have too much of a problem with Lionheart's characterization if his weak quivering behavior was shown to only be behind closed doors. Out in the open he needed to put up an image of being noble and brave. And while we're there change his design too. He needed to be clad head to toe in full plate Armor with bright colors, not browns, a long flowing cape and Lion's heads sculpted on his shoulders and chest, something super regal looking. Right now he just looks like a scared Chemistry teacher which downplays how much of a threat Salem is. Like of course the guy afraid of his own shadow would be afraid of Salem. But if he was fully decked out, it would make the audience think about how much of a threat Salem really is that even someone who looks the perfect archetype of a brave Paladin from a fantasy game afraid enough to switch sides. Right now it's just like Salem is selling dr*gs on his property and he can't do anything about it. And ffs why did they make him a faunus? You'd think they would save the Merlin allusion for the Relic of Choice's avatar, and not just because of the Crown=King thing. Merlin's magic is often centered around prophecy, and as we saw in The Indecisive King, the Relic of Choice sends future visions to the wearer presumably to guide them as Merlin guided King Arthur. Just saying the wizard defined by his future knowledge would be better used as the avatar of the artifact embodying destiny, rather than be shoehorned into a position that already had a Fairy Godmother figure who would fit it like a glove.

Mercury baffles me the most. He's been here since volume 2, yet has the least effort put into him. According to the wiki (again not a very credible source but I think it's been confirmed), Mercury is based off the Roman god of the same name. But the only similarities they have are the name and the wing symbol Mercury has on his outfits. Literally nothing else, why? A commentor on the page had an idea of him being based on "the girl with silver hands" a Brothers Grimm fairy tale and the two have some interesting similarities. It at least sounds more interesting than what they decided to go with.

Ambrosius is the second time I see the concept of "creation" attributed to Merlin, the first being the Fate/ franchise where Merlin has a skill called Hero Creation EX (though that one is specifically about educating someone to become a king), so out of curiosity I wanted to see if in the old stories Merlin is ever attributed with the concept of "creation" in general (I'm not an expert so take everything i say with a grain of salt) From what i gathered Merlin created Stonehenge and the Round Table, as in the table itself, so that could be the reference? But it honestly feels really flimsy as nowhere is it stated that Merlin used magic to create either of them, also apart for those instances i couldn't find any other time where he "created" something, his main thing still seems to be prophecy and shape shifting, but regardless that's one possible place where the whole "Merlin creates things" could come from
@Dezmis

I thought that the round table was made at request by Guineveres father as a gift to King Arthur when he married her but that may just be me remembering fate lore. It's also said that it was simply a Cornish carpenter who made it at Arthurs request so that all men that sat there had equal status. Then again it's hard to nail down an official cannon to the Arthurian mythos so it wouldn't surprise me if it was stated somewhere that Merlin had a hand in making the round table.

THAT'S who Ambrosius references!?!? Honestly, I had theorized that the Staff entity was going to be Merlin leading up to the reveal, but _nothing_ about Ambrosius evokes that character _at all._ Even straying away from the original source, 'Merlin' has become synonymous with 'the ultimate wizard', but Ambrosius is so bogged down with convoluted rules concerning the use of his powers, I thought he must have been based on some obscure trickster god I didn't know off the top of my head. What a fucking weird choice, I can't decide if it feels more like they made the character, then picked the reference, or if they picked the reference, but then realized how OP a MERLIN character would be when associated with CREATION and had to take an axe to how the character would even function lest the audience expect Too Much. I was also under the impression that Fria was the Blue Fairy so I didn't even make that connection. Also, Jacques is not only Jack Frost, but he's also the Evil Queen to Weiss's Snow White. So he gets two while Willow gets nothing. Ayeayeaye....

Yeah, I had seen images of Ambrosius without seeing the most recent volumes and had assumed he was the Blue Fairy since I didn't know his name. But... AMBROSIUS?? THAT is what you name your character inspired by Merlin? It's SO on the nose! To explain since it's slightly obscure, Merlin is on occasion known as Merlin Ambrosius due to him being him combined with another mythological figure of that name. This is the equivalent of making a King Arthur allusion, naming him Pendragon, and pretending you're being subtle! Even the other characters that are obviously referencing the names of their inspiration aren't this obvious unless there's a pun involved(other than Ozma, who's obscure enough I'm not going to complain)!

You know, I'm pissed that Willow, Winter and Whitley don't have a fairytale. I mean, come on, Jacques has a fairytale, and now EVEN THE GRANDPA SCHNEE HAS ONE!? I've always thought Whitley's fairytale was the magic mirror of Snow White. I mean, it worked for the Evil Queen telling her what she wanted to hear, like Whitley does with his father, following in his footsteps and being "a nice heir". The mirror also had the ability to inform the Evil Queen about anything she wanted, and if we use the inspiration, it could go well with Whitley being an informatic guy, technology and all. Also, the magic mirror has its connection with Snow White. Imagine if RT made a reference to the part of the fairytale in that the magic mirror describes the beauty of Snow White and says she's "the fairiest of all". if Whitley was the magic mirror, RT could have use that when they wrote V7 but more like Whitley, maybe him doing a rant about his sister and being jealeous of Weiss and her perfect voice, dance, battle style, friends and all that, ending the rant with "she is the fairiest of all, huh?"... wow. And about Willow and Winter... Maybe Willow could be the Snow Queen and Winter the young girl Gerda (even she can be both Gerda and Kai). Willow build up walls to keep her emotions "safe", and she hides her agony, problems and loneliness with alcohol, making a reference to the lonely life of the Snow Queen, and also, her absence in her children's life could act as a metaphorical fragment of the magic mirror of the Snow Queen's fairytale, because that fragments turns the hearts of the people in cold and cruel ones. Winter as both Gerda and Kai could work well. Gerda in the story goes to find Kai after the Snow Queen kidnaps him. Her pure heart keeps her going on in her journey, and she succeed in saving him. BUT, if we talk about Kai, he was kidnapped because a fragment of the mirror of this fairytale gets into his eye and turns his heart cold and cruel. He only can see the bad side of the people. At the end the fragment slips from his eye so, yeah, good ending!!! We could use both Gerda and Kai as a development for Winter. She was like Kai when she was younger, her mother's absence and father's actions turned her into a cold and distant person. As time goes, she acts neutral and so with everyone near her, even with her siblings, pushing her loved ones away. Using the info of the series and the character development she had, we can say that she had become more closer to her young sister and even with Penny (maybe, idk, RT says that but we never see it on screen so...), making her more caring and solidary, like if she was now like Gerda, with pure heart and all, and at the same time, like Kai when he no longer has the fragment in his eye. Idk, I've always assumed this were their fairytales, but apparently no. What a dissapointment.

Doing the vol 3 commentary, I believe the writers mention some regret over not using Ciel more than they did. If they indeed forgot about her doing vol 7 and 8, but remembered team FNKI, it kind of puts into questions if the writers plan ahead of what they are writing, or if they are under a strict timetable and just add shit as they go along

What makes Watts fairy tale reveal even worse is that there is already an evil Watson for Moriarty named Sebastian Moran. It just makes it feel like even more of a stretch when the character they're looking for already exists and they don't build it around that.

If they had to have the Spirit of Creation be a super buff guy, I would’ve given him just one eye and make him a reference to the cyclopses from Greek mythology (the ones who made Zeus’ lightning bolt, Poseidon’s trident, and Hades’ invisibility helmet). That would make hell of alot more sense than Merlin, and considering it’s Atlas a Greek reference would make sense too. Technically (and I don’t know if I can confirm this) but I think Fria the former Winter Maiden was supposed to be the Blue Fairy. Besides the blue colour of her powers, many people considered Penny receiving her powers was the ‘becoming a real boy’ moment (before V8 screwed that up). I kinda prefer this idea mostly because 1. Screw turning Penny completely human; and 2. I’d retcon Watts to being an evil Geppetto and Pietro into Jimney Cricket (I mean he’s got the green colouring and multiple legs on his technically not a wheel chair rather than having it float or something), so keeping the BF as someone who could’ve regularly interacted with the two would make for possibly more interesting story (and with Monstro there I want to include as many Pinocchio references as possible.) Ciel could always be Cinderella’s godmother, considering the focus on punctuality (and the Disney film’s version had a blue aesthetic and RT’s lazy like that). And technically they did have Tyrian’s reference play a bit more in the plot, since when offered to work together with Qrow to take down Clover Qrow accepted the deal like an idiot, and Tyrian than framed him for the murder. So... clever? And i’m Still pissed that the thief who is stealing stuff from a person living in the clouds is based off of Robin Hood and not Jack and the Beanstalk! I feel like they could’ve made Willow be a reference to the magic mirror, repeating what Jacque wants to hear or something.
@twiinsiink

I really don't think Fria was referencing anything, just like how Amber and Vernal aren't references. Fria's not even wearing blue. Ciel being the blue fairy makes way more sense than her being Cinderella's godmother, due to the star on her forehead and being partnered with Penny.

Honestly, I think Jinn and Ambrosius should've been switched. Since Amrbosius is supposed to be Merlin, it fits better since Merlin did have the power of prophecy and he served as Arthur's mentor. And making Jinn the spirit of creation could work with the granting of wishes.

I couldn't agree with you more on this whole heckin video. Like couldn't they have Sun's team all based on Journey to the West Characters (I.E: Zhu Bajie/Pigsy, Sha Wujing/Friar Sandy, Tang Sanzang)? Also, people have been saving it's no big deal, but, why not have the Cardinal Witches of Oz be the headmasters of the main huntsmen academies (Locasta for Vale, Evanora for Mistral, Elphaba for Atlas, & Glinda for Vacuo)? Why did they have to go with "Daddy Merlin" as the spirit of the Lamp of Knowledge? (I actually like the character, but, he'd make more sense as the spirit of the Lamp of Knowledge while they'd go with a more fairy-like spirit for the Staff of Creation.)

With the mentioning of Weiss' family, I took a look at the allusions section on the character wikis and Whitley's page had this... "Whitley's arc has several parallels to that of Kai from the Snow Queen. Under the mirror shards influence Kai becomes closed off to the world and behaved coldly to those around him. Kai's vision is literally clouded by the shard in his eye, and likewise Whitley believes he is looking at things objectively while not seeming to truly understand the abuse he suffers under.The strongest evidence of all, a hug. A hug and a gesture unconditional love, and Whitley just thaws. Immediately devoting himself to coming up with solutions to help others, after a single selfless act is rewarded." So far, there's been nothing for Winter or Willow's allusions so do with this information as you like

I JUST HAD A BRAIN BLAST MOMENT. Whitleys fairytale could be the boy who gets enchanted by an EVIL MIRROR shard and stolen away by the frost witch in the Snow Queen. Think about it, they’re both characters who have fallen under a bad influence who need to be saved by someone close to them, the mirror aspect ties Weiss and and Whitley together pretty well fairy tail wise, and The way the boy was saved in the fairytale was that he was showed a true sign of affection by his best friend (I think in some versions it’s his sister) It’s by no means perfect but it’s better then just leaving him with nothing😟 Fuck you could make Winter or Willow the Snow Queen depending on what works for you and, actually, why doesn’t Winter to represent The White Knight??? It would fit with her position of power and you could even say that this is a jaded take on the White Knight character or something IDK ROOSTER TEETH JUST BE MILDLY CREATIVE THIS SEASON!

@@twiinsiink That is so weird, Ambrosia at least has more divine connotations that Merlin; some myths even have him as the son of an incubus which would seemingly run counter with objects created by the gods for the good of humanity. Like Jinn referencing a being that is heavily associated with an object, I'd figure Ambrosius would connect to an object related myth. I mean, I knew there is an Ambrosius Aurelius in Arthurian myths possibly related to Arthur but I never knew that was also Merlin's name and I would never have made that connection. Watts should have been Rumpelstiltskin. His gold accents are reminiscent of spinning straw into gold, along with his name being forgotten in the shadow of Pietro, like how the fairytale character makes his name a riddle. Plus, he took control of Penny!! He took the first-born of someone who'd wronged him! If they just gave him a backstory that he accomplished a special part of the science project with Pietro, but didn't get credit, he would've been the perfect Rumplestiltskin remake. Edit: His semblance involves strings! Spinning gold! Oh my gosh, what could have beeeeeen

I'm also going to headcanon that Winter is Rudolph. Her first outfit has a large red gem at the collar of her shirt, and she was disowned by Jacques in a way one might connect to Rudolph being ostracized as a child. Then, she receives a chance to prove her potential by becoming the Winter Maiden. It's not at all perfect, but I wish there was more to her that we could go off of

7:43 Its very funny that you bring up Merlin makeing Excaliber due to how vauge the awnser can be based on which version of the canon you want to use. So in some cases yes Merlin did create the sword that was pulled from the stone (be that Excalibu or Caliburn based on the version). And, that idea kinda overtook modern interpritations so if we wanna use the ruby slippers thing with oscur then we can use series like Fate or any new shitty Arthur tv show were Merlin did make the sword.

Thing is they established something much better to be their Merlin figure with the crown existing, allowing for someone to see into the future and know what will happen and it, being a crown, can also be a reference to the fact that Merlin caused Arthur's kingship by casting the spell that trapped the sword in the stone and reciting the prophecy to the kingdom. On another fun note coming from their animated side stories of what the crown did (The Indecisive King), being another reference to Merlin in that he was the one who had managed to get King Arthur's parents together. He is also mentions Camelot's violent downfall which again is what the crown did in the aforementioned side story plus it is what the King saw so double points in symbolism of that regard because "Merlin" is warning King "Arthur". Another thing that I realized when I came back to this video is that if they named the city "Atlas", a being who was punished by going against the gods, that they have another allusion they could use, Prometheus. Not sure if it's well known or not but Prometheus created people from clay (much like Ambrosius did with Penny), and was then later enchained to a rock and then tortured by the gods for giving humans fire (That way his chains can work towards his allusion like Jinn's does). And another thing to note is that Prometheus is a Titan, something akin to a prototype of a God, which would explain why he's has a rather young well built body.
