i've only driven one version of the FRZ86 and that's the toyobaru TRD version with about 15,000 miles on it at the time. I daily drive a 2010 R3 with the usual bolt ons with about 155,000 original miles at the time (with barely in spec compression numbers). The FRZ86 T(u)RD just felt slower in every aspect and was nowhere near as comfortable to drive. I should also mention that my car is considerably faster than a bone stock rx-8 with roughly 100,000 less miles so my experience going from my car to the T(u)RD wasn't too surprising just like the outcome here isn't surprising either

Very late comment but since nobody else has answered... Basically the revs don't fall fast enough shifting from 1st to 2nd if you're trying to shift as fast as possible, because the top of 1st at 9000rpm and ~60km/h lands you a little over halfway through 2nd at like, ~5000rpm and ofc, still 60km/h. The shift is straight back though so you can do it pretty quick, and the revs might only have time to drop to 7000 or so, and when you let the clutch reengage, the difference in rpm of the clutch disk and the flywheel means that something has to slip to equalise it. If your clutch is buggered it will just slip, but with a healthy clutch it will lock the drivetrain to the engine, causing the wheels to slip until the rpm comes down. Same principle as a burnout, the higher flywheel rpm dumps enough energy into the transmission to break traction on the wheels. 2nd to 3rd is harder to chirp because the gear change is a little slower since it's diagonal, and the RPM difference is smaller, 9000 down to 6000-ish. I can't recall doing it on a 2nd to 3rd shift but I have a lightweight flywheel, so there's less energy available for breaking traction.

That's kinda funny to make a judgments off of. I love both cars because of what the FRS stands for and the entire package, and because of the novelty of rotaries (current RX-7 owner). But ya know, if cars were inherently better and showed exhibited that constantly, drag racing wouldn't be a sport because the car dictate the win. Obviously, drag racing is a sport and a victory, not superiority, is earned by skill (with the exception of non-stock classes of drag racing). Read with the emphasis on "drag" racing. Fanboy on kids.

are you sure the RX-8 won? Looked dead even to me even with a really crappy launch for the FR-S (and still probably on abysmal Primacys). I'll take the FR-S anyday: reliability, lower CG, great MPG, better looks, it just stomps all over the RX-8 as a package.
@TamNgo84
6 жыл бұрын
Of course the RX-8 won. Why is that even a question? The only ones I haven't beat were boosted. All the things you've pointed out are debatable except for mpg. Let's not pretend the flat 4 doesn't have problems, and "packaging" is better in the 8 as it has usable rear seats and more upscale interior.
@nunyabusiness896
6 жыл бұрын
The GT86 and BRZ are rated the most reliable cars in both Subaru and Toyota's lineups, so I don't know how the boxer 4 has "problems" www.consumerreports.org/car-reliability/10-most-reliable-cars/ The "upscale" interior is debatable as well as I don't find it to be any better quality and you can get leather/alcantara seats if you want them (I don't, but you can have them). The RX-8 was also much more expensive when it was new in 2018 dollars, a base RX-8 was about what a maxed out special edition BRZ would go for adjusting for inflation. LOL, I also see I misread your description and that you are the RX-8 owner, now I see what the fanboy defensiveness is about. It's no big deal, just get an 86, they're coming down in price now, dump that ticking time bomb and get something you can drive worry free for decades with better handling, better looks, and all the crap I already listed. You'll also see that saving 400 lbs. is better than having 30 horsepower for the last 500 RPM before redline, well, if you ever do racing that involves corners.

TVAGaming Just because they have 200k on the odometer doesn't mean they haven't been ripped apart and rebuilt in that span. There have been 86's already that are just getting their first spark plug change at 150k (overdue, but still). And what does this have to do with *my* care for a rotary? I never owned one, I just knew a bunch of people that did and all they did was complain about how scared they were that their engine was going to go at any moment (esp. RX-7 FC and FD owners). And lastly, really? The David vs. Goliath argument? The GT86 is the king of taking down more expensive and more powerful cars.

Yeah, the S2 are a tad heavier. But the gearing is better, and the engine is changed a tiny bit as well. The seats are the only thing I truly want from the R3, but people will rarely want to part with them, and if they are selling them, it's for a huge premium. I think it'd be worth it as I would want a truly plug and play into my car and not deal with seat brackets and SRS warning lights on my dash.

rx8 wont win on the touge, probably. and gt launched poorly. Yet, Rx8 (surely rx7) witn ROTOR, not swapped to some crazy 2jz - is a pure joy for the drivers. Revs, sound, balance. Gt86 is also quite cool. Its newer, which is nice, its easier to have, even with subaru engine :) and its cheaper to have (not the price, the service etc). Both are great with stock engine. hate to see them swapped :( like, whatever, but If you wanne have drift\powerful car with JZ - go with chaser. Same with silvia. Yeah, with sr20det it wont be a RDS car and wont beat M3 on straight line, but its a pure joy to drive and has great balance. Anyway, would love to own both :)

Having driven the Toyobaru, and a few of them at that on the mountains in north GA, I can say they have a bit more body roll then the RX-8, stock for stock. The skinnier tires don't help build confidence either. I think the ever so slightly lighter Toyobaru makes up some of the lack of power, but it's close, not bad. The problem is that buying either used, I'd go with the Toyobaru for anyone looking for one today. You will most likely find low compression RX-8s on the market and they will not drive very healthy in the power sense. If you can find one, might be worth a shot. The nice thing is, that if you do find one with compression numbers, it won't change overnight. They will only wear slowly over time but you can expect happy driving for quite a few years. Having owned my RX-8 for 12 long years before selling it off last year. Still a fun car, I miss it. Hope you find something interesting in the future to enjoy.
