I am far, far from an expert on Conjunto, or any genre Mexican music, but even to my untrained ear, Flaco is just amazing. And I've always found it interesting how Ry finds his way to be part of a band, not just a solo act. He just fits in, doesn't need to dominate. Back around the time he did the "A Meeting by the River" with V. M. Bhatt album, I think it was on an NPR interview, maybe not, he just tries to find a place to fit in, regardless of the genre.

I'm a couple of years older and I've always made a point to see Ry whenever he's come East (mainly NYC/NJ). From the Bottom Line show in '74, to the couple of shows he did in small theaters (Richardson Hall) at Princeton U - with Flaco and the Pahinui (sp) Bros (think Chicken Skin Music) and which this video is all about (minus the Hawaiaans). There was the 'Jazz' show at Carnegie where he highlighted Bix, Jelly Roll, and which had an amazing duet with a guy from the Golden Gate Quartet who did a sand dance with Ry playing solo. The intro of John Hiatt (after he got out of jail) at the Ritz in NYC. Buena Vista (also at Carnegie) was amazing (though Ry was content to play in the background most of the night). A cancelled show in NYC (Summerstage/Central Park) which Ali Farka couldn't attend because of civil strife in his native Mali. That was a tough cancel. Though we did a bag of mushrooms, had no interest in seeing James Blood Ulmer, and just bar hopped, giggling on the upper West Side. Which brings me to my last show with Ry and Ricky Skaggs and the White Family down in Ardmore PA. Had 2nd row seats for that one. Now? Waiting for my next Cooder adventure. See, you only go round the track once in this life. Plain and simply, you don't miss these things.

I bet they asked him to join, based on his work with them. Wikipedia: Cooder was a session musician on various recording sessions with The Rolling Stones in 1968 and 1969, and his contributions appear on the albums (Yank Rachell-style mandolin on "Love in Vain"), and , on which he contributed the slide guitar on "Sister Morphine". During this period, Cooder joined with Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman, and longtime Rolling Stones sideman Nicky Hopkins to record . Cooder also played slide guitar for the 1970 film soundtrack , which contained Jagger's first solo single, "Memo from Turner". The 1975 compilation album features an uncredited Cooder contribution on Bill Wyman's "Downtown Suzie".
@thomasminarchickjr.7355
3 жыл бұрын
He filled in on some of Let It Bleed after Brian was booted and he worked on the Performance soundtrack with Mick. Memo from Turner is Ry on guitar. Keef also stole the open G tuning from him and a riff or two. The Stones stole from everyone. They stole band members, Billy Preston, Bobby Whitlock, Gram Parsons, etc. They aren’t good guys. No honor at all, but then again they bragged about being junkies to kids to sell more records so I’m not surprised.
