Finally, nice clear skies yields pretty video, featuring a battle between EPIC CIRCUS and GAUCHO. GAUCHO gets rolled and spit out to the other side, but they're so good they won this race over us by ONE SECOND.
Two weeks in a row- ONE second. What are the chances? that's scoring error and anticipation. Grrrrr. Last week we overstood two marks, but this week we sailed about as cleanly as can be done. Oh well CIRCUS has a better argument for not finishing behind a boat they spit out at the start- so I won't complain.
Notice all competitors on the same tack at the same time going into the start? If the one furthest from our boat had come back a bit earlier into the pack, I'll bet it would've disrupted people's timing back to the line.
As it was, everyone had their own spot. Note the 40 yr old J105 with beautiful lines take advantage of their longer waterline and displacement to maintain over the modern plum bow J88. It is obvious when the 88 just barely slips back into the 'now bleeding out' position when they start to really fall behind- and tack away quickly.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS wound up coming all the way down to our hip pocket from their boat end start! I like the 'speed' strategy and thought it might have paid against us, but we finished ahead of them (and they are 'scratch' boat that needs to finish first as they owe everyone time) after good downwind chases.
In realtime,I'd have bet a dollar that CIRCUS was OCS when the gun went off.
Beautiful early September Wednesday evening! Get out and compete!
