I'm 54 years old and I remember Rye Playland being one of my family's summer outings. Every year, because I was still too little, I had to stand and wait while my mom and older aunties would ride on this particular ride!! But once I got older, we stopped going. Now I live in Georgia. Well I say I should put this on my bucket list! 🤔🤔😆

Such great memories of visiting Rye Playland for our 6th grade "senior trip" from PS 91 in Queens back in 1986. Thank you for sharing this video.

I remember going on this ride last year and thinking it was just a regular merry go round type thing... I was wrong and it was so fast when I got off I couldn’t stand up lmao

It may not look like much but this ride is the absolute best! I love to put my feet up on the highest peg and slap the behind of my horse and pretend I'm in the Belmont stakes.🤗 Been riding the Derby since the 80s.

I was fortunate enough to ride this a few years ago. I decided to ride the outside horse and wow, as you can see you have to hang on tight and lean in!

This might be the best park in New York.

If you don't enjoy this ride you have no business at an amusement park! It's always fun, when you ride it's unlike anything else out there.

I remember this being super fast, and the horses not only went up and down but back and forth. I noticed They stopped the back and forth movement. It's the best carousel rides ever invented.

This was a great ride. Dragon coaster was always the first and last ride Derby Chase was always second.

That "park paint" on the horses is a disgraceful way to treat this treasure. These horses Charles Illions-carved each had a beautiful, air-brushed paint job and instead of spending the money necessary, they slapped on this awful park paint. This rarest of treasures should be respected.

When my wife and I rode this about 1968, the horses heads dipped up and down jerkily and the ride was really fast. You definitely had to hold on tight and lean left. It was one scarey ride for me. My wife said it was like riding a horse. NO children were allowed on this ride.

What a shame that they applied "park paint" to these beautiful horses. This ride was installed in 1928, and is the only of the three surviving Derby Racers that has horses carved by the legendary Charles Illions. It's also the only one that runs fast. A few years ago they were beautifully painted in great detail, but the park decided to cut corners by painting them as simply as they could. I hope one day it is restored to its former beauty.
