Probably the most beautiful version I've ever heard of this beautiful ballad.. Sung with the tenderness it deserves. Most singers just shout out the lines..this is much more beautiful..Go ndéana Dia trocaire ar a anam dílis..

I came to know his music much too late as well. But hearing everything on Raidió na Gaeltachta about him after his passing was so touching I felt the loss of him as though I had known him my whole life. Also, if you want to learn some of the language, there are a lot of classes and groups now that would welcome you - the Gaelic League of Los Angeles has free classes over zoom. There's people everywhere from Antroim to New Zealand who be there!

@@gwenbutler9687 Thank you so much for response. I have taken lessons but language is not my forte😞 I think the best time is as a child l worked in the Middle East and children on the beach were able to converse with each other in Arabic/French/English. Happy birthday in all three languages was sang at children’s parties.

A lot of folks that sing Irish ballads force their voices to sing it out as loud as possible and they destroy the songs. ...Séamus never sang like that...That's the reason he was so special...

Very sad but true song. Sings it so sincerely from the heart no bitterness just truth and love of Eire.Times have changed but more change is needed and no bloodshed.. we have had enough of murder killings shootings kidnaps barbaric deeds on all sides .if it was anywhere else in the world it would have been sorted or never started.. The UK wouldn’t like if the Guernsey Jersey isles etc were ruled by Germany and rightly so. The people suffered hugely there. And for what more power more land and when the people responsible for awful crimes and cruelty against men women and children die they go to their graves empty handed. They might get statues erected in their memory but there are thousands of statues all over the world and nobody knows who they are for. We need to live and let live in harmony and love.

Come all ye young rebels and list while I sing For the love of one's country is a terrible thing It banishes fear like the speed of a flame And it makes you a part of the patriot's game My name is O'Hanlon, I've just gone sixteen My home is in Monaghan and where I was weaned I've been told all my life cruel England's to blame So now I am part of the patriot's game It's barely two years since I wandered away With a local battalion of the bold IRA I've read of our heroes, I've wanted the same For to play up my part in the patriot's game This Ireland of ours has for long been half free Six counties are under John Bull's tyranny And most of our leaders are greatly to blame For shirking their part in the patriot's game They told me how Connolly was shot in his chair His wounds from the battle all bleeding and bare His fine body twisted, all tattered and lame They soon made me part of the patriot's game And now I am dying, my body all holes I think of those traitors who bargained and sold I'm sorry my rifle has not done the same For the Quislings who sold out the patriot game.

Oh dear, too girly a voice for this song. I perform this song probably once a year at our local St Pats event. I like the criticism the original words give to De Valera, a man who held Ireland back a decade IMHO. Missing verse - why? This was in the old days when the IRA fought only against soldiers, not like the murdering bunch some decades later. Bob Dylan ripped this tune for his "God on our side", a song I perform sometimes.

@Howard McKay What a big boastful man you are, telling us precisely nothing about this great man and yet everything I need to know about you in the process. You're not getting it. Seamus contributed more to the music than you could ever dream of. He forgot more than you could ever hope to know. That man had more music in his eyebrows than your entire career. How dare you use this touching video of his memory to inflate your own ego.

@@seanearnest Why would I tell you 'anything about this great man' - I know nothing of him. Where is the 'boast' in that, simple fact? All I old you about me is that I perform this song usually once a year on St Patricks day. Simple fact. Where is the 'boast'? Are you a fat angry woman by any chance? Now, if you want a good rendition of the song - Luke Kelly is the man.
