English subtitles available - Train traffic and architecture at Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz suburban train station, Leipzig (Germany). This station is part of the city tunnel of Leipzig. The tunnel passes under the town in nearly north-south direction. It was opened in December of 2013.
In 2024, lines S1 to S6 of S-Bahn Mitteldeutschland (the suburban train system of the Leipzig/Halle region, Germany) run through the tunnel. Mainly silver-coloured EMUs (electric multiple units), class 1442, type Bombardier Talent 2 are used. They are very similar to class 442 units but they have 2 doors in the middle segments. On most lines you'll see trains with green doors, on line S2 with orange-red doors.
The station lies approx. 20 meters below ground level. Using the escalator it takes almost 2 minutes
to get to street level. At Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz you see the new town hall. At street level large monitors display the next departures.
The station interior and the entrance buildings are made of glass blocks. They are illuminated from the rear. This results in a high, bright room.
