What you missed, but touched upon, is about Cougar being Kazuma's older brother. Cougar's perspective on life is not that different from Kazuma's, because Cougar did more than teach Kazuma how to fight. When you realize that Kazuma emulated Cougar's attacks, because Kazuma and Cougar share attack names (Shocking First Bullet). From the scene you depict of Cougar using speed to blow a hole in the wall, is no different from Kazuma's punch through a wall. Cougar and Kazuma choose to live their life to the fullest without regrets, they just have different means to get there, even if those means would produce the same results. Punch or speed, they'll get through the wall. Ignoring the retcons from the movies, your complaint about how they don't resolve Kazuma's plot about his body falling apart is actually addressed in the series. Just like how Cougar dies, Kazuma also eventually dies; I know it is "ambiguous", but it only makes sense for them to not survive. Live fast, punch hard, and die early. The message of the anime was literally to live and die without regrets, no matter the means, because consequences be damned.

when I was a kid I had a theory that because of the constant evolving that mainly those two did with their powers that at some point they were going to permanently become their own version of something like the black and white creature. which could have been a neat way to open up a different spinoff series with "the big three" being the most powerful scryed entities like 50 years later or something to that effect.

The manga of S-Cry-Ed is straight up inferior to the anime, for sure. I read through all of it and chased down the English volumes. I think they're still packed into my basement. Halfway through or so the manga just stops taking itself seriously whatsoever which resulted in one of the dumbest endings of any manga I've ever read. Space ship time machines, Tenchi Muyo, it just goes fully off its rocker. The best part is the Jojo-esque art but the anime series was more coherent, somehow, and that's not an anime series known for coherence to begin with lol.

A few thoughts (Hi I kind of like sCRYed, you can tell from my username) The manga... is... is. It's a lot different, especially at the end. It's been forever and a half since I read it, but I distinctly remember the ending something batshit insane. It's definitely more ecchi for some reason, but other than that, it's worth a read I think to just... I dunno, I enjoyed it but I also picked it up as it was being released, and sCRYed is easily a top five, if not top three favorites for me, again, look at the username. I think they did just fine with the "using Alter power fucks you up" plot point. I don't think it needs to necessarily be fully resolved, because as stated, it was affecting both Kazuma and Ryuho (for pushing SO HARD beyond regular Alter users, IMO) equally, and the last fight is so satisfying just... yeah. One of the things I think is kinda wack is I'm not 100%, but it looks like when they did the movies I think, they put in a definitive winner in the last fight which sucks, I always loved the ambiguous nature of the ending. sCRYed is one of the rarest shonen anime ever. It starts, tells it's story, and leaves. 26 episodes. That's it. It doesn't linger too long, but it's incredibly satisfying. That's why I feel like over explaining what in the world is going on with the "Alter power is fucking us up" thing would just have over explained it way too much, and why I would never want a season 2. It's perfect as is. Oh, and Straight Cougar best boi. RADICAL GOOD SPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED.

X, Samurai 7, Gungrave, Elfen Lied, Chrono Crusade, Avenger, Paranoia Agent, Monster, Gunslinger Girl, Kiddy Grade, Samurai Champloo, Burst Angel, Argento Soma, Rahxephon and so many more. The early 00's were amazing for anime. What a time that was. Yet only like two or three of the ones I mentioned ever get brought up in conversations though. Monster, Elfen Lied and maybe Paranoia Agent get mentioned often enough. But I guess that's what happens when One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, Inuyasha, Fullmetal Alchemist, Gundam Seed, Yu Gi Oh, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and other series are also on around that same time one way or another. Seriously, what an absolutely stacked time period for anime.

Something i would have talked about a bit more was the contrast of Ryuho and Kazuma. We already know they have contrasting ideals, but even down to their appearance and ESPECIALLY their Alters. Ryuho's being very uniform, symetrical, sleek and of course being a summoning type. While Kazuma's is Asymetrical, wild, and being augmentation. Both helping personify their beliefs. Ryhu eventually turning into a form akin to a super hero, while Kazuma becomes a wild beast. As for the manga... It's an interesting read, but it pales incomparison to the anime. The story is completely different. Major elementas are swapped around. It hits none of the same notes, and it leaves way...WAY more mysteries unsolved. The ONE SINGULAR thing thats solved, is the "mystery" alter, where in the anime is kind of just a manisfestation of alter power, in the comic... It's just the leader of Holy. The guy who grows old and dies in the anime, yea, in the Manga, he's the black flamed Alter. Beat him, series done. He was the big and only bad. No major revalations or conclusion. The Manga was... what I could only call an attention seeking series that was trying to grab attention to new viewers. Hence all the Violence and sexual content. It was a new property, so it was trying to go overboard. A mix of clashing ideals, but nothing to really connect it all The series is fantastic. They actually took all the things they wanted and put them together.

Great highlight on a classic Adult Swim Anime I grew up on! I indeed hated the villain and the ending, it was very unsatisfying, but the series itself and how it progressed made it worthwhile in the end. The characters are great, action is solid, art is good especially for a 2001 Anime, and its hard not to love most of the characters. Kazuma, Kimishima and Cougar (Crispin Freeman nails it) are def my favs. His best friend was awfully brave in a world full of Alter users. Outside of the poor ending, unlike Cowboy Bebop or Code Geass S1 and S2 very satisfying endings, I think it was the right choice to not make a sequel. It still hurts thinking about the last few episodes, the villain, etc, but it was a great ride through and through. Often times a sequel attempt can ruin an Anime's status as being a Classic watch. Hell, look at the Higurashi remake so long after or The Devil is a Part Timer? Imagine outside of the Bebop movie if they tried to make another series? We got Space Dandy instead which I was totally on board for : ) On the other hand, I'm still holding on to dear life for a No Game No Life S2 *cries*

I can tell you that the manga isn’t worth it because it feels like a disjointed puzzle. To give you an idea, the ending after Kazuma fights a manchild Commander Martin Jigmar who controls wild Alter in a fight through time (they travel to the age of dinosaurs) you will see Space Invaders come to Earth to attack it only for a Spaceship controlled by everyone who appeared in S-Cry-Ed who died or was alive in it and ready to fight the Space Invaders. It was THAT out of place.
