I think it is a matter of time they will made it difficult for Foreigners other than elite class to renew their visas On comparison I think it is better to retire in Malaysia as landed property can be legally bought and mostly are freehold MALAY is an easier language to master as compared to Thai. When a child is raised in such a green house environment there will be a rude awakening when they joined the labor force In real life there will be stiff competition in China Singapore Hk and possibly in certain cities of advance coumtries So would the child stand a chance in Thailand competing for a job Though I like Chiangmai a lot I worried about the government No place is perfect but for every advantage u perceive to have there is always a price to pay Just sharing my two cents worth of thpught I am Singaporean with Hk pr looking to retire in Johore Malaysia I have stayed for 8 years in London and Scotland I also spent 15 years working in various cities in China

malaysia is indeed the most liveable for Chinese (from any part of the world). affordable and moderate. Thailand is just too alien due to rather large language barrier.
Thank you for sharing the information. I am surprised how much were spent on food. 30,000 Thai Baht is $870 US dollars. The average US family budge is around $400 dollars per month. It looks like food cost in Pattaya is not much cheaper than US. Why not stay in China till the kids finish high school? They can come to US for college. Then you and your wife can retire in Thailand. It is just an idea.
