Etter å ha lest beskrivelsen av byggestilen i "Markens grøde" er det svært interessant å se på moderne film.

Seems weird, to have a mud hut in the arctic. Is it waterproof ? Can it withhold half a meter snowfall ?

First several (at least 3) layers of birch bark is known to hold water (but it seems that 1 layer is enough, though), and adding a good, living turf roof above it adds insulation. In my country, where can be 50 cm of snow at the late winter, can be problematic even for metal roofs, when snow begins to melt and gain more and more weight. Therefore it must be taken manually. But a smaller houses like this can hold snow better - which can be seen reasonable structure for hundreds of centuries in northern countries. Reasonable enough with local materials and low tech tools and techniques. These aren't just basic clay- or mudhouses - they are made of turf, which insulates and holds its structure its own way.
