The problems of all the gadgets mentioned are designed for detering non-professional burglars or opportunistic burglars. Secondly, the laws in the UK are too political correct, i.e. they have more protection for the burglars than the home owners. The general advice by the police for situations where if the home owners discover a break-in is to leave the property and call the police. Don't face the burglar. I mean if you are 6 foot with strong build, the burglar is only 5' 5 thin build. And if you beat the burglar up, you can be charged by the burglar for bodily harm. There were cases on the newspapers where the burglar's legal team successfully sued the homeowner because the glass of the window which the burglar broke in order to break in cut up the burglar's arms!!!! This is not America. Homeowner CANNOT kill or beat the sh*t out of the burglar if the burglar is caught and overpowered!!! I would like to add a point about front door. A lot of homeowners sacrifice quality for low cost. The construction of front door should be given emphasis on durability and strength, not cost!!! Yes, you can buy a cheap door for the front door but will it stand against ONE strong kick from a 6 ft strong build burglar?!?! Yes, it is true. Good workmanship in the UK does cost a lot of money. This goes for the cost of installing double glazing. Please carry out thorough research on the products offered by double glazing companies regarding the glass plane used for all the windows. PVC double glazing sounds great from all the adverts but they are just not strong enough against a few kicks if used for front and/or back doors.
I am sorry that the property law in the UK is different from that of China. No, you are not allowed to build a metal gate as you described. I understand what you are trying to do. In the UK, there are the building regulations of the council or borough that you live in, then there is the fire department and last but not least, the Health and Safety Regulations. In general, the walkway or corridor outside your door DOES NOT belong to you. In China, the developers include that bit of area as part of your property as a way to get back more money for the cost of the building. In any case, if your property is an apartment or flat, the property you own is the actual flat and usually an allocated parking space. That is all. Therefore, the area outside your flat is not your property hence you cannot alter or build anything there. Also, things like where you want to install an air extractor fan in your kitchen for an example, you have to check your lease to make sure whether you require any permission from the landowner before you can puncture a hole in the wall, i.e. putting a pipe through the wall, etc. In my case, we even have to get permission to change my windows from single glazing to double glazing. In most cases, if not all, the landowner will communicate to the leaseholder via solicitors so you may have to hire a solicitor to handle the procedures. Fortunately, there were a large number of property owners that wanted to change from single glazing to double one. The solicitor fees were shared so it turned out to be very low. The apartment complex has its advantages and disadvantages. Most of them have good security and great facilities. But the disadvantages mentioned above are quite tedious one. I mean simple thing like installing your own satellite TV is a big hassle if there is no common satellite dish. So, do your research thoroughly before buying an appartment. Buying a house has a lot of advantages but the disadvantage that gives the biggest headache is security as it will be your own responsibility. 鬆仔 had shown a house with pretty good interior and refurbishment. But, to me, the first alarm bell is that the previous owner has grown tall shrubs right in front of the front door. So, the door is out of sight to the street and hence neighbours, heaven for burglars or any suspicious characters hanging around the entrance.
I had a sentinel smoke cloak system fitted in my last house, trust me , it’s the best, when it’s activated , it took approx 15secs to fill my house up with smoke and you could not even see your own hand!! Any scumbags who breaks in will run a mile!!
