This wheel is a part of the two zylinder reversing-engine, to turn the engine forward or backward. Big steamengines like this cannot reversing by hand and manpower only. But if the reversing-engine have a technical problem, you can turn the big wheel by hand, but this need a long time and much power in your arms. Unsafe is it only, if unknown people nearing this machine. kind regards by a steam-enginer from Hamburg

thats powerful for an expansion engine of that era but you definitely need all the power you can get if your an icebreaker...fabulous.

Linnix13, the ringing bell is from the engine room telegraph that has been changed for better speed on the wheelhouse.

It's the reversing gear, you can clearly see it working at around 6:55 .. when the wheel spins, you 'll see the reversing cam moving, and the pistons reverse direction

What is the current status of Sankt Erik - the last time that I was in Stockholm, a few years back she was not operational but I spent an interesting couple of hours exploring her from wheelhouse to engine room.

Isn't there a diesel engine knocking in the background. A pump or something? Or am i mistaking.

The noise is from the cooling water pump, driven by a steam engine whose bearings need some t.l.c... You can se it at 4.13 min.

carljesper I see. sure sounds like a diesel. I see that the movement of the pistons in the engine at 4:13 fits the noise.

I have shovelled coal for 12 hours a day for 1 day on the William C Daldy steam tug. It's hard but not as hard as you think. I've also done 12 hour shifts 2 days a week for 3 weeks where we rotate firemen every half hour so half hour on and half hour off and so forth. If you work like that it's easy enough anyone could do it.
