Great review. 2 years ago I was on the fence about which of these to buy. A couple weeks ago I had a problem with my pedal drive making noise. I actually bent the shaft trying to disassemble it. Finally contacted old town. And within a week i they sent me a new drive. I applaud old towns customers service.

Great video Mark! Thank you for sharing. I think it’s also worth mentioning, the Outback comes with paddle and plug-in (cassette) included. The PDL on the other hand does not that’s about $200 value. I often fish shallow body waters and both come in handy when I just prefer to go with a paddle instead of dealing with raising and lowering the drive every minute

Thanks for the thorough comparison. I just pick up my 2020 Predator PDL and look forward to chasing BASS in it. In a nut shell I think your right for fishing in skinner water the outback would be the better platform. The outfitting for the wiring can be easily dealt with on the PDL.

This is as a well presented comparison. I have been paddling for 60 years and have been contemplating a pedal boat for seating comfort and having both hands free to fish. I tried a Hobie yesterday but decided I’d go home think about it. After watching your video it seems that it is not worth it to me having the cockpit full of pedals or motor and all the other little fiddly parts just to be a bit more comfortable. I think you saved me enough $$$ to pay for my next trout trip out west. Excellent channel. Keep up the good work.

Hey Mark. Actually the gasket wasn’t the problem at all. I installed the gasket also with the ugly 1 inch lift of the cover also. Come to find out the water was coming in through the mounting hardware of the hatch bungee. I removed the hardware and siliconed and replaced with washers with rubber washers and filled the voids up with silicone. Haven’t had no issue since and removed that unuseful gasket. Haven’t had any water issues since.

The one thing I do not like with the Hobie Outback , is , there are to many pull handles and cords and cables for me . Way to many parts to fail and break . Rudder up and down cord , Rudder Steering , Cheap plastic parts as you stated on the Foreward and Reverse cords of the Drive System . Two Sided Steering Control Cables instead of just one side . Even though yes on the Water, Two side steering would be Amazing. More Cords for the Transducer Mounting System . More Cords / Bungees for the H-Rail Systems . Way too many Cords and Cables for me. And the Plastic on the Hobie is Way thinner and Cheaper for sure . There have been Several hulls that have Cracked where the rear seat brackets sit on the hull and as you Stated the Hull as Sloped Wear you Stand while Push Pulling . I Totally Beleive that the Hobie is a great fishing Kayak when it's Brand New , But , I just think there are Way too Many Cords and Parts that fail Constantly . Just look at your Foreward reverse cables , you some Cord on there instead of what suppose to be on there . And the Front Carry Handle cord always Breaks . The Lower Rudder that while Loading and unloading does and has the Potential to break and Bend . That's why Hobie Gives you the Grey Loading Assist Part that goes on the Rear Handle of the Kayak . And The Front Hatch Leaking , and there Answer is Some Cheap Rubber Seal to fix it as an after thought for a Failed design . And to top it off Hobie only offers a Three Year Hull Warranty and a Two Year Drive Warranty . And just think after Taxes and Shipping you could all of this Fine fishing Kayak for over 3K. I'll Stick with the 2020 Predator PDL and or the 120 PDL and a Lifetime Hull Warranty and 5 Year PDL Warranty for Sure . Too much Maintenance and too Rich for my Blood for sure . Just Stating my opinion only as you did with yours . Great Job on the Comparisons , Love the Channel 😎👍👍

Thank you for the review. I am in the market for a peddle kayak. I was looking at the Old Town Predator PDL. I'm so glad that I watched this video. I wanted to get a better look at the boat, and I got it now, now, I'm going to test one. I'm not much of a shallow water fisherman, more of an open water fisherman. I want to get out into the Atlantic. For skinny water fishing, O.T. makes a console cover so you can remove the drive unit and not have a gaping hole in your boat. O.T. claims it is strong. The downside is, no drive unit, but it sheds some weight. I like the thicker hull on the O.T. over other vessels. I also like the lifetime warranty on the hull. I think I'm going to own an O.T. Predator PDL soon enough.

Honestly think both kayaks have a proven track record and people certainly like them. Also understand the need to push pull in the marsh. However to say they are virtually the same it's kinda humorous to me as I have been in both as well. To say the Hobie flexs in heat is an understatement and a significant difference between kayaks. The Hobie bends in heat, deck deflects under standing weight, and both side walls deflect under weight or pull on accessories. The price point between the two is significant and as you noted if you are paying that much, why pay for a thin hull, thin side wall, kayak body that deflects under weight and bends in the heat? How you spend your money, to each their own. Pedal drive warranty vs cheap plastic cable components also seems a no brainier. As you note in the marsh.. when you are shadow enough to have to raise the drive in the Predator its less than 18" of water. If you pedal at that point you are likely polling the bulk of the distance anyway. You could maybe get another 8" shallower in the Hobie but risk bending paddles and banging the chain stay?? Agree on the seat assessment. Like the 2018 Predator metal rudder over 2019-2020 plastic one. Recommend pedal upgrades on both as they are small. Depending how picky you are about wiring, I ran my wiring exposed and take it under the front hatch on my Predator, drilled zero holes and use neoprene to maintain the seal. My buddy decided to do the same in his Hobie as the gaskets began to crack in the Oklahoma heat. Many prefer anchor trolley over power pole as it's really only useful in 6-8 feet of water. I appreciate the effort in apples to apples comparison. Me personally the price, the material thickness durability of the hull, and warranty really do not make these kayaks "virtually the same." Prepare to pay $4,800 for the new Hobie 360 vs $2,400 for the revised Predator as shown in this video only gaining a tighter turn radius. Thank you for the assessment and as you mention, personal preference, but for a greater variety of fishing conditions will continue to roll out in the Predator.

Exacllent comprehensive review! One question that I have, that I don’t believe you spoke about is, on the OTP, when you have to pull the drive up the center of the kayak is exposed to a large hole which leads directly to the water. Seems like it exposes to losing potential gear/personal belongings?

Great review! I'm in Tampa and was looking at different kayaks. I was able to test the Riot Mako and Vibe Shearwater. The area I was at had very shallow water and that Riot was such a hassle to pull out the drive. The fins on the Shearwater can be positioned against the hull plus I could flutter pedal past the shallows. What a difference. Although no reverse, I am told the Shearwater drive can be popped out and put in reverse. Not sure how practical that is when fishing structure. Decisions, decisions

My front hatch on my Outback seals 100% and it's great. The front hatch on the Outback is also easier to open and close on the water compared to that one on the Old Town. I've had plenty of kayaks over the years with that style hatch and Hobie's design is way better.

For standing in the Hobie, go to walmart and by a yoga mat in 3 mil or 5 mil. Cut to size and glue it down with a spray adhesive to level out the floor. $7 for a 3 mil yoga mat. I was wondering if you can stand on the plastic, or is it too thin, because that would mean there is room to turn around 360 degrees in the hobie.

I was down to the 2020 Outback and the Predator PDL as my choices. I really liked the new knock-down fins on the 2020 Mirage drive but it came down to the open/choppy water performance of the hull and that forward hatch. I fish Rockport, PINS, and the jetties so having a bit drier hull and sealed hatch was the deciding factor. I also got my Predator for $2499.00. If Hobie fixes that front hatch issue and puts the 360 Mirage on an Outback hull, I would switch over but I couldn't justify the cost of the Pro Angler with the 360 at the moment.

Great video Mark. I think Hobie should make a redesign on their front bow and hatch and they would have a great kayak maybe add a little thicker plastic and some places and For how much a power pole cost I feel the motor should be able to pull it out of the mud even when it's a little stuck maybe power pole needs to do some adjustments to those Motors not trying to knock power pole I know a lot of people love them but maybe they should look into it

Great unbiased review without hobie fanboy hoohah, thank you! I looked at both myself and the 2020 PRED-PDL was what works best for me, for several factors, primarily BTB. The bow design of the PA has been hurting for a redesign for a long time, let alone sloppy engineering with the front hatch and a few other areas. Was still a close call, almost bought a PA12, but the advanced speed and other quality factors stood out with OT vs hobie.

I appreciate your videos quite a bit. I've been looking to buy a Kayak to fish my local waters which basically amounts to Hilo Bay in Hawaii, and maybe the outside of the breakwater as well. I've always been a fan of Hobie, but I'm thinking of the Predator instead. No shallow water here, but there is some coral and submerged lava rock in the shallows when launching. My only concern is the drive and any damage it may incur if I hit something as I wouldn't want to be stranded in ocean currents. As a new kayaker, I'm not really sure how I'd equip either, don't know what I need vs want. Thanks again for the video, very informing.

nice review. i had a Predator for about 6 months and liked it, BUT...it's too heavy. I now have the 2019 Outback and tho I miss the easy/instant reverse, i love the lighter weight and the rails and the all the cubbies in which to stash stuff. I added the stand up bar and really like that for getting up and down. The OldTown seat was a little more comfy for me to (6'3") but I've been on the water many times for 6 hours in the Hobie and it's still comfortable. Both nice boats but 117 lbs empty was killing me getting it on and off my truck shell roof mount.

I think you gave Hobie to much credit, I prefer a prop vs rubber fins that saltwater eats through, I prefer the much thicker plastic, and built in handle, and the rudder that you can’t bend when transporting. But also depends on what type of fishing you’re doing. I prefer the old town all day, especially these new hobies, I heard the quality is worse.

However both my feet hurt over here hahahah.... cracked me up Mark... I was all ready the how lovely your feet felt in the Hobie. The OldTown paddle holder is a winner. The company coming up with the best design on the pedal drive is going to clinch the deal... Has to handle shallow water like the hobbie and has to to have forward and reverse easier that Hobies current option. I don't think the 360 is ready for prime time, from what I've seen. I've seen some failures that scare me.

I can't make up my mind on drive systems. My two choices right now are the native slayer propel 12.5 max or the outback. I like the mirage drive for the sallow waters but I like the pedal drive for the deeper waters and especially for the instant reverse. If theres an emergency of some sort or nasty weather moving in with strong winds I think the pedal drive would have a better grip on the water to move faster. So my head is spinning on what to get and I want to make the best investment whether it's a new or a good used one because they aren't cheap. I can't afford to buy one of each and rig them out the same.

If you haven't already decided (your post was 8 months prior to my reply) I can tell you the Propel Drive is easy to maintain but you really have to get on it aggressively to go 4+ mph. It cruises well with minimal effort at about 2.5 mph. In comparison, the fin drive systems can hit that 4+ mph speed with the same minimal effort as what would get you 2.5 mph on the Propel drive. I have both...there are pros and cons to each. For me personally, the Propel drive is more fishermen friendly...especially the instant reverse. I have not tried the 180 or 360 drives on the Hobie so that may be the game changer. But for what they cost, you can go full electric trolling motor with a new Old Town and beat both systems.

Has this been a concern for others buying a kayak?

What's the best tandem fishing kayak in your opinion?

Not sure. I've never fished from a tandem so I'd be lying if I recommended something.

Great review Mark! Confirmed my thinking....as a bass fisherman and lake fisherman the Old Town has several advantages. Will be picking mine up in the next two weeks and can’t wait to get it on the water!

If the majority of my adventures were bass fishing it would be my go to kayak.

Why are you using the power pole? Whats the reason for the power pole?

Theoretically to anchor in shallow water.

Hello, it may be too late to get a response from you on this, but I have a question. I'm old and not that strong. Which of these 2 is "easier" to paddle. I'm concerned about my leg strength. My instinct says the Hobie but because of the Outback is faster I wonder how easy it is to pedal... BTW, I hate riding bikes and bike exercis machings. Wondering if the Hobie is more of a push movement rather than a round circular movement. Hope you see this, Thanks for some great vids on these Kayaks.

Not sure about which one is easier to paddle. The Predator is faster than the Outback. Sounds like the Mirage Drive will suit your needs for a pedal stroke.

Never heard of someone wanting a heavier kayak... I knw oldtown sent you the kayak. ( and you gotta find anything that is better or close to Hobie) But cmon lol the best part of the predator is the front hatch and is prob a better offshore platform... that’s abt it. You shd of also mentioned the diff in price I can totally see that being a factor.

Instant hands free reverse in the predator is another plus. That's pretty much every pedal drive vs the mirage. I still prefer the hobie.

I imagine lifetime warranty means a lot to some people since its built like a tank. I'll never know since I fish flats.

I need some advice. I purchased a 2020 hobie outback but i was thinking i should had gotten a Pro Angler. I wanted to try ocean fishing and want to know which would be better for that type of scenario? If i can get away with my outback, it would be great but if not, then i rather be safe than sorry.

My experience tells me to never be caught in the open water with my new Outback. Others will disagree and it doesn’t make them wrong. But I know better and would never forget the way I felt after my first time out on the open water. I’d say go with an adventure island.
