It was about engine production date march 2015 the M278 switched from silitec (aluminium/silicium) sleeves to cast iron sleeves. So all the late 2015MY and 2016MY onwards have the cast iron sleeves, new pistons and rings to suit. But M157s were never updated due to low volume production which is a shame.

How well did the Silitec peform? Why was it retired? Supposedly General Motors worked out most of the bugs in their Aluminum Silicon alloy Vega engine, renamed it the Durabilt, and then ended the project.

Another day another classic M278; the Maybach bumper also helps with cooling. Maybe it is a good idea to try to drive slowly the car to the scrap yard

There were some rumors on the forums that they switched the M278 to steel sleeves after a certain year. But I don't think it's true. It makes no sense.

I think the change is 2016, it's a metal coating not steel sleeves "twin-wire-arc-sprayed coating" M157 didn't get the update. Edit: Look up document AH01.00-P-0300-01AMG

@@joetrojan2568 people say that it scratches anyway with this new coating, installing the oil cooler from the AMG probably will help a bit but if the driver is pushing it hard and the temp of the oil goes to about 120-130 Celsius scoring is almost guaranteed

The oil temperature on this stock engine works like this: - when cruising goes to 100-120 degree celsius like 1000-1200rpm - when running down Autobahn then oil temp drop to 80-89 degree rpm dinamic I think it has something to do with the variable oil pump , what do you guys here in the comments think?

You think its the rings moving causing them to bite on the cylinder wall? I heard it was over 70k to 90k mile engine injector wear/carboning so it bore wash that cylinder wall of oil or bent rod..... 2016 m278 and some 2015 are meant to have the steel bore and they claim this issue doesnt happen. Another words MB knew about this and change the bore material to try stop it. End of the day this bore material didnt work good for m157 and m278 for probably multiple reasons.

m278 early and all m157 are pure junk unless built up properly by someone like Tasos. 4.0 biturbo is the way.

Terrible design by Mercedes Benz. Go back to the OG engines you used to built. Unless they fixed this issue after 2016.
