Nawab Mirza Khan Daagh Dehlvi, better known as ‘Daagh’ was born on 25 May 1831 during the Mughal era and was a poet known for his Urdu ghazals. He was born in Chandni Chowk, Delhi. He spent his early life in Delhi but had to leave in 1856 for the Rampur State where he stayed for 24 years. He was considered one of the best romantic poets of his time. He died in 1905 at the age of 74 in Hyderabad Deccan after a paralytic stroke.
This short clip is of Malika Pukhraj, mother of Tahira Syed, singing one of Daagh’s Ghazals ‘Saaz Yeh Keena Saaz Kya Jaane’. This clip appeared in the ‘Movie Mahal’ TV series produced by Nasreen Munni Kabir for Hyphen films.
It must have been recorded around 1938/1939 as the Wadia Movietone film, ‘Kahan Hai Manzil Teri’ is mentioned and that released in 1939. However, it appears this Ghazal ended up in the film Azadi-e-Watan in 1940. The composer of Kahan Hai Manzil Teri was Master Damodar and the composer for Azadi-e-Watan was Munshi Dil. I’m not sure of the original composer of this Ghazal.
