@TheCatgirl6 Yeah but Linus needs to be an underdog, so that she doesn't notice him. Bogart is perfect for the role because he's not traditionally handsome and it's every other quality that makes her come to love him and you do as well. We understand that this man would have loved her beautiful or not. That's excactly what the film is trying to say. That if you look beneath the surface you may find something unexpected. Cary Grant is too good looking for the role

@TheCatgirl6 , yes, but Sabrina is not really supposed to take much notice of Linus until he starts courting her - there's no way that she wouldn't notice Cary Grant - he would have been too handsome and debonair for the part - Bogart is great as Linus because he's not exactly attractive and not necessarily an obvious choice for Sabrina - which makes the fact that they fall in love all the more sweet and unexpected. Grant would have overshadowed Holden as Hepburn's other love interest.

@irinka94 I don't think they got on too well. And of course Wilder had originally wanted Cary Grant for the role of Linus (and for the part of Frank Flannagan in "Love in the Afternoon" with Audrey) but per the doc here that casting fell through... a pity. I love Bogie, but the part was tailor-made for Cary. I would have completely understood Sabrina's affections switching from David to Linus with Cary in the role. Oh, well.

@shawthingfilms You raise some interesting points, but I still think Cary would have been better as Linus. Given that Bill Holden was younger, and playing a rakish charmer that Sabrina had adored from early girlhood, I think audiences would have bought her initial lack of interest in the more serious-minded Linus even if he was played by the handsome Grant. In fact Grant in the role would have added more genuine suspense as the audience waited to see which brother Sabrina would finally choose.

@Muirmaiden Yeah, I get all that, but I still feel you're short-selling Holden's appeal in the role of David--and more importantly, his appeal for Sabrina. Remember that David was the object of her affection all her girlhood; he was her prince, her hero, the love of her dreams. That kind of singleminded obsession wouldn't yield immediately or easily to another male's charms, even those as obvious as Grant's. Sabrina's falling for Linus would have worked for me with Cary; it didn't with Bogie.

Cary Grant did not just drop out they couldn't get him he was busy making another picture. I suppose this blurb is to detract from Humphrey Bogart being second choice.Along with the whole cast I lament Cary Grant not playing Linus Larrabee it was an enchanting picture but with Cary Grant playing that part opposite Audrey Hepburn it would have moved up into the class of great romantic movie classics.Unforgettable, because they both had equal mega charisma, unsurpassed.Charade was too little too late Audrey always wanted to do a picture with Cary Grant, but the right time with the right story and the right director et al had passed.MMMnnnn.P.S.Humphrey Bogart was quite unpleasant towards her while making he movie he had heard of and resented her preference for Cary Grant.

@lorrainewands Well, it's all academic, since Bogart was cast and Grant wasn't. But I still see Cary as the Linus that got away and believe that his older and more distinguished good looks would have made Audrey's growing confusion and dilemma more interesting, not less. Bogart is terrific, but not in this role.

I wish Cary Grant played Linus. He and Audrey had good chemistry.
What a pity that Cary Grant didn't accept the role of older brother, Linus Larrabee. Humphrey Bogart is so far past his prime as to appear darn near embalmed. William Holden is great in the role of younger brother, David. Audrey, of course, never looked lovelier. The love affair that blossomed between Holden and Hepburn during filming is virtually palpable in the movie's love scenes.

I hate to agree but I think you’re right. Throughout her love life, her taste in men wasn’t the best, maybe this is because she didn’t have a father there to teach her how a man was supposed to treat a woman. Mel was very bitter and controlling, and I read reports where they had a very father-daughter like marriage where he ruled her with an iron fist. William? Well he was married and had kids already, and personally I think he should’ve known better than to chase after a young, single, and vulnerable girl knowing he already had a family, after all she does say that she was constantly on the lookout for affection and William probably picked up on that and courted her so she’d fall for him. As for that Dotti guy? He cheated on her, so he was another rat. The only man that treated her right was Robert Wolders, but they never married so who’s to say how that relationship would’ve ended if she had lived longer. I truly believe that the man she should’ve ended up with was Gregory Peck, the chemistry those two had off and on screen was something outwardly.
