On the 11th of March, 1845, after repeatedly cutting down the British flagstaff, Hone Heke attacked the town of Kororareka, killing about a dozen British soldiers and civilians (James Cowan says 15), forcing the rest of the population to flee to ships in the harbour, and sacking the town.
