Thanks for streaming one of our games again Heir! All us Imperators at SPQR hope you and your viewers had a great Christmas! Minlok’s dog maneuvers are feared by many. In this case it was like you said, Minlok was coming off a flawless victory and was teeming with confidence and overcommitted. Great game though! IMO Carthage has a great roster for their own Pre-Marian Triplex formations and cavalry tactics.

Just remember when you're playing Carthage, any time you bring a unit you could have brought more Numidian cavalry instead.

When I play this type of army setup I imagine I’m a mercenary Roman general hired by Carthage leading her armies with my accustomed Pre-Marian tactics ;)

Oh, the Tyrian purple, Carthage is back baby! Also, Heir while they are all similar, there are actually 3 groups of spears (with a few types in each basic to elite) in the game files. There are regular spears, hoplite spears, and Celtic spears. The interesting thing to me is that none of Carthage's units, even though called hoplites, use hoplite classed spears they just use default spears (of differing quality and type). I don't know why CA did this, but I hope it is because as far as history tells us Carthage's main citizen troops were not really hoplites. Being Phoenicians from the eastern Mediterranean, their main type of soldier was a spearman equipped in the eastern style. In Rome 2 terms eastern spearmen but with actual armor and probably not garbage like in the game. When Carthage started to expand those units now started to be partially equip in a more western Mediterranean style. Mostly influenced by the Greeks and in some periods even using the unique Aspis/hoplon shield that meant they probably had to fight similar to hoplites (the Aspis was great in a phalanx and rubbish for pretty much everything else). To my knowledge no ancient source Greek or Roman ever calls Hannibal's best troops (thought to be the continuation of the sacred band) hoplites. They most commonly call them spearmen (usually "African spearmen" or "veteran spearmen") probably because they weren't really hoplites just looked similar, though it could also be because by Cannae, they had looted so much Roman equipment they were basically Triarii but with different spears. Anyways this is too long, it would be cool if Carthage has different spears from other hoplites because of that historical nugget but I don't actually know why CA did it.

It was a lot of swords to face for sure. Elephants can't be underestimated though. If they don't get hit with Javelins they will utterly decimate infantry.

I love playing Carthage with a Pre-Marian Triplex Axis theme they have a perfect roster for it IMO. Screen with Celtic Warriors, Supplement with Libyan/Samnite, and rear guard/reserve with Sacred Band or Noble Fighters if you’re feeling bold.

Never understood why they did not give sacred band 30 AP. I wish Carthage had a 30 AP spear unit at the cost of 800-900 denarii, would make their versatile swords units choice much more relevant

Interesting build from Carthage, but awful play from the Arverni. Shouldn't attack infantry with levy freemen, just keep them in reserve to keep cavalry out of your back. They can protect the Heavy Horse and neutralize the threat from the Numidian cavalry. On top of that, Arverni commited their Oathsworn while the Celtic Warriors were still fighting, so the Oathsworn didn't have a clean charge. With a clean charge, the Oathsworn would have cleaned up the infantry from Carthage while the levy freemen kept off the cavalry and the elephants.

That’s actually a myth. Once you put a unit in shield wall they get enveloped by a unit of the same size. Shield wall is only good when you outnumber the unit and cannot be enveloped.

Please switch back to Warhammer, these recent Rome 2 battles have been really crappy like this one. Any army in Rome 2 w/o any range isn't likely unless it was set up or an unexperienced player which is highly unlikely since it's been out forever.
