I have heard comparisons to perfume, marble statues, piles of dog poo, the act of murder, special niche kinks, and the list goes on. That was really cruel. I struggle between feeling badly for gay men in the past for not being able to be out, and being really pissed off at the ones who tricked women into marrying them, wasting their time and blocking them from finding something true. They could have just been old spinsters like the lesbian aunties who lived together. At least as men, they had resources and didn't _need_ to get married.

I understand you, but I can also see where they were coming from. Being a man doesn't necessarily mean that they wouldn't have been forced into marriage. The social benefits and security from marriage was highly desired back then, and a lot of couples didn't ever love each other romantically and only saw each other as an agreement (I mean, just look at the Beth Ann plot). I can Karl's side of this easily. BUT, in Simone's case specifically, it was quite cruel considering this was her third marriage (and she broke off the other two because she didn't feel loved).

Shame they stopped the series in its infancy. It was worthy of further exploration and kept a fresh feel between the two seasons. While we'd love to hear more about the 1st season characters, we were swiftly drawn in and enraptured by the 2nd. It could have been a long runner, without a doubt.
